The place is so amazing! We went there to celebrate our anniversary and really enjoyed it!Everything about this place is so good. The vibe, the food, the cocktails and their service. It’s so interesting that they change the menu every day, so you have the chance to have a different experience every time.
An absolutely fantastic experience! Our waiter, Alex, was attentive and extremely knowledgeable about everything he brought to our table. The food was beyond our expectations and served with beautiful presentation. The owner, Kamal, was incredibly gracious. Thank you Kamal and staff for helping to preserve a piece of Columbus history and for a wonderful evening! We will definitely return soon!
Had a pre-engagement dinner at The Refectory, and it was well worth the venture. Its hard to find a place with the atmosphere that matches the food. The dishes are fresh and authentic to French culinary; Andrew our waiter was extremely courteous as well, constantly ensuring we were taken care of (but not in an overbearing way) while providing excellent choices based on current needs. He even offered a complementary glass of wine since it did not fill to the allotted line. And we cant forget about the busser who constantly exchanged our napkins, as well as cleaned our area for the next dish perfectly. He was light-skinned, and wore thick, dark rimmed glasses. I feel bad for not asking his name. I would highly recommend this gentleman to serve at this location. His attention to detail was great.Thank you all for a great start to a new life for us. Its by far a top five dining experience. We will surely be back!
Everything about our experience was perfect. The attention to detail in the presentation of food and the hospitality of the owner and the staff were unmatched. Although the portions are smaller (they are intended that way), the flavor and richness of food makes up for it. Really enjoyed the lamb chop, the filet and the scallops. The dessert was exceptional as well! Will definitely be back!
Really enjoyed our meal here. The host was super nice and helpful. Our waiter was super helpful and friendly, and when we had more questions about the venue as a place for a larger party event, he was more than willing to help us with all the questions we had and gave us the owners contact information if we had more. The food was amazing! I had the Red snapper and it was really FANTASTIC! The desserts were amazing as well. They make a killer old fashioned on top of the other cocktails they offer. thanks guys! will be back!
Could not have asked for more from The Refectory. Fantastic food, service and atmosphere. Kamal Boulos, chef Richard Blondin and their staff have done a magnificent job preserving a Columbus landmark and helping to usher it into the future. If you live in Columbus or are just visiting, you owe it to yourself to stop by for a meal!
Great unique dining experience where the focus is on the food. The menu is created each day, so its always changing. Build your own tasting experience, or choose between one of their 2 preselected 5 course tasting menus. Everything is delicious and good sized portions. We went for our anniversary and left feeling 100% satisfied. Probably some of the best food and wine pairings Ive ever had!
Old school dining at its finest. Want to feel upper crust and your wallets fat. This is the absolute finest restaurant in Columbus. Sure other places have great food attentive wait staff but the Refectory is over the top. If youre not into being overly pampered or think a $50 plate is a rip off, enjoy your Hot chicken Takeover. This place is not for you.
One of the best fine dining experiences I’ve had in my life. The King’s Wife cocktail was outstanding and had a very unique texture. I had the lamb for my main course and really enjoyed the tenderness and full flavor profile of the dish. I’m very satisfied and would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious fine dining experience.
For an upscale restaurant you would think their menus would be accurate. But last night it was not. Our first course was some green tower verse the salmon dish we ordered. For paying over $620.00 for four people I expect better. The waitress took my payment and did not even say thank you for $120.00 tip. Just ran off to clean some tables. Hum. What was going on?
We had the most wonderful experience!!! Amazing customer care & service. Absolutely delicious food! Everyone was warm & kind. I have food allergies and they were so understanding & accommodating. Truly a lovely evening. We will definitely be back again! And the owner was incredibly kind & personable as well. This restaurant is a must visit!
Wonderful service, beautiful location, incredible food. Every moment of the experience at The Refectory is tasteful, classy, delicious! I cant say enough about this restaurant. The service here is unmatched, from the hosts to the waitstaff. Every bite of food melts in your mouth. The appetizers are creative and all ingredients play so well together. When we drove into the parking lot, we saw one of the chefs outside, picking herbs from the restaurants own garden! Absolutely amazing. Thank you!
Refectory hits all the top marks on a dining experience. The first thing youll pass on the way into the parking lot is the well maintained chefs garden - a great precursor to the level of food you are about to experience. A quaint path will lead you inside an elegant and intimate building built around 1850, refurbished but complete with original stained glass windows and original hand built rafters and hand laid brick. The host welcomes you with grace, and will explain the history of the restaurant in charming detail through his 40+ years serving the restaurant. Every dish is expertly crafted and thoughtfully prepared by the chef, whose 29 years at the Refectory will speak for itself through the intricate flavor profiles you will experience from his classic French training. The service is exemplary; purposeful and warm, friendly without coming off as forced. Overall, the Refectory is a truly magical and unique experience that should be on your bucket list.
This was both the best meal I have ever had in my 50+ years, and the most expensive. Well worth it for a special occasion. I highly recommend the Chefs 5-Course Tasting Menu and dont forget to add the wine pairing! We will most certainly be back.
Wife and I spent our 8th anniversary at Refectory. I would give this place10+ stars out of 5 if I could. Service was excellent. Food was delicious. Cost was very reasonable and probably a bit low for the quality of the food. Wine list was extensive with some hard to find items. Ill come back again!
Its a great restaurant. Ive only had better food a few times. If youve never eaten French cuisine Its worth a trip for the experience. Make sure to order a bread basket as the rustic mini loaf is wonderful and deserving of your attention. The big menu items take all the glory instead. Dinner for four without alcohol was $332
An exceptional experience! The food wowed in both flavor and presentation, and the service was impeccable. The Refectory is a must for special occasions. And even on not-so-special occasions, I would rather pay a bit more to eat here and leave completely satisfied than to eat elsewhere and leave feeling bloated and disappointed.
Food was amazing. Only downside was the downstairs bathroom is kinda not befitting of a place this nice. They also have a great wine selection and the staff is very helpful. Another thing I really appreciate is the waiters and waitresses explain everything with great detail. Prices are on the high side but worth it. Check it out for yourself!
My Husband and I celebrated our Anniversary yesterday with a spectacular experience here! The service was top notch and the owner Kamal was so inviting and made our visit even more enjoyable with a tour and story of the restaurants history. The Food was great and so was the wine list. We are so pleased with our experience there. We highly recommend it!
The Refectory has been and remains one of the finest restaurants in Ohio. The food is exquisite and the ambience is elegant. As with many restaurants during the pandemic, The Refectory has struggled to continue its history of quality and excellence. My husband and I were lucky enough to enjoy a fabulous dinner there earlier this week. The menus now include a wide variety of “small plates” from which to choose. Every item we ordered was delicious and presented in the amazing fashion of all Refectory items. The service was above reproach as well. We are so lucky to have this incredible restaurant in our town!
Very friendly and outstanding services. Except for the sauces tend to be rich, overall the gourmet is excellent. We would definitely come back.
One of my all time favorite moments. Came here today for my anniversary dinner with my husband and I was NOT disappointed. The staff were helpful, friendly and professional. They even made us a card for our anniversary and brought us an extra desert with candles! You could tell everyone was expertly trained and they did their job flawlessly. The food was the best Ive had anywhere else. The atmosphere was perfect. Everything was perfectly cooked and plated. I will definitely be coming back and recommending it to others.
An amazing food experience. Can not believe how good the food was and not as expensive as I thought it would be. Best restaurant in Columbus !
Always the best dining in Ohio. Superb quisine and beautiful setting. Professional yet friendly service. Certainly a place for special evenings, but Refectory will make any evening special.
Its good but i dont know if its worth their prices. My drink was baaad.
Great tasting food. Very high prices for small dishes but thats kind of the point. Constantly rotating menu with some very unique menu items.
Had such a wonderful evening at the refractory! The building when you walk in is nothing short of beautiful, you almost just want to stand and take it all in.Our waiter, Juan, was amazing, friendly, and so knowledgeable. He made understanding the menu so easy and helped us make decisions on what we ordered. He was also super personable and made it easy to talk to him, even if we needed help understanding what was on the menu. The food was out of this world, and completely new things that we had never tried before. We chose to do the Chefs choice 5 course meal and the Chef has absolutely outstanding skills in the kitchen that shine through his food with amazing presentation and flavors.Would recommend to absolutely anyone and will be back in again just as soon as I can!
The Refectory is likely the best restaurant in Columbus, especially for people who like French cuisine. Its chef was a stident of a French gastronomic legend Paul Bocuse, and it shows. I wish I had enough money to dine at the Refectory often, since every time I go there, I enjoy the food a lot, but also regret that I cannot try everything on the menu which changes regularly. Luckily, my favorite dessert, the warm pear tart, has been offered constantly for the last 3 years. Highly recommended!
One snowy, yucky January Saturday me and my best friend of over 30 years ventured out to the Refectory for the Spanish wine tasting. It was fun! We liked some of the wine, but enjoyed tasting, talking, and reminiscing about our friendship. We look forward to trying more events like this. Thanks Kamal for putting on events and offering simple snacks to accompany the wine.
Since we are in a high risk category weve been eating takeout for all of our dining excursions. The Refectory does a lot more than takeout with their Home Meals. Its a gourmet dining experience thats easy to prepare and delicious to eat. The pictures below dont do justice to the quality of the food. We will definitely be ordering another Home Meal for our next special occasion.
Sevice and atmosphere were very nice. However, food was ok but not that like magically great as I expected.Ive traveled and visited lots of fine dining in many countries. So, I anticipated this restaurant will be good or great like other fine restaurants Ive enjoyed as I also heared a lot about this restaurant. However it was not. Foods were not amazngly delicious but just OK. I think they are stuck in the old receipies and tastes.
The wait staff was very attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu offerings. The fillet mignon was cooked perfectly and the creme brulee was the best Ive had anywhere. I highly recommend the Refectory. We go there every year for our anniversary and other special occasions.
Picking my son up from college to come home for his birthday weekend. Informed him as a surprise I will take him to dinner of his choice. He selects the refectory. We were met with warmth and continued to have attentive and very helpful wait staff throughout our entire meal. All courses were beautiful, Complex and a gastric delight. My son ordered off menu to match my 5 course Chefs Choice Selection. Everything built to the main course -Which was the best plate of food Ive ever had. Scallop and gambo is highly recommended. We are returning in July for the 3 course event for my birthday. Cant wait. Thank you to all the wait staff and kudos to the chef and kitchen team for the best meal of my life!!
Wow! What a tremendous find. We went rogue from the tasting menu, kind of creating our own. We threw Juan (our fabulous server) a curve ball telling him he had to pair wines for us. He pulled Taylor (the sommelier) into the frackus and we couldnt have had a better experience. We love French cuisine and we were happily surprised by traditional cuisine with the chefs unique presentation. The Escargot and Shiitake terrine and Halibut are absolute must haves. And Taylor knocked it out of the park with the white burgundy and halibut pairing. Thank you Juan, Taylor and our heartfelt compliments to the Chef.
The Refectory is the best restaurant in Columbus by a large margin. Excellent service, beautiful plating, and exquisite taste are the hallmarks of the Refectory experience. In terms of high end dining at the best possible cost I have yet to eat at a restaurant that beats the Refectory and I have been to some of the best restaurants in US.We do miss the Bistro menu and hope that it comes back in the future as the pandemic recedes.
We have slowly gotten around to uncovering all of the Central Ohio eats, and stumbled upon my new favorite here recently. First off, this is a place where classic food service and atmosphere still thrive. Our server (Carl) years in the business, so attentive and sincere, made perfect eye contact; he was exceptional. The food was just so good, every single thing was perfectly cooked, one of the most memorable Columbus meals I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to come back, I don’t have anything else to say except everything was perfect through and through, and my previous favorite Columbus restaurant got the number 2 spot after having this!
The words cant describe the delightful time we had at Refectory. We went for restaurant week. We have always been nervous to go, thinking it might not be our thing, but on the contrary, it was perfect. We made a reservation, which is what they prefer, and were sat quickly upon arrival. Our server was great. We loved the calming nature, the ambiance and being able to hear each other talk apposed to having to yell or whisper our conversation. The food was absolutely delicious! Im sure it had to be the best meal in Columbus. We will definitely return (not during restaurant week). We would definitely return for a special occasion. If you havent been, you definitely need to try The Refectory on Bethel for a memorable night and experience.
Superb cooking, very attentive waiters, and you can have a conversation without shouting. Highly recommended.
Food and atmosphere are excellent. A symphony of flavors! Prices were not as bad as I thought and we ate a lot. Would love to go back.
More than once in a single meal, I experienced the best food Ive ever tasted. Its actually a bit overwhelming to have it all at once. I would have liked to have had a nap between courses. Absolutely incredible food.
Menu has become too limited. Moved from Columbus 20 years ago used to go once a month. For me personally too much on presentation and not enough on quality. Service is still five star!
They have amazing wine selections. They changed the menu recently, and we were able to share everything. The waiters were amazing and it is the restaurant when you have anything special. All dishes are wonderful.truly amazing. We are so lucky to have a French restaurant of this caliber hre in Columbus. And the prices are more than reasonable.
Lovely food, service, and ambiance. Had the tasting menu and drink pairing for dinner, everything was cooked and seasoned flawlessly.Favorite dish was the scallops and fresh water shrimp. Another great dish was the venison which was perfectly cooked (hard meat to make that tender and not taste gamey). The parsnips in the venison dish will be impossible to forget, brings a new life to parsnips! The team was wonderful in their hospitality and the knowledge in wine was a huge plus in the experience. Even for someone who drinks wine every day. Felt like family and could really tell how much everyone cared.
I love this location, and a think it is even better in it’s post-pandemic form than before. On our most recent date night, we chose the tasting menu, and it was quite delicious.
During the Covid crisis, The Refectory has remained a strong presence in providing fine dining in Columbus. Take home dinners and summer picnics are delicious. My spouse and I enjoyed summer picnics of fresh corn salad, potato salad, and shrimp--all serve fresh with no heating involved. Take home dinners we have enjoyed include duck breast, loin of lamb, and the recently added pork shank for two. Wonderful first courses have included gazpacho. mushroom soup, and pate. Wine is sold at retail prices.
Yes, the food was amazing, but the staff is what made it truly special. A most enjoyable evening. Thank you Nick and James for the tour and showing us an unforgettable night!
Fantastic service. Took my wife for our 4th anniversary, food was good but not fantastic but that may just be my personal preference. My wife thought the food was fantastic. Wouldnt go everyday but the perfect place for special occasions with your special person.
We did the packed dinner for Mothers Day and it was outstanding. Directions were clear and all of the selections tasted great, even 24 hours later. Worth it and we would do it again! Only wish is that the loaf of bread was huge - would have loved an option for a half loaf.
My husband and I adore coming here. Beyond the profoundly elevated and elegant menu, the ambiance is zen and the service is fantastic. The entire experience is worth what one will pay.
Delicious and beautifully prepared French food. Staff were eager to ensure an enjoyable dining experience.
Phenomenal service, atmosphere, and food. Highly Recommended
Awesome staff and delicious food! Our waiter Justin was so knowledgeable on how the food was prepared, it enhanced the experience. Plus we were surprised with a customized Happy Anniversary Card. Loved it!
Since we are in a high risk category weve been eating takeout for all of our dining excursions. The Refectory does a lot more than takeout with their Home Meals. Its a gourmet dining experience thats easy to prepare and delicious to eat. Food was delicious. Highly recommended.
We always love the service. The small plate dinner was excellent. We celebrate our anniversary with the Refectory every year.
Fabulous meal and great atmosphere. The staff has really went out of their way to make our visit special. Would highly recommend and will be eating here again.
Beautiful atmosphere Covid conscious currently.Waiters were knowledgeable and helpful, cheerful. Wonderful food and dining experience will definitely be back from Pittsburgh to visit again. Love the vibe of the place!
Best restaurant in Ohio hands down. I Cant even find a word to describe how great the food is!! Our server Joe was top notch. 3rd time here and always a wonderful experience. They also have a amazing live music venue!
WOW. Just wow. Justin did a fantastic job explaining every course. Chris made the evening very special discussing each wine pairing and providing wonderful insight to each wine. It was the best Valentines Day Ive ever spent.
Every aspect was top notch, service, food, pacing, ambiance, this is a restaurant that knows how to treat its customers. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Outstanding staff, wonderful ambiance, one of the most talented chefs in the business. Your mouth is in for a treat, the pairings of ingredients and presentation are the absolute best you can get. Considering all you are getting, I found it to be a good value as well. So much more than a Hyde Park, etc for the same money.
Amazing! This place never, ever disappoints. So good you can save it for special events, but affordable enough that you can enjoy it often.
Whether Im paying $40 per plate, or $40 for a 3-course meal during restaurant week, I expect to receive outstanding customer service, and The Refectory nails it each time. As a treat, I have taken my elementary-age son here for Mommy-Son date night during restaurant week, and they have treated us with such respect, talking to my son like a little man, and really demonstrating to him how to behave in an upscale venue. The bar crafts a special virgin cocktail with flavors to compliment our meal, and puts them in wine glasses at my sons request, further enhancing his experience in a majority adult setting. My kiddo ordered the salmon on both occassions, and while he didnt care for the sauce, they make it plain/seasoned for him instead, and he insists its the best salmon ever! I had the duck last time, and tried the prime rib this time; the prime rib is fall-off-the-bone at the touch of a fork tender! The pecan pie is too sweet for my taste, but the maple bourbon ice cream that tops it is delicious! Highly recommend this place for any nice occasion for both their quality of service, as well as the gourmet dining experience.
Spectacular anniversary celebration. Thank you. The staff and the food was simply spectacular.
The sweetest owners you could ever meet and great food. Great for newcomers of Greek cuisine and veterans alike. A warm, comforting place a little out of the way one could likely take a date to.
Transcendent dining experience thanks to absolutely impeccable dishes alongside perfect cocktails. New favorite in the area 😸
However the appetizer course is more substantial and even though I am a big eater, I am still satisfied. If it isnt quite enough, there is always the excellent bread, dessert, or just order and additional appetizer. Chef Richard has raised the bar even higher when it comes to the art of food placement and design. I something new each time just to see what it looks like. Truly amazing.
We had the most lovely wedding dinner and birthday celebration at The Refectory. Especially having been treated to my favorite Moet & Chandon Imperial Brut and an extravagant meal.••For our appetizers we had the Bison Carpaccio and Escargot Terrine. The first course sported the Lobster Bisque, Seafood Chowder, Red and Gold Napoleon salad, and Classic Ceasar with Anchovies. Between meals we were served a strawberry sorbet palette cleanser. For our entrees, we enjoyed the Texas Antelope, Russian Razor-Back Boar, Ostrich Pan Filet, and Seared Sea Scallops. Lastly for dessert we had creme brulee and belgian chocolate. As a courtesy they brought us a maple bacon and pumpkin tarte for celebration.••After 3 and a half hours of conversation and fine dining we left having experienced something rather special. I highly recommend the hospitality, cuisine, and rapport. This restaurant definitely lives up to its 4 diamond Zagat ratings.
Amazingly good heat at home meals. Prepared with all the care and attention to detail as a meal in restaurant, with clear and simple reheating instructions. For safety we are not dining in restaurants still, but decided to splurge on a Refectory take out meal to celebrate our anniversary. The duck (medium rare) and beef (rare) were both perfect, proving you can reheat without overcooking if the prep is done correctly. The serving size actually seemed more generous, especially with the variety of side veggies, than if wed eaten in the restaurant. We did miss the outstanding personal service and ambiance, but you cant do better for a special carry out meal these days.
First time there, was there for our neices graduation dinner. Atmosphere was great, service was great, food was great. Plan on going back for a regular sit down dinner.
Great menu, delicious food and they do a great job around Christmas with the atmosphere. Beautiful inside which is interesting because it doesn’t look like much from the outside. Service was phenomenal, I’d recommend this restaurant to locals as you may likely pass it without knowing and travelers looking for something a little fancy outside of the Short North or Downtown.
I liked the smaller portion sizes. The food was wonderful. So many flavors which melded together perfectly.
Beautiful, classy, wonderful food, great people- weve been customers for years and my husband and my mom and I went for her birthday tonight and had a fabulous time:) They are also doing a wonderful job following COVID regulations- we felt totally safe and comfortable- highly recommend it:)
Great service and love the atmosphere, very romantic. The food was good just very small portions, will leave hungry. Prices are fair. Would recommend.
Entertainment and service were to notch and could was very good.
Chicken full dinner, very good! Loved the black potato!
Perfection of French cuisine. Chef, staff, vibe all ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Best upscale restaurant in Central Ohio. First dining out since COVID-19 started. Did a good job with mask and social distancing, we felt very safe. New format, mix of small plates and full entrees, we were unclear of what was small plate and what was a meal with sides. Food was delicious.
During the Covid crisis, The Refectory has remained a strong presence in providing fine dining in Columbus. Take home dinners and summer picnics are delicious. My friend and I enjoyed summer picnics of fresh corn salad, potato salad, and shrimp--all serve fresh with no heating involved. Take home dinners we have enjoyed include duck breast, loin of lamb, and the recently added pork shank for two. Wonderful first courses have included gazpacho. mushroom soup, and pate. Wine is sold at retail prices. You need to order at least one day in advance on line. Pick up at the door. Meals include cooking directions. Very simple. Meals include lovely sides including rice pilaf, carrots, harticot vert, sometimes purple potatoes. Enjoy. Thank you.
Sevice and our meals were EXQUISITE! Thanks so very much for your service!! Am I returning but of course!! Table setting was amazing! Loved the way our waiter and waitress explain each entrée in detail, you knew exactly what to expect. Each serving was just enough... The hospitality was outstanding!
Meh was my experience. The food was very delicious so no quarrels there. I had the filet mignon and my wife had the duck plate. Very tasty buttttttttt, awful serving sizes. Like literally a four bite meal. The price would be justified because of the flavor but the serving portion is trash! Ive been to an upscale restaurant called Shoemakers in Lynchburg, Va and the food flavor was comparable or even more delicious with a larger serving size. It wasnt excessively large but enough for the way society eats in the US.Tldr: Great flavor, poor serving size portions, nice staff, cool environment. I wont go again just because of portions. But definitely check it out for your own experience.
Our happy place. We love it here and the staff are warm, friendly and genuine. they even know our usuals. Highly recommend the Russian Ossetra Caviar Classic Service, worth every penny. Kamal runs a tight ship, and Richard is hands down very gifted chef. Ohio is blessed. Thank you team.
