Came for the Back East Feast lobster boil dinner. Raw bar & champagne upon entry. Dinner was lobster bisque, blue cheese slaw, whole lobster, classic, mussels, king crab, red skin, corn on the cob & strawberry shortcake. House beer & wine, tip & tax included in ticket price of $99 with 10% of each ticket going to the charity to help the communities homeless. They have music playing while we dined under the tents. Gorgeous evening for the event. Waitstaff was outstanding as usual. This is their 4th year doing this event. My only 2 recommendations would be is to serve salted drawn butter (several others noted as well) and to not cook lobster with rubber bands on the claws. We requested salt shakers for the butter but due to the moisture the tables attempting to use them had difficulty. Other than those two minor fixable things it was a perfect night with the great food The Whitney is known for!

If youre in Detroit for even one day, GO TO THE WHITNEY. A friend and I flew in at 10am and our departure flight was at 4pm. We made time for the afternoon tea and it was worth it! First, the Victorian mansion is incredible. From the exterior design to the doorknobs, this place is beautiful. The staff are incredible. They knew we only had one hour to spend at tea before going back to the airport and they made sure we received our drinks and canapés right away. Every detail is spot on and special. Such as the welcome mimosa, learning details about the mansion, the food, the tablecloths, the teacups. I wish there was a similar experience in the city I live in.

Disappointing Fine Dining - tried to call multiple times to adjust guest count and let them know wed be late due to accident on I-94, but nobody answers the phone. $10 for valet. Host was snippy when we asked for the table away from the door because the piano was a touch loud. Servers are NOT wearing masks, so wondering if well get breakthrough COVID. Courses were rushed, apparently because the kitchen was going to get busy with a wedding party on first floor. Lobster bisque and Beef Wellington sub-part. Would not recommend.

This place isn’t for African American people. We had several issues with the employees. They made smart comments because some people arrived late. And it was a Caucasian group in the room with us and the manager walked up to them and asked them if they were ok. If not he could move them. Slammed the door in two of our guest face because they asked for a refund for their food. Chicken was bland and looked half cooked. The steak tasted just like a banquet TV dinner.

This is a great place to come tour and look around. The house is beautiful and it is apparent that it has been well-maintained through the years. However, that is as good as the experience gets. The food is way, way overpriced for the value you that you receive. The food tasted like it was made in large batches and served wedding reception-banquet style rather than being fresh and made to order, which anyone would certainly expect at this price point. We were sorely disappointed and will not be back for the food. For the money spent, we could have had a much better meal at another fine dining establishment in the Detroit area. If you want to see the mansion, I recommend paying for a tour and perhaps having a drink at the upstairs bar, but I would not purchase the food here again.

Food had great taste and presentation. The dessert wasnt the best though. It looks like depending on the room or location in the house that you are seated its a different vibe completely. Valet was terrible tonight. Only two guys were trying their best to get 20 cars after someones gathering ended and it caused a big traffic Jam. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny.

My boyfriend and I had known about the Whitney being a famed historic Detroit restaurant and were excited to finally experience it. We got dressed up and were prepared for an exquisite experience only to be let down almost from the moment upon arrival. A place like this seems like it should hold its grace, time period, and environment in its wait staff and the way they present themselves. We had to ask for napkins and silverware, and when our soup was brought out we had to ask for spoons to be able to eat it. The main course swordfish was raw in the middle, the bread was also raw and doughy in the center. Our bottle of wine wasnt brought out until half way through our main course. We sat outside in the garden and realized it had been overrun with weeds and not tended to at all this season. (Its August) the place had half the charm that we expected and we were incredibly disappointed. We waited 25 minutes for our bill and our food to be packaged. When asked how our experience was we were honest and they comped us a $25 gift card.

In short: 5 star venue, 2 star service and 1 star food. Here is a long complaint letter to the Whitney: I have been in love with this place since 2017. They take reservations for the first two floors and you can sit and enjoy your dinner. You also can come in and sit at the Ghost bar whenever with no reservations required. They used to have a wonderful snacks menu for the ghost bar and a relatively long cocktail list for upstairs. I used to go after work (also they had happy hour up there) and chill, eat and drink delicious food+drinks. However, their ghost bar snacks menu has downsized to only include bite size snacks sold at extra hgh prices. We literally got two standard shrimp, a decorated cucumber and a bite-size bruschetta for $15. See pics. The food is just mediocre, nothing special anymore. Shrimp, steaks etc. Just normal usual American food, no chef touches or anything special. The new drinks menu is very small. It is limited to 5 cocktails and wine and beer. Service is OK, or our waiter told us to see if we can receive the birthday special upstairs and never reported anything back. If you dont have special requests, you get what you want in terms of food + drinks. The venue is amazing. And i suggest you take a tour of the place starting at the second staircase that is labeled tours start here. Overall, go get drinks here and do the house tour, but really dont overpay for food please.

Im so disappointed with the experience my daughter and I had. We made a plan to see the entertainment on their patio and wanted to have dinner. Online the Patio Menu states that a full menu is available on request. When we arrived at the hostess stand we told them our intentions. One of the managers said we could not have dinner on the patio because the dinner menu isnt offered. We then said it states on the menu that its offered. He then said he would allow us to order from the dinner menu. He then proceeded to tell us two locations to sit outside. Either on the deck or on the patio. We chose the patio because we wanted to stay for the entertainment. He then asked the server to ask us to move to the back patio. We told him no we didnt want to because we were there for the entertainment. Our service was good but very slow because there were quite a lot of people on the patio. We understood. Martin and Jordan did a wonderful job. They had the entire outdoor area. The manager Darren stood by idly and watched as the two servers worked frantically. He even yelled and bickered at them quite a few times. Darren the manager even told the server not to serve water after the server gave one of the guests a cup of water (the guest did order drinks as well). My daughter and I went into the Whitney with a friend where he wanted his picture taken on the steps. I took about 4 pictures of him when Darren the manager interrupted us and told us to stop because we were interfering with the paying dinner guests. I have been to the Whitney several times and have seen many people taking pictures on the steps and in other locations of the restaurant. Guests were not disturbed. We did not block any guest on the stairway. This manager (Darren) is very rude and doesnt know how to treat guests or his employees. I was a paying guest. I spent $300 that evening and am so sorry I made a choice to dine there.

This was my familys first time dining at The Whitney.. Such an amazing place! The service, the food and the atmosphere are all top notch. Every course was a delight. The lobster bisque and the parmesan bread was delicious. The beef wellington was wonderful. Others at our table got the salmon which was also given high praise. My husband got the special...rabbit loin. He said it was a bit chewy, but none of us has ever had rabbit before, so that may be typical. Dessert was good.i had raspberry sorbet with raspberry puree. Others had the pastry chefs whim which was key lime whip in a white chocolate cup and a bit of chocolate cheesecake. Andrea our server did a wonderful job. We were celebrating three birthdays so those of us getting older also got a chocolate mousse. It was very rich and creamy. I had to share it because I was STUFFED. I would highly recommend for celebrating a special occasion. My daughter, daughter in law and I will be back for high tea in the future.

Came for the Sunday Afternoon Tea and might have stumbled on the cheapest way to enjoy the top notch service, food, and setting even at $49 a person. Starting off with champagne or a mimosa. Than, moving through courses of scones with marmalade and Chantilly cream, huge strawberries and double cream, tea sandwiches and hot canapes, and desserts that are at the whim of the chef. You are not rush and can even get pop if you dont drink tea or an adult drinks ( that costs extra). Will come back with friends if I can.

My husband and I have been going to the Whitney now for a while. We have had many date nights there, we had our wedding there, and we will celebrate every anniversary there. Starting with the rich history of the building, the ambiance and beauty of this place is truly like no other. The food and drinks are a bit pricy, however the portions are generous and the quality is definitely worth it (We are die hards for the Beef Wellington every time). Lastly, yet most important to us is how welcoming and professional the entire staff is. Each time we go we enjoy seeing new faces to the Whitney team and love seeing the ones that we recognize from even our wedding. Our most recent visit this weekend, the new manager Jeffrey, our server Victoria and the bartender up at the Ghost Bar, Alfred were all new faces to us. They are made our night very special and memorable, from the extraordinary service, to the small talk, to the personalized menus, to the special anniversary gifts. We appreciate and love the Whitney and would recommend it to anyone as fine dining spot in Detroit.

Unfortunately my reviews are based on the overall experience of a place. From entry to exit.Building, cool old place.Staff? 3 stars. Not as professional and refined as the menu prices would expect. Good thing gratuity was automatic for them. We normally tip 20% plus. These folks were 12 to 15% level.Food? 5 stars. Was very good. I struggled to accept the pricing because Im cheap and unrefined, but they delivered and the value for the cost was there. Best carrot cake ever.Service? 4 stars. Started very slow. Extremely long wait to even be asked about beverages. The meal service became far better. Why the 3 stars? Seating? - 1 star. The most God awful chairs Ive ever had to sit in. Ive had more comfortable seating in a dive coney place in the bad part of town. They have these chairs that are supposed to give the appearance of being as old as the building. Well as bad as they are youd think so. Until you flip one over and its made in China. Even the hostess warned the chairs are broken down. When you are seated for 2 hrs for a 4 course meal you should not have to keep adjusting and standing to relieve the misery. I woke up Saturday feeling like I sat on a bleacher seat for 12 hrs. Chairs, or refurbishment is not expensive in relation to the food prices.I cant hardly recommend to anyone to patronize the Whitney just for that reason until you can sit and not be in pain.

The building this restaurant is housed in is beautiful and historical in a city filled with skyscrapers and modern technology. I feel this restaurant is more about the history behind the home and the owner of the home. The food was overly priced and not the best I’ve ever had for a close to $200 tab (not including tip). Their signature beef Wellington sits in a soggy plate of vegetables.I think it’s a once and a blue moon type of place for me. We were given a tour which was an unexpected surprise, but it became clear that the home is in need of massive repairs. I work in Architecture so certain items stood out to me…water damage in the ceiling, peeling wallpaper and the chairs need to be re upholstered. As I sat throughout my dinner I could feel the metal coils on my backside. The home is decorated in turn of the century Victorian, but this is why people return, the ghost stories, the story of the lumber magnate who builds and decorates his home custom to his desire who is tied to royalty. Crowd seemed older celebrating anniversaries and birthdays.

But for my second time in a row, I ordered the Beef Wellington. The pastry was raw on the bottom. They didnt even make a mushroom duxelle. It was cooked button mushrooms sliced thin and put on top of the Wellington. Also, to top it off, they sent me raw vegetables on my plate and a burnt dare I say a cremated carrot. It was so black and charred it was inedible. The seafood my girlfriend got on the bed of orzo rice was amazing! I also ordered her a vanilla butter-poached lobster tail, which was also amazing. All in all just an average experience 2 times in a row going there. I truly believe the kitchen needs help on their beef Wellington. Amazing place with incredible atmosphere. The staff always greets you very kindly and food is really good. The only downside I see is the menu is a bit reduced but everything is really tasty.

Close. But still not the top. The Whitney has the ambience, the history, the atmosphere and the ghosts. But something about the way the restaurant is run puzzles me. It is not a 5 star restaurant, but it is close. I think it is the attention to detail that is lacking. No real complaints about either the food or the service, but I have had better and it is both hard to describe and disappointing.

We had dinner in the Woodward room. Very quiet quant room on the third floor. The prime rib special was well worth the money. The bread was the best I have ever had. I recommend the tour after the dinner. Jim our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the home. This restaurant is more of an experience than just good food.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary with the wonderful staff at The Whitney. The food was superb, setting romantic and the staff were wonderful. The Beef Wellington was incredible. Thank you for a memorable evening.

The Whitney never disappoints!!! Went for Sweetest Day. I had the 16 oz Tomahawk Pork Chop with wonderful vegetables. Finished off our meal with the Ugli Cake. Our waitress was so nice....great evening.

Date night, special occasion or throwing a wedding. This is a beautiful place inside out. It has a valet service for $10. Reservation is must especially during holidays and weekends, you can even specify the table you would like to have reserved (if you have not been here - ask for one near to window facing Woodward Ave for late evenings)Things about this place that really stands out are the history, hospitality and amazing food. You will get a tour of this place every 30 minutes. Ghost bar on third floor is famous for being haunted and that’s how it got the name I guess.

We came to the Whitney to have a drink and dinner for our anniversary. The night turned into a surprise, private engagement from my fiancé! Couldn’t have had a better night 😍

I was super excited to go here as I had never been before and the Whitney is iconic in the Detroit area. Overall, I cannot say for sure if I would return. The appetizers were tasty as was the lobster bisque. My steak was slightly charred on the top but still good. I requested my steak medium and it was closer to a medium well. The outer parts of the steak were well done as no pink could be seen. The cut of the steaks was excellent. My husbands lobster tail had a weird mushy consistency so we had to send it back but the potatoes and asparagus were delicious. The building itself is absolutely beautiful so that was a major plus. Our server was very friendly but not attentive. My husband waited over 20 minutes to get his drink refilled. I often had to flag her down when we needed something as she did not regularly return to check in on us. The Whitney is expensive so I expected more from the preparation of the food and the service. The overall experience did not blow me away. It was good and we definitely enjoyed our time but it wasnt one of our most memorable experiences.
