Do NOT use apartment people. Poor customer service, lack of follow through. They will take your money and not provide refund of fees due you when you exit agreements. Very little follow up or status update whether you are a renter or landlord leasing a property through them. Very hard to get a hold of and they do not keep their commitments.

Truly an amazing experience! This is now my third apartment through Apartment People and I cannot be more satisfied. I worked with Michael Berry and he was able to show us four or five great units, but the last place he showed us hit all of our marks on the list. They advocate for you during the approval process, make it known that you matter, and I was approved, signed lease, and all set within 72 hours. Great experience, quick, and overwhelmingly helpful. Great gem of Chicago!

If I could give 0 stars I would. First, they lied to us before we signed a lease about something the landlord agreed to clean and repair, and basically used that to get us to sign the lease faster (found out later that the landlord specifically told them he would NOT replace that). After being incredibly rude about us filling out our condo paperwork and fees out faster, we moved in to find out that they had not sent any of our checks or fees to the condo - so literally took our money. I would NOT recommend this company to anyone - they will do anything to get a lease signed including lying.

I had told him on the phone that I had a king bedroom set a living room set a dining room set and needed lots of space. he kept showing me Apartments where bedrooms were only large enough for a queen-size bed and two nightstands at best.

John R. from the Evanston office was incredibly thorough in all of our conversations, and he gave me all the time I needed on the day we went out to see apartments. Our agent was friendly and helpful. We put down a deposit on an apartment which ended up going to someone else—no problem, and nobody’s fault. Except that they never told me we were rejected, I had to call multiple times to find that out. More importantly, we paid a deposit of over $1600 to Apartment People, which they had no problem taking out of my account in less than a day. It’s now been over two weeks, and I’ve called almost every day, and still no refund on the deposit.

The leasing agent Marc had a very rude tone. I asked for some suggestions on good areas up north to rent. He brushed me off as if he was insulted by the question. I sent him an email, and he never responded to it. I called him to give him a few of the neighborhoods I would like for him to search. He didn’t answer when I called. He called me back just to tell me that his computer crashed, and that he can’t help me. I tried to talk to another a different agent and I was put on hold for a while. I called back and they tried to give me a cell phone number of one of the other agents. This company sucks. Very unprofessional and not helpful at all!

My boyfriend used this service to find the apartment we are living in right now. In his words “When I was working with them it was a disaster. I took a day off of work to see 5 spots and they showed me 2. And the brutally hungover guy who showed me apartments was the best person I met there in terms of having their business together.” Fast forward 2 years to moving out of the apartment-now they are needing to show our place and still don’t have their business together. They tell us they are coming at a certain time and never show up, no call or text to say they are running late or cancelled. I waited 3 hours for Charlie to finally get back to me, after several calls and texts asking if he was still coming so I could proceed with my day. Turns out he thought the appointment was at a different time! I have been walked in on while I was in the shower-which is scary for a young woman home alone! Additionally, I have a pet that needs to be locked up when they come-which goes to show that they don’t care about future tenants well-being. I called the office and let them know that it’s unacceptable that they have me waiting around all day and she told me there was nothing she could do for me. They are completely inconsiderate of others time! Do not use this service!

The city of Chicago has renter rights for a reason and my rights were violated during my last week at my apartment by an agent at Apartment People. After the agent and the owner of my apartment knowing that I would NOT be at my place due to an important work meeting (the most chaotic day of my last week there,) an agent brought a perspective tenant into my apartment without any consent whatsoever (not even a 2 day notice-per Chicago renter ordinance) I have all of the text messages and documentation to support my conversation between this particular agent and the 6 others fighting to show my place to get it rented out. This renter claimed that they were on the phone with the owner of the apartment to allow permission of entry, which 1.) I have my conversation with the owner and no confirmation was ever established with him 2.) Even if he verbally confirmed, my rights as a tenant still do not allow an agent to just walk in without my consent.3.) have 1 dog and my family dog I was caring for at the time; if my dog walker was not there during the time she witnessed this whole ordeal, I would have no idea that strangers were inside my place with my dogs and that is a liability in its own. 4) I regularly work remotely- if I was in the apartment at the time, this agent and potential tenant would have just waltzed into my place without consent...Immediately knowing of what happened, I called the office and demanded a manager to speak to. The manager at Apartment People was at least kind enough to confirm the agent that checked the keys out for my unit (which is the last person I communicated with) and put a stop to all showings until I was officially out of the apartment. Why include renters rights in your lease agreements if you do not follow them? Moving out of state, this experience has made me more aware with whom I would go to for apartment assistance, but my friends and colleagues in Chicago are aware of this issue and ironically, they have also had nightmare stories with agents at Apartment People. I would not recommend; especially for adding more stress to an already chaotic move. NEVER AGAIN.

During our third explanation of the kind of places we were looking for he had to keep getting up and taking phone calls. He couldnt give us his full attention. After finally explaining what we were looking for he started to search on his computer and kept saying that we need to ease up on our requirements or we will never find a place. He gave us facts like 1-bedrooms can only be garden apartments in Chicago and that 1 bedrooms are too small for a couple. He insisted he knew better for us and kept pushing locations our of our price range presumably because of the higher commission. He was very rude and insisted that we are in way over our head and to try to collect ourselves and come back in a week with a more realistic idea of what we wanted. Needless to say we didnt. We went with a competitor who took what we were looking for and sent us 40 different possible apartments in less than 24hrs. We were viewing them within 2 days and signed our lease all before this rescheduled meeting with apartment people. We have a beautiful apartment well within what we were looking for our price range and then some. They took down the specifics of what I was looking for, including price range, desired neighborhoods and amenities, and drove me all over the city to look at apartments. I didnt have to pay a penny for the service, thanks to the relationship the Apartment People have with landlords in the city (if a customer rents an apartment through them, the landlord pays them the tenants first months rent, but this is no additional charge to the tenant). She then drove me around so I could experience the neighborhoods, giving me a guided tour of local life in that area. By the time we were at the 3rd, we had developed a sort of short-hand speak because she was sensing exactly was I was looking for and picking up on what qualities in a rental were important to me. Apartment People has made the already stressful process of moving a complete NIGHTMARE for me!My husband and I found an apartment that was listed as allowing dogs and paid money and completed an application before leaving. A few hours later, our realty agent called us and said the owner of the unit actually changed her mind and did not want a dog living in her apartment. We were then offered a full refund for what we paid, as the listing that we applied for was inaccurate. My husband asked if the unit owner would allow a dog that is a certified emotional support animal (ESA), and the agent said he would look into that for us. We did not feel the need to mention that our dog is an ESA beforehand, as the unit was listed as allowing dogs to begin with and my husband did not want to discuss his PRIVATE mental health diagnoses.A few days later, we were told the apartment owner said she would accept an ESA into the unit, and our agent said she had approved our application. However, the next day the processing office said we had NOT actually been approved and that we needed to provide the apartment owner with a letter from my husbands doctor first. We did not already have a letter for my husbands ESA, because the ESA rights guidebook clearly indicates that mental health diagnoses do NOT have to be disclosed. Section 504 of the Individuals with Disabilities Act says landlords have to make reasonable efforts to accommodate emotional support animals! But, despite these efforts not being reasonable, we attempted to get a letter anyways. My husband called his psychiatrist, and the next available appointment to come in to get a letter was after April 1, and April 1 is our move date. So, since it would be impossible to meet the unethical demands of the apartment owner, I contacted the Apartment People processing office to say we were no longer interested in the unit and had found a new place to live. The processing office said we would not be refunded our entire initial payment, as we cancelled our application rather than having our application not be accepted by the apartment owner. So, we were shorted $160 because of non-refundable credit fees! What I would like to know is why did the agent offer us a full refund on the phone when he first heard the unit would not accept dogs, but now we cannot get a full refund? Anyways...What did Apartment People expect us to do?! We put down money based on the information that was provided to us indicating that a dog was permitted and that said NOTHING about requiring a doctors visit and letter. Had these conditions been known to us, we would not have paid anything! So, were we supposed to wait until after April 1 for a doctors appointment and be HOMELESS for a week in the meantime and then be accepted for this apartment after our move date in order to not lose any money?! Or, were were supposed to finish submitting our application without the doctors letter, fully knowing our application would not be accepted for this reason, and then be given a full refund? Both of these options are a waste of my time as a mover and the time of the apartment owner, who could be out there looking for a tenant that is actually interested in her unit!Only losing $160 might not seem like much, but that is a big amount when you are dealing with the cost of movers, packing material, new furniture, and move-in fees. Plus, Apartment People made the error by showing us an inaccurate listing and then expecting us to meet the demands of a lease condition that we did not consent to at the time of payment.Overall, Apartment People showed us a unit with an INACCURATE listing, provided us with FALSE information by saying we were approved and then by saying we actually were not approved, and penalized us for canceling an application that no longer met our needs based on the new listing information, all while absolutely humiliating my husband by forcing him to discuss PRVATE mental health issues!

But Illene was very considerate and keep everything she said. Apartment People fully returned the 1-month rent hold by them, this is very nice of them. Our lawyer also helped us to get the deposit back. I want to say thank you and would recommend Apartment People for my friends!

I had an amazingly great experience with Apartment People! They helped me through the process of finding my first apartment ever in Chicago. From the moment that I was contacted by Shilan (An Agent from Apartment People) contacted me, to the moment that we applied for the apartment that we liked, I felt as if I had someone guiding me through the whole process. Shilan is very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable! She was very good at finding the places that fit all the categories that we had told her we wanted in our apartment, and she made several appointments at great places on the day that she took us around the city to check them out. She was not only great at connecting us with the different building staff/owners, but also she was excellent at giving us advice on what was a good deal and what wasnt. Furthermore, she told us many things about the different areas that we visited, and made sure that we had all of the information that we needed before making a final decision. Once we actually applied for a place that we liked, Shilan was great at checking on us and making sure that we were having a smooth process.

Seriously SO bad. Not just useless but will waste your time, and in apartment hunting you dont have time for that. Filled out my info 3 times. Once on paper, once digitally, and once reitterated it all to my agent. I was told to wait a week or two for more stuff to pop up. I was sent 3 or so suggestions a week later NONE of them fit my requirements (price point and neighborhoods). Finally show up to view 1 aparaprtment a week later that seems peomising, show up, agent is late, finally we get in to view it aaaannnnddddd oh wow despite what hed told me it doesnt have a dishwasher (requirement I had) and is $200-$300 out of my price point...How do I know it was Apartment People and not my requirements? Worked with 3 other agencies at the same time and ALL of them sent suggestions that fit all requirements. I cannot tell you to stay away loud enough.

Heres the thing... if you have stellar credit and dont mind providing just about every single piece of documentation possibly available on your job and yourself(the only thing I didnt provide is a video of my birth) then the service might work for you. HOWEVER this is where they suck and are absolutely worthless- if you get denied for a place, your leasing agent wont lift a finger to help you and that makes me think this is a commission based job. I was denied for an apartment and my leasing agent, Nathan Miller, dodged my calls, ignored me and blew me off after I was denied an apartment. To me thats a pretty classless move. So if you have the time to cruise Craigslist, do not waste your time with this service.

After originally finding my apartment through Apartment Finders I was confident that they would be able to help me with my next complicated search. After the first appointment with an obviously brand new employee I wasnt shown a single apartment and after speaking with the manager was able to set up a second appointment that I hoped would be promising. I will say that this second appointment went great from an apartment finding and niceness perspective but from that date on it has been terrible. They ended up lying to me about the amount of money I would get back if for some reason I was unable to take the apartment I signed up for and have been harassing my roommate and I (two working, professional women who have to be at their offices during Apartment Peoples hours of operation) since that date. They are completely unprofessional and have no respect for our working hours by calling us during work demanding additional information. They have also harassed our bosses with extreme amounts of calls per day to verify employment. I will definitely not be returning to this service.

Trying to review this way since Yelp doesnt want to post for me.This is my second time finding a new place with Apartment People. My Realtors name was Ronak Patel. He was very polite, friendly, organized and well educated on available properties. He was able to find us a fantastic place in just a day! He did show us a handful of places that did not catch my interest. He suggested a place that was fresh on the market, so fresh that they didnt even have the keys yet. Ronak was able to pull some strings and set up a viewing with the current tenant. I was shocked at how great the place was and packed with amenities for the price. Thanks to Ronak I found a great place that was a bang for my buck! Always happy to use apartment people. Thanks Ronak!!

Be careful with hidden contracts if u bid on a property and decide in a day its not a good property, you could loose that security deposit. Waiting on the resolution.

Im taking the time to write a negative review, even though I know it will little effect their already horrible rating--because this company is not only a poor company, they are fraudulent.I called on a listing on craigslist and made an appointment, against my better judgement. On the phone, the agent could provide no details, but assured me I could see the unit I was calling about the next day at noon because the tennant needed 24 hour notice. I arrived on time, waited half an hour. Sure enough, this apartment was not available. Before the agent even looked it up on the computer, he told me I couldnt see it. I asked if it was an actual listing, he said it was and called the building to make another appointment tomorrow. I heard him mention the address in leaving a message. I drove by that address and there are, of course, no units available there.Creating fake listings is highly unethical. Please do not give your business to this company. Ive never heard of anyone having a good experience here.

The service was terrible! Our phone messages were NEVER returned! Two days before we were to move in we called and found out that it wouldnt be ready for two more weeks. We were told we were approved, signed a lease and then were told that we needed a co-signer. The experience all together was horrible and Im glad its over.

I almost feel wrong for giving the Apartment People such a low quality score since I have used them in finding my last 3 apartments. Unfortunately, after the experience I have had this year I will not be returning. Our first appointment was with an obviously new agent that didnt have a clue what to do with our semi-complicated search. We spent 1 1/5 hours with her and at the end of the appointment she was unable to show us any apartments. After writing a review on their survey about my bad experience I was contacted by a manager. This seemed like a fair response to my survey but from this point the Apartment People have done nothing but harass my roommate and I. I think their sales tactics are tacky and I have lost all trust in this establishment.

The agent we worked with was kind and worked hard to find us a place, but when we ended up backing out of the first place we applied for with them, their processing department went completely ballistic on us.We found a better unit on Craigslist with the same rental company, a unit AP was not showing, but the processing people insisted that they should get the credit for renting it to us anyway. They neglected to tell the management company that wed cancelled at all; they had to call us to help sort through the mess, an exercise that under different circumstances might have cost us the apartment we actually wanted. We were fortunate that the management company decided they too were fed up with them, otherwise we may have been out nearly $460 in fees, BEFORE signing an actual lease.Dont expect any slack from them if you end up changing your mind about a place–they apply plenty of pressure to get you to apply, act like pulling out isnt the end of the world, then put the screws to you if you decide to rent with anyone other than them.I chose this place because I wanted to avoid the nonsense, lack of organization and general chaos of renting on Craigslist. If services like this are supposed to be safer and more convenient, Apartment People is not the place to go. Again, their agents are great, but if rest of their machine will do nothing but work against you anyway, youre better off just dealing with Craigslist posters–theres less risk of nonsense, and thats saying something.
