People who are on parole/probation (mainly federal) often are housed here if they are homeless. Find permanent homes, get to leave; sounds simple.... Its not. Often extremely hard for this population to find housing, mainly due to apartment applications. That is society judging on what a person has done, or MIGHT do, not what they are doing.
For those who dont know Independence house is a halfway house on south Federal where people that were incarcerated are supposed to be building a new life in society. It is essentially a very rundown tenement / slum type building. (picture a crackhouse) They jam 5 men or women into a single one bedroom 600 square foot apartment that is utterly disgusting. I am positive the living conditions violate many safety and compliance codes. From rusted out crumbling safety rails, broken stairs, leaking air conditioners, moldy carpets, jerry rigged fire suppression. The bathrooms are peeling apart and showers, sinks and toilets are filthy and I am certain there is black mold throughout. Beyond that, there is no mission or desire to assist anyone. Instead of trying to actually help people the Independence House South Federal Denver does everything to keep its residents down. There is no clear directive or mission adhered to and operationally the place is a total cluster. The left-hand never knows what the right hand is doing as there is no clear communication. The employees at the security desk, save a few, are rude and have a very loose grasp on what they should be doing day-to-day. There is very little respect given to any of the residents. The manager of the office operates with a complete power trip mentality, she has utter contempt for the people living there, it is very clear that she has zero leadership capabilities . The case managers, when they are available which is rare, do nothing to manage they are all jaded and judgemental and are mostly incompetent. They do the bare minimum and hardly understand the parameters of there own responsibilities.Rebecca G: Speaking with her is like dealing with an obstinate sixth grader. Andrea G: is jaded and automatically assumes that you are a liar and trying to game the system. Chris is the only case manager that actually cares and moves through his responsibilities correctly and can actually use a computer. The only other shred of hope for help is in Adrian and sometimes Kat, they will at least listen to you and treat each circumstance with a level of fairness. Do not look for any real help from Independence House. They garner 20% of your income, and demand you pay it. Bear in mind this 20% is of your PRETAX GROSS income, which if you do the math is about .38 cents of every dollar. The place is so disgusting and run down and yet they garner your wages for rent Not to mention they recieve Govt. and state subsidies as a prison selected rehab and a business contracted to the BOP. The simple math is: basic employment @ $15 hour equals $480 garnered per month, per person, multiply that by 5 men or women per tiny room thats $2400 a month; per room, for basically mold ridden crack house. I have never counted the total rooms but I estimate 25 rooms. SO thats 60K a month in garnered wages. Now bear in mind this place is supposed to try and help you get back up on your finacial feet and reintegrate you into the world. Independence House is supposed to HELP men and women that have been incarcerated. Unfortunately if youre forced to go to Independence House South Federal Denver youre in for a very frustrating uncomfortable and organizationally ridiculous living situation that has no clear-cut mission statement or directive and does the bare minimum to try and reintegrate incarcerated individuals into society. This place is an embarrassment of a business run by vacuous dolts and does nothng but propagate the already high recidivism rate in our prison system and is in DIRE NEED of a full audit and a complete overhaul.
It says homeless service and thats not the case......
They are NOT there to help you. If you arent CD sling or able to fit the service construction job low skilled physical labor sector, it will be very hard. If you are old or disabled w/o support they do nothing to help you. They are there to enforce rules that go against getting life together, further stigmatize felon label and marginalize. Good luck if you have no outside support in Denver, or if you are ( were) a professional. A few kinder staff members dont hide. Some case mgrs act as if just doing what they are supposed to is a privilege. Its better than prison, difficult for someone who is not a drug addict, w/o local support and limited in working situations.
This place is the closest thing to hell. 🤯🤮🙃
Hot Water and professional service must cost extra and not to be expected.
When you first walk in this place its a dirty as hell to me. but the women in the office are just as mean and rude as can be.. they act like youre bothering them when you ask them questions. it was a bad experience here when I went to visit someone I will never visit anyone there again so I dont nobody never gets in trouble.. because that place really sucks Ive never seen so much rudeness in my life
Very thankful and appreciative Independence 🏠 exists. TyLord.
Garbage staff. I went there to offer applications for higher at my company. came back the next day and they lost even the ones that were filled out. They couldnt have cared less about anything.
Designed to keep you in the system, the staff steal and are dishonest. These half way houses need to burn to the ground and stop waisting our tax dollars.
I live there right now and the people that work there are so professional.
Was bigger than it appeared and was told it was the first halfway to actually try n help one e the transition
Because theyve done nothingbut help me in my reintegration back intosociety.
Awesome Place helps everyone
