I cannot recommend this shop enough!! The catalytic converter was stolen off of my car and I was able to bring my car in right away. The repair only took a few days and they were able to work directly with my car insurance company so I didnt even have to lift a finger. This was easily the best experience I have ever had at a mechanic! If you are looking for friendly, professional and reliable services for your car, then Freds Garage is your place.

After searching for a shop close to my house, I found Fred’s! They were able to squeeze me in super fast and get my car in tip-top shape. Not to mention they went over what was wrong with my car and explained it in simple terms five stars.

Fred and Ray at Fred’s were wonderful to work with! My Check Engine light had come on in conjunction with needing a recall serviced so I asked a local Ford dealership to run diagnostics. Long story short I was told I needed a new engine, among other items immediately and that the car should not be driven. Fred’s is right around the corner so I called and they saw the vehicle right away for a second opinion - an alternator and four spark plugs later I’m back on the road and extremely relieved! The work was quality and timely and the costs were tough to beat. Would recommend this garage and staff to anyone in the Chicago area.

After 30 plus years with the same mechanic and moving from the area I was in search of a new mechanic. Freds was recommended by the staff at Graceland. My Daughter had her brakes done. My car was brought in and inspected. I was given a quote and the work was preformed. The car feels and handles so much better. I would recommend Freds for quality work at a fair and reasonable price. I live near Freds so it made sense to head in when I had a flat tire. I reached out through the website to make an appointment and heard back almost immediately with availability the next morning. Once I dropped off my car, I was thoroughly impressed with the speed at which they were able to diagnose the issue and patch the tire. They were communicative and professional. The dealership I last got service from quoted me a pretty high estimate for repairs recommended on my old 2007 Honda Accord. My fiance had a great experience at Freds with a flat tire replacement in the past, so I thought to contact them to get another estimate for the repairs the dealership had recommended. I called and talked to Ray, and explained what I needed done: serpentine belt replaced, transmission fluid, oil change, front ball joints needed attention, brake fluid, and front brake rotors needed some help too. Like I said, its an old car. Ray sent me their email through text so that I could show them the dealers cost estimate. He sent me a better quote and got my car in for inspection. Ray called me to talk through his recommendations, and I was back in my car after the weekend. During pickup, Fred wanted to introduce me to Ray in person, and it just made the whole experience more personal.I feel like I can take my car here for any issue in the future and know it will be taken care of quickly and priced fairly. Communication was great and they were transparent about their recommendations. I highly recommend anyone in the area to trust their car to Freds. Flash forward 11 months later, place is no longer reliable for repairs! Please see email below that I sent last week to Freds Garage ...no response.Dear Freds Garage I was there the week of 7/6/21 d/t a suspected alternator issue on the car. AAA had just replaced the battery on 6/7/21. Your mechanic Ray assured me that there was nothing wrong with the alternator. Yesterday after driving down to Clearwater FL the car just stops working. I had to have it towed to the dealer here, they found that the alternator was bad and that it fried my brand-new battery purchased through AAA roadside service. Please see attachment . I just want you to know how totally unprofessional your service was, I remember you ( the shop owner) and I asking Ray, ( the lead mechanic) and him blowing me off with my concerns. I knew damn well that there was no way that leaving a dome light on for 3 hours was going to drain a new battery .I just shudder to think what could of possibly of happened if this had occurred while I was on the Hwy driving to Florida.Shame on you,Diana DeGraff

Freds Garage was excellent. Came in town for a wedding and busted a clamp on my exhaust, called at 7:00a in the morning, and they had it inspected, repaired, and returned before 10:30a. Price was very reasonable, and couldnt recommend Freds garage more. Thank You!

First all, when I went online to request quotes/estimates, out of 5 places Fred was the only one that bothered to respond. Secondly they gave me great estimates and performed the work within the time frame they originally said. So everything was perfect. I will not hesitate to take my Jeep to them again.

I had an awesome experience at Freds! The guy at the front was so friendly and kind, down to making sure I had my apartment keys to get home safely after leaving my car keys with them. As for the inspection, I had a unique issue that was specific to the manufacturer so they recommended I get a second diagnosis from a dealership but they promised to do the followup repair at a better price than the dealership would. Overall I fully recommend this place for personal service and fair repair prices!

Fred and Ray were both very friendly and clear throughout the entire process. We brought our SUV in for an engine grinding noise that was 2/3 covered by a new-to-us purchase warranty. It ended up being the Vacuum Actuator and Fred did all the paperwork, getting the work approved, etc., while Ray did the actual repair. Wanted to wait awhile, its been 4 months since the repair, but I am happy to say everything worked out great and our SUV is running excellent since the repair. I recently brought my car to the city and lucked out finding Freds right around the corner from my place! Ive brought my car in twice for an engine inspection and to change my tires. Both times Fred was very informative and helpful. He was extremely patient with my lack of knowledge of cars by giving me time and information to make the correct purchase. I feel very lucky to find an efficient and affordable place to go for all my car needs! As a young woman in the city, I was very nervous about taking my car in but Fred made it a very easy and comfortable process!!!

I usually don’t leave reviews but they really really did deserve one! They went above and beyond! Warm greetings which never happened to me before at auto places. My car had to get some work done for a few hours so I brought my bike to ride back home and they even helped me take the bike out and put it back in the trunk of my car. I have been to so many auto places through the years and as a woman, I felt like I usually get up charge for all the work and also being told to fixed things that really doesn’t need to be fix. They did very good work, honest, respectful, most important is that their price is super reasonable! I finally found a total gem! Totally recommend! Will be back! Id been experiencing some strong vibration and noise, the cause of which was completely unidentifiable, so I called Freds and was able to bring the vehicle in for assessment right away. After a short inspection, the problem (a shot rear wheel bearing) was identified, a quote for the work was put together, and a time for the repair was set up for later that week.Not only was the work completed satisfactorily and well ahead of what was estimated, Fred and his technicians took the time to show me exactly what and where the problem was, which I have rarely (if ever) experience at shops. Fantastic and thorough service!

After moving to Chicago, I was worried that finding a trustworthy mechanic would be a challenge. After doing some research, I put my faith in Fred’s, a local repair shop. Did some research on what might have been the problem with my car and found out it would be impossible for me to fix without the necessary tools. My car battery was dead about a block from their shop and they were so nice to come jump my car and give me a new battery after testing it. I was definetly due for a new one. I also requested an oil change, tire rotation and they checked out my tire pressure, fluids, etc. all within and hour and half on a Saturday. Fair prices too - Thanks again!

I recently purchased a certified used car from a dealership and asked this shop to perform a general inspection on it. Within 20 minutes after dropping off my car, the mechanic called back stating that the rear brake pads and rotors would need to be replaced because they only had 10% left on them and quoted me a price to replace them. As a certified car, the dealership that sold me the car had to ensure that at least 50% was left on the pads. So I called back and asked for a measurement of the pads. Some time later, the mechanic called back to state that he made a mistake and that, in fact, there was 8mm left, which is at least 50% and does not to be replaced. His explanation for the discrepancy was that his mechanic told him there was 50% but he heard 15%. Why he told me 10% initially and not 15% was not explained. Not sure if he was telling the truth but it shook my confidence in them. Will not be going back.

I needed a new battery for my car, and Fred went above and beyond to be accommodating. Once Id gotten a jump on my car, I drove it straight to Freds and he stayed past closing hours to make sure that I was able to get it in! The next morning, he got it ready for me in no time at all so I could use it to drive to work by 9am. I really appreciate the professionalism and service of Freds Garage! Would definitely go back.

A reliable, trustworthy mechanic ranks right up there with a good doctor and dentist (and vet, if you have a pet) on the short list of life essentials; Fred and Ray have that place on my list. Theyve kept my 20+ years-old Honda in top running shape as it approaches 150k miles, on its way to my target of 250k miles. They balance the cost/risk of pre-emptive repairs, while addressing urgent needs, as they inevitably occur, (especially in a car as old as mine). They do their best to source used and after-market parts, when appropriate, to help lower costs. I recommend them highly.

I have a large old classic car. My old mechanic retired and moved out of the city with Covid prompting his decision. I asked around to some friends who are classic car owners, and a few recommended Freds Garage. I contacted Fred as I needed a major brake repair on my car. Fred was a little concerned as parts for my car are a major issue. I told him that I knew all the parts dealers in the country. I took about 10-12 business days (a couple of snafus with the parts, shipping, Labor Day holiday) etc., almost 3 weeks later my car was done. Every step of the way, Fred and Ray, his mechanic, were very responsive, professional, flexible and kind. They did an excellent repair job, I know have great brakes and I am not worried about driving my car in the city. I will now be taking all my cars to Freds Garage. Needed scheduled maintenance, oil & filter change and Im new in the neighborhood. Contacted Fred to see if they service my make/model, which they do, and was able to make an appointment the next day. The people at Freds are honest, fast, personable, cost-conscious, and an all-around pleasure to work with.We walked into Freds very frustrated and left with peace of mind and confidence that we were now in good hands. We had been to a mechanic previously because our engine kept overheating and they had replaced a valve for us (after keeping the car for a week). We proceeded to bring our car back in to that mechanic once a week for the next month and a half for the same issue they had claimed to fix.After giving us a variety of different diagnoses that didnt fix the problem, we sought a second opinion from Freds and it was by far the best decision we made. The staff was able to diagnose (the same day) that the brand new valve we had just gotten replaced by the first mechanic was not opening and either the valve was faulty or the cars computer was faulty. They even recommended that we go back to the first mechanic to have them replace the valve under warranty and told us to have the first mechanic call them before replacing it because, based on their experience, they believe our make/model of car works best with a specific brand of valve.I was shocked that Freds offered a free diagnosis and turned down our business in an attempt to save us money. Ultimately, Freds determined that our car computer needed to be replaced and helped us to decide that the money we were going to spend on the computer wasnt going to be worth it for the value of the car.

My car broke down because the throttle control body needed to be replaced. I had to get a tow and Fred’s was nearby. I gave him a call and he was more than happy to take a look at my car. They knew exactly what the problem was, fixed the car, and had it ready in just a few hours. I used to go to Firestone, but I will now be going to Fred’s for anything I need. I’ve used Fred’s a few times for oil changes and minor services. I also referred my boyfriend there for an engine issue and a tow. They do good work at a reasonable cost and are very pleasant people to work with. I came for an oil change, the price was great compared to others in the area and the service was good and fast.I reached out to Fred 6 months ago about an issue with my car not starting - he told me before getting it towed there, to check the battery. Turns out the battery was dead and just needed a charge. Then it turned out the battery wouldn’t hold a charge and I needed a new one. Fred saved me the Money of getting it towed and looked at, this is why I came back to his shop for the oil change!

I cant say enough about this place! I trust Fred and his staff with my car. The pricing is fair and they are very timely with services. For example I called in the morning about my breaks, was able to have them fixed in the same day. The other thing I loved and is when they did my breaks they explained I only needed one set changed, I feel like other places would of tried to change all 4 break pads out. I appreciate their honestly and quality work. Ive brought my car there on three different occasions and will continue to do so for any automotive needs! :-)

Freds is awesome! Every time I have gone in it has been cheap, quick, and very friendly. They never push getting more work done than I am coming in for (something I have experience often at other places). I have never been to the shop when Fred, the owner, has not been there.

Very good customer service! It is nice to go somewhere that is family owned and personable with their clients. I first brought my car in to get new tires and rims which they did a great job with; fast and efficient.Then about 4 months later I got a nail in my tire and Fred remembered my Husband and told me to bring the car in. It was awesome they were able to repair the tire and not have to replace it. I hated going to the mIni dealership to get my tires done; it was always a pain.My husband and I will continue to go here for maintanence. Thanks Fred!

One time I saw that one tire had lost a significant amount of air. The problem was a nail and the repair was quick and easy. The tire has been fine since. Another time, my side view mirror had been hit and was malfunctioning. Rather than needing a complete replacement, Fred and his crew discovered a pin had been broken when hit and were able to repair this. Both times my car was repaired while I read a short time in the waiting room. I certainly enjoyed that kind of service.

I have been bringing my cars to this business for 30 years as Pong, and had the best service. I have to say when Fred bought the business from Pong I was sad and concerned. I did try a couple of other garages and was disappointed. I have come back to Fred’s mostly because Ray is still wrenching on the cars and he is the zen master with engines. So glad to be back!! Congrats Fred for keeping the quality that Pong spent so many years nurturing. I will never go anywhere else again.

Wasnt happy with the mechanic. Sold me a new battery instead of offering to recharge the one I had; told me my engine was shot and tried to sell me on getting a replacement for 2k. Luckily, I was able to get another look under the hood and was told I didnt need a new engine. The mechanic is oily and the owner supports his tactics in order to drive more business.

My daughter recently moved to the Lakeview area and her first commute to work yesterday started with a dead battery (and one I knew was going to need replaced as well). While she took an Uber to work I got on the phone and ran into Fred. He assured me he would take care of things and he did exactly that. His trip charge to jump the car was so reasonable I passed on my free AAA option. There was a little bit of a tight window from the time she got home from work and the point they closed but Fred communicated with her in the afternoon and as soon as she got home they were right there to jump the car and then were able to replace the battery before the end of the day. Friendly, very trustworthy and reasonable prices!

Yesterday, As I was preparing for a 7 1:5 AM drive out to the suburbs to meet a client, I noticed the flat tire on my car! I called Fred’s garage at 7:20 and Fred answered and suggested I come right over. I did, and by 745 Rae had adeptly put the spare On my car and placed an order for a new tire.I was on the road and arrived in time for my meeting.This morning, I arrived at the garage at 7:45 as planned, and within 15 minutes re-had a new tire on my car and I was off to work!I highly recommend Fred’s garage for great service, efficient work, and nice conversation.I’m so glad I have found a great garage right in my neighborhood.

This is the second time I’ve used Fred’s garage. The first time I found them online and the service was so wonderful, I decided to use them a second time. They’re efficient, effective and incredibly reasonable. Will continue to use them!

Everyone there is great. The business end, run by Fred, is well managed - clear information about pricing, etc. The mechanics are the same that have been there since who knows when (it was formerly owned by Pong) and they know their stuff - I have been a customer there for several years and have recommended it many times!

I have been using Fred’s garage for the past year. They had changed my water pump, repaired a big leak with my AC, and most recently helped with fixing wrong fuel in the car.You can always have faith that they will do right by you, and if there is a problem they will find it for decent price! I don’t see myself ever going to a different mechanic as long Fred’s is standing there.

Great experience and professionalism. Went in with the car in the morning, shared the “symptoms” and got an estimate within a few hours I got my estimate. By the evening the car was ready to be picked up and fixed!

I am very happy with the level of service and quality of workmanship that I received in my visits to Fred’s. For years I came to this location when it was under different ownership, so I was a little concerned when a new owner took over. I’ve gone twice, and both times my car was taken care of very well. They clearly explained all the costs before doing the work, then did the work in a timely efficient way. I picked up my car and had no more problems with my brakes. We took our second car in to deal with some issues with our tires. Again, they called me to clearly explain the cost and nature of work and had my car ready to go before the end of the day. I’ll be taking my cars there from now on.
