I started training at Burkes Martial Arts a few years ago. I was blown away by the introductory lesson and quickly joined as a member. This place teaches extremely practical self-defense. The instructors are skilled and professional. There is a sense of community among the practitioners. There is a seriousness about the training, but its also incredibly fun. The school is packed with students who are amazing to work with. I could go on... The only reason I had to leave was because of my work schedule. Id still be practicing today if I had the time. When I called up to explain my new work situation and cancel my contract, the staff was immediately understanding. The conversation only lasted a few minutes and the cancellation was taken care of. I highly recommend this place.
Ive been going off and on for a few years and enjoy the atmosphere and the personable honest staff. Unfortunately due to a change in employment my schedule no longer worked with the class schedule and I had to cancel my membership. The process was simple and was just a short conversation. If I have the opportunity I would likely come back and continue classes
The staff here sets the bar high with customer service and holds themselves to a high standard when it comes to making sure they take care of everyone on and off the mat. Due to unfortunate circumstances I had to cancel my membership and I was nervous that it would be a long drawn out hassle. But after speaking to them they were very understanding and minutes into our conversation everything was settled. Great communication and easy processing. Hope To get back into this gym ASAP.
Blown away by how much is learned in such a short amount of time. The teachers are probably the coolest Ive had the pleasure of working with. These classes are great for beginners if youre looking to get a start in the world of martial arts. I highly suggest visiting the space and/or giving them a call.
Very friendly and clean environment! The people that work here are very supportive of any physical goals you might have. Whether it be losing weight or learning Muay Thai. Also, when I was unable to attend classes canceling the membership was nice and easy, communication was on point 👍👍
Very professional. Would highly recommend. Easily got out of my contract when I told them work required me to travel more. Also special S/o to Mike cool dude!
I took the Muay Thai classes and I would recommend it because of the techniques taught, conditioning, awesome atmosphere, and music during class. The staff is very knowledgable and has a great teaching style.Unfortunately due to personal reasons I had to cancel my membership but it was a quick, simple process that was explained verbally and written into my membership contract when I signed up.
Me. Burke runs a great program. Its straight forward, systematic, and fun.At the end of the class, Im always spent! He is a professional and knows what you are capable of and how far he can push you. He is able to focus on all of his students with equal attention. His technique & style is top-notch, he learned from masters of the Art, he has traveled to Thailand to expand his knowledge and style...what more could you want from an instructor. He takes muay Thai martial arts from Thailand and presents it here in the states in a way we can all benefit from.Love the class & enviroemnt, the most humble welcoming people!
Trainers are legit, BUT, I left years ago. I still get emails from them. I just recently got one about submitting a verbal testimony about gun laws and how I need to protect our rights from being taken away. Look, you can be a proponent of whatever rights you want, idk why youre forcing these emails on your students, politics should not be part of the master/student relationship.
Great place & great training but its out of my price range Im just going to stick to the gym for now
I wanna know if kids can go here too?
Profit driven. At the end of my contract they proceeded to continue to bill me for numerous months, during which I never attended their classes. When I called to cancel, I was warned I might be charged a fee for canceling my contract, which I was later informed I wouldnt be, which was supposed to make me feel good about being charged for a few extra months of class but not another additional fee. Great! There was a three class tryout program that sounded like a reasonable deal. The real point of this is to get you to sign a contract as soon as possible. During this period the staff are very attentive - first impressions matter. I felt pressured into signing up after just one class, but at the time the conditions of the gym were decent. However, over time the number of students more than doubled and the classes became more and more crowded. The place started to reek of feet after work and sweat - appetizing! Thats when I stopped going. To those who will find these terms acceptable, there is a small community that sometimes has events and gatherings. Have fun!
Jake is sleazy, manipulative, and blatantly disrespectful. Many members have recently left because of his treatment towards them, he will do his best to take advantage of you and get you tied up. I do not recommend doing business with this individual.
Ive been at Burkes for 9 months. It has been one of the best, most self improving experiences I have had. The instructors are great, the students are fantastic, and the atmosphere is diverse and accepting of everyone. The classes are intense, I lost 30 lbs in 4 months going twice a week! Every single person in the school is respectful of others and willing to listen as well as teach. Burkes is a great place to learn how to push your own limits in a safe environment. The school is always clean and well equipped.
They keep taking money out of your account, EVEN after you cancel. Was told to email them to request to cancel. So I sent them an email cancelling membership back in late October, never emailed me back after that. I look today in my bank account they withdrew 5 months worth of membership fees within the past week. I did not authorize these transactions. I notified the fraud department. Hopefully people will reconsider before joining this place.
A greats decision if you want to change your life; not only physically but mentally to!!💪👊
Absolutely burned on Burkes Martial Arts. Upon learning, like many others, that my financial future as I currently know it may be headed in a very negative direction, it became necessary to make quick changes to manage this situation taking the world by storm as effectively as possible. One of these changes includes doing away with extras, luxuries, or non-essentials which includes a membership at a martial arts gym. While learning I may be suddenly found without a job and facing a rapidly changing lifestyle, I also learned that the things taking place in my life as well in the world mean nothing compared to the dollar that stands to be made by this business. I was told by Michael that since I didnt attempt to cancel at least 30 days in advance, I would still be billed. Ignoring the fact that 30 days ago, life was proceeding as normal here and people were not facing unemployment and troubles as we are more recently. To top that off, I was reminded of a 199 cancellation fee for early membership termination. For two people, that is up to ~600 just to not go during this time of hardship. So in a time where things have become so serious that mortgage and utility payments are being deferred up to six months and these people cant even go to work because of the same issues everyone is facing, they show no intention of accomodating anyone or letting up on what seems like a quest set out on purely for profit. I should have minded the red flag of books left lying around like The Art Of Selling Memberships (a literary work rooted in capitalism and teaches how you too can sell millions in memberships) and but I thought they were just for training models. I was wrong. The plan was to go back once all this calmed down and financial stability was regained. No longer is this the plan. These practices are not honorable or respectable at all and I can not advise someone associate those words with Burkes Martial Arts. The only word I can think of now is greed. Hopefully for others they will revise their practices going forward, especially in times of crisis, in an effort to show you that they care about their members as much as the money.
Don’t waste your money on this place!
Awesome place. Awesome people. I only started a month ago, but I am so happy to be part of it. Mr. Burke and coach Ian are absolutely amazing, they have a lot of patient to teach you and actually wanna make sure you are doing it right. I was so shy at the beginning because everyone looks so good and professional, but then I noticed how everyone was so welcomed and how Muay Thai is not something only about fight but about focus as well. Best place to challenge yourself and change your lifestyle (at least is changing mine). Out of my comfort zone, making me improve everyday a little bit, enjoying every class annnnnd losing some weight lol.Loved it! Thanks for bringing me back to a happy fitness life!
Just had my first Kickboxing class last week and it was amazing. Since it was my first class i had a hard time keeping up but i had a instructor work one on one during the whole class to teach me the basics and to help me get through it. The Staff and facility are great, nice and clean and welcoming. Highly Recommend!!
Extremely unprofessional and predatory. They will trap you into a situation where they are taking money from your account after attempting to cancel with them. Responded unprofessionally after attempting to resolve this problem as a disgruntled customer who was surprised to see charges after taking steps I was directed to take by the company to cancel. Avoid this company for your peace of mind and wallet. I stand by my review and have proof of all correspondences which includes vitriol, inappropriate name calling and personal attacks sent towards to me by this owner. This public response is the most professional response received from them and is a facade to invalidate this review. Again, avoid this company, no costumer deserves to be treated the way Ive been. Please note, I was never abusive towards anyone at Burkes. I did express my genuine disappointment in the way that the my attempt to cancel was handled. I believe leaving me to incur charges and later requesting after I had been charged that I needed further proof is unprofessional and predatory. Most disturbing are these messages I received from the owner shown in the attached picture.
Had a great experience! First off I have never taken a kick boxing/ martial arts class in my life. A friend of mine from work brought me along as her buddy during their buddy week promotion. The class itself was great, we went from stretching to a great ab circuit into some drills. It seemed to be a class that catered to different knowledge / physical fitness levels which was beneficial for someone like me who didnt know a thing. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful, they take time to show you the moves and really pay attention to your form. Great experience overall.
Ive attended classes here for four months. In that amount of time, I have not been bored in one class! The workouts also change so you never know what to expect. The only thing you can expect is that the workout wont be easy, but the trainers will inspire you. If you are struggling, they will give you individual attention. Cant do a certain exercise? They can show you one that you can do. They will also correct your technique if needed, which will reduce the chances of you injuring yourself. The gym is clean, update, and welcoming.
Burkes Martial Arts is my first Martial Arts School. walking in for the first time, I was thinking it would be my third gym. My first gym was great, good people which I learned a lot from. Unfortunately due to complications the gym was closed. So when I sat down to sign up, I was asked all the usual questions, then was asked What goals would you like to achieve? Was handed a list. Thinking to myself, didnt see that coming. Reading it over, I realized this wasnt a gym, this a school. Its been a little over a year now. My Self Discipline, Self Confidences, Physical Fitness, Self Defense has greatly improved and will continue to do so. I am very proud to be a student at Burkes Martial Arts.
Classes are always awesome, staff are super supportive, and you will burn up during workouts!!
I loved my kickboxing instructors and attended classes regularly for months; however, Jake has been extremely rude and unprofessional during the process of cancelling my contract with AtomicKickboxing.com. After following all necessary steps written in the contract for proper cancellation due to medical reasons/injury I have continued to be charged each month since. This has been going on for 3.5 months thus far. Charges keep coming and Ive sent my documents multiple times via mail AND email to both the owner, Jake, and the financing company to prove Ive fulfilled the contract. I was met with a rude phone call and voicemail from the owner in the beginning and then he began ignoring all communications. The financing company manager was very helpful and did everything he could to help. Definitely try kickboxing! Dont do it with Burkes Martial Arts / AtomicKickboxing.com!PS: I sent a physical therapists note AND a note from my Primary Care Physician! The note from my PCP was sent 3 times through email and mail following the physical therapists note. I drove to my doctor twice to pickup different notes to satisfy the doctors note requirement. Dont fall for the lies of this place.
I am a 70 year old 2 time breast cancer survivor who began kickboxing at Burkes Martial Arts a year ago. I am overweight and there are some things I cant do such as Burbees. My instructors always have compatible exercises that I CAN do. They work with me and are so encouraging!!! I feel 100 times better than I did a year ago and I feel I am extending my life by working out at Burkes. My fellow classmates, all MUCH younger, are always pleasant and do not treat me like an old lady I would highly recommend this place. Youll be happy you did.
I have been training in the martial arts of over 15 years in different styles. I had never gotten into Muay Thai before until I started at Burke’s 3 months ago. I now am finding it to be one of my fav arts, the knowledge that I gotten in such a short time has blown my mind. The owner and Chief Instructor Mr. Burke trainers directly out of Thailand and has been for over 11 years, you can’t get more authentic than that. Plus it’s one hell of a work out !💦👊🏽🙃Not to mention the group of students that train there are really awesome and supportive. Very welcoming and so willing to help you out . It’s def one of cleanest gyms I have been to in a long time as well. Thanks so much for the awesome classes and the incredible knowledge thus far, I am looking forward to training and learning more. 💪🏽👊🏽🤙🏽
Horrible to do business with. STAY AWAY. Jake expects service for free. He first ask to have things fixed but then complained about price. Funny how he blames us for a poor product he bought elsewhere. We tried to help with free visits but I guess free isnt enough. Other reviews on here with one star is on point. He seems to think he is the only customer in the world. Acting like a child by leaving bad reviews says alot about his character. On this note let him be angry at the world cause nothing makes him happy. Keep defending your poor reviews. Great job lol
Ive been taking the kickboxing classes here for a couple years now. I like that the classes are structured so that there is some consistency, but the actual workout is always changing and very challenging. And its not just about punching and kicking the bag here - the instructors really take the time to help you with correct technique, setting and hitting goals, continuous improvement, learning new things, and having fun with it. I love that theyll thrown in a combination because its a students favorite, and that theyll tailor the class for the group. Its the little things like that (and seeing the results!) that make it so enjoyable to keep coming back.I joined the Vee Arnis Jitsu (self-defense) class about a year ago. To be honest, it was extremely uncomfortable for me at first because we are all very much in each others personal space. But it is important to me to be able to learn realistic techniques for defending myself, and thats what happens here. There is emphasis on learning and practicing correct technique to build muscle memory, but also on learning and internalizing the concepts so that they can be applied in real-life situations. I deeply appreciate the patience with which the techniques are taught, that Ive never felt unsafe in the class, and that I have a lot of fun learning with this group. I also look forward to hearing what Mr. Burke says at the end of class- its always something I need to hear and I enjoy feeling encouraged to grow mentally and spiritually.Overall, Id say kickboxing is a killer physical work-out, and VAJ is a mental and physical challenge. The school itself is very clean and the instructors are the best. Its a friendly environment and youll definitely get the results of the work you put in. One of my favorite things, though, is that they always have a way to give back to the community going, whether its a coat drive or a check-in that provides community services. I leave feeling better and a little more prepared to take on the world.
Horrible they dont teach you anything here if you guys want to learn something usefull go to another place
I started training Vee Arnis Jitsu here with the owner when the place first opened almost ten years ago. It’s been awesome watching it grow into one of the top fighting schools in the northeast. Professionally run with deeply skilled practitioners and teachers. I had been training in martial arts for 15 years and already had a black belt before I started training with Sensei Burke. I got more confidence in my ability to defend myself in one year with him than I’d gained in over a decade of training before that. The kickboxing workouts were some of the most brutal cardio blasts I’ve ever experienced before. Nearly puked a few times! Felt superhuman after though. 💪🏼👍🏼Highly recommended!!
I have been involved in martial arts for almost 15 years. In that time, I have belonged to a few different schools. I have been going to Burke’s for the past 5 years. I love this school. Mr Burke is an awesome instructor who puts in a tremendous amount of time to make sure his students succeed in reaching their goals. Make no mistake, this school is definitely not a “McDojo belt factory “. If you advance in rank, it is because you’ve earned it.Mr Burke travels to Thailand every year to continue learning and comes back to share his knowledge with his Muay Thai students. His Krav Maga classes are very intense. I have learned so much in this class. It is a true self defense program and the way he is able to break down the techniques, it makes it easier learn and retain. It is such a confidence booster! The school is super clean and the staff is polite. If you are looking for a great place to get in shape, give this school a try!!!
Mr Burkes teaching style may not be everyones cup of tea so to speak, but in the very short time I have been there he runs a tough Muay Thai class that not only focuses on physical condition but also technique. I will update after 6 months to tell you how its going.
The Instructors are very knowledgeable. The Krav Maga class is 149 a month. 0 Down if you sign up after your first Groupon class, 48 if you sign up before your fifth Groupon class ( 10 classes for 50). 200 dollar fee to buy yourself out of their contract. It’s a very nice ambiance. But unfortunately too expensive.
As a Muay Thai practitioner and figher the best decision I ever made to further my career was training at Burkes Martial Arts. Since training at Burkes Martial Arts I have only lost one fight that was by a close split decision. Since starting here Ive competed in the largest Muay Thai promotion in America. Mind you this is all within one years time! Someone with Mr. Burkes Knowledge is rare to come by, not only his knowledge but his patience and teaching skills are amazing. People with little to no experience learn quickly in a fun friendly environment. There is no ego here at Burkes Martial Arts and every student is friendly and eager to help the other learn and progress. Come find out why so many people choose to train here rather than any other place around.
Staff are welcoming and made me feel at ease from the very beginning! I was 50 lbs overweight when I started, and am shedding the weight steadily!
If this guy calls you to do work for him tell him youre out of business. He is an immature child who doesnt understand basic human decency or hes a sexist hater. Either way run, run away from this bully.
Burkes Martial Arts has the BEST Mauy Thai and Self-Defense classes in all of RI! I come from a martial arts background for over 9 years and have learned so much from Burkes that is actual and practical street self-defense. He has been training in this system for many, many years and is very knowledgeable about what goes on in the streets. Youre not learning some fantasy movie self-defense techniques, but what you will learn is how to save your life if ever in a bad situation. As for the Mauy Thai program, the owner has been going to Thailand for years and brings back what he learns to teach his students. He has had some famous Lumpinee Mauy Thai fighters from Thailand do seminars at his school. Having gone to Thailand to train myself, I can tell you that Burkes is the real deal for learning authentic Mauy Thai. The school is amazingly clean, new equipment, awesome trainers that actually care about their students; each and every one of them.
At first it was great, but then I got my first bill....$129 Dollars a month is a little steep for an at the time student who could really only go so many times a week. I could not even leave the contract because it would be a $200 cancellation fee. They also charge you for signing up ($70), and they charge you for the required uniform which is a Shirt, some shin guards and a mouth piece. They try to sweeten the deal by giving you gloves for free. If you didnt have any equipment ahead of time that will end up being about $80. And you need your own Muay Thai Shorts (that much is understandable). So before you even pay your first bill, youve already paid more than the actual bill itself. They say authentic Muay Thai. The technique is good, but authentic Muay Thai doesnt have a belt ( Prajioud) system to give to their students. Which, they have to PAY to take the test to get the belt... which I found odd, because no offense, but I had better technique than a lot of those people who had higher ranks than me. I could never test because you need to have a required amount of classes to qualify, But I have school and a part time job, so that was difficult. They are nice people, but they show HUGE favoritism to a select group of students. At the end of my experience, Ive learned to not sign contracts that have such heavy fees. But they seemed so nice at first. Gym is very clean, But not worth the money for the little attention you get compared to other students. People who previously worked there also said some not so nice things about the owner. If there is nothing in your area, take Burkes, otherwise, keep looking to save some money. They say you pay for quality, but not THAT much
Im a relatively new student at Burkes Martial Arts. I have been nothing but completely amazed with the positive and friendly environment as well as the instructors professionalism. I chose Burkes because i was in search of an authentic Muay Thai program with quality/proven instructors and i feel that i have gotten that plus much much more. I drive 75-80 minutes each way to attend classes, and there are at least 4 schools that offer Muay Thai in closer proximity but i make the decision to travel because Burkes Martial Arts is as good as it gets and really stays true to traditional Muay Thai. Not only am i learning a Martial Art that i continue to fall in love with more and more as i train, but i get a killer workout while doing so. I always leave feeling exhausted but extremely fulfilled. One of my favorite aspects of the class is right at the end of class, the days leading instructor will speak for just a few moments and shed some wisdom about Muay Thai, healthy living/fitness, or just life in general which sends me on my way fired up to improve myself in and out of the gym. I Honestly cannot speak highly enough of Mr. Burke and everyone i have encountered so far and look forward to training for a long time to come.
Burkes Martial Arts is the best training facility in RI. I have been training since a teenager and I can honestly say...this is the place to BE!! Mr. Burke and his team are so knowledgable, supportive, and encouraging to whatever your goals are. I train Muay Thai and kickboxing there. the environment is calm, clean, with the best equipment available. Kru Burkes knowledge and passion for Muay Thai is so motivating. He makes me feel like I can achieve goals that I was doubtful of. the vibe of Burkes is one of acceptance, learning, positive motivation, and family. the kickboxing program is a HIGH energy, non stop, fat melting, muscle building workout. Plus, the satisfaction I get from learning defense, is so empowering. so no matter what your goals are, Burkes Martial Arts is there to individualize a program for you!! So what are you waiting for??? Get yourself to Burkes Martial Arts!!!
I was treated poorly towards the end of my stay,
I have been to many Martial Arts gyms in Rhode Island and I would have to say Burkes is one of the best. Mr. burke and staff are truly dedicated in helping there students to reach there fitness goals. Their cardio kickboxing classes are well designed to whip you into shape, and the Muay Thai class that they offer is truly authentic; and in my opinion is probably the best in the state. they have a open mate day where you can come in and use the free weights and equipment or just practice. this i find kind of unique with burkes because i havent seen to many martial arts gym offer anything like that. The students and staff are very friendly and are always willing to help one another out.the gym is keep very clean and organized. The equipment is top quality and in good shape. I highly recommend checking this place out!
Great place, great instructors definitely recommend.
Great experience!
Youre men or women, youre looking for self defense technics, weight loss or working stress / rage relief ... go to Burkes Martial Arts®.The building does not look good. The car park at the back, along the railway line puts in the atmosphere of self defense. We push a warehouse door and a few floors higher you arrive at the MMA temple. Both rooms are clean with very well maintained equipment. I went for 10 sessions of Krav Maga following a Groupon® offer. The enthusiasm and professionalism of the coaches made me sign for a year. Who think Krav Maga and MMA think sports for young men. And ladies, groups have a perfect mix with sometimes even more women and not only young people. Depending on your physical condition, the coaches offer you variants of the exercises. Another bonus, Burke offers self defense classes only for women. If you want to feel good at defending yourself, losing weight for muscle, or just getting rid of the frustration of work, go to Burkes Martial Arts®.
Excellent
