The amenities are amazing! From an indoor pool with sauna and steam room to racquetball courts and indoor and outdoor running track. The areas inside the gym are clean and the new weight room is spacious and allows me to get in exercises at a convenient location before and after work.

Massive gymnasium floor laid out with every weight machine and free weight you could want. cardio equipment also very extensive in the next room. Less amenities due to restrictions but $20 day pass for just using the gym is not bad in my opinion because the gym is top notch. Will return if I’m ever back in town!

Raising their cost to over 90 a month but still have not brought back amenities such as sauna and towel service. Most equipment is off limits as well. Not sure why I am paying more for less. All other gyms in the area are back to full operation and most are half the cost.

Went from being the top gym to one of the worst in Charleston. Their rules and hours are draconian and prohibitive. For nearly a year now all amenities that set this gym apart have been removed, towel service, locker room showers, sauna, steam room, and full sized indoor basketball court. Theres no mirrors for weight lifting. But the cost is still the same. The only thing they have reopened is the pool, but you cant shower. The majority of patrons are MUSC students and faculty who would like to go to the gym during lunch break but cant without showering. It’s been nearly a year and we arent dealing with the same situation as we were last spring. I think it’s time to let your own paying members decide if they want to use showers, towels, and the sauna. They were always optional to begin with. Theyve been on reopening Phase 1 for a year now and during that time have actually imposed more restrictions such as silly separate Entrance and Exit doors, and have offered no hint at when we could expect to move into further phases. I personally have moved to a different gym that offers showers and sauna. Sadly I am still paying for a membership since it comes out of tuition. There has been a decline in membership because of this. A word of advice- start talking to your patrons and see what they want, because they’re the ones paying. But that probably doesn’t matter to you since all the MUSC students pay for a membership anyways, so who cares what they want?

Every other gym in the area has the ability for its members to shower. If you do not have to wear your mask while you are at the machine working out, or swimming, or running, why cant you shower. Someone needs to re-evaluate this dumb policy.

Really enjoy the pool and pickleball amenity, but really don’t use anything else. Kevin and Martha are amazing ambassadors for the MUSC Wellness Center. One suggestion would be to have a smoothie bar for people on the go, which is a nice amenity and also adds revenue to your bottom line.

Unfortunately if you live downtown you have few options. Its the only pool (which for some reason is never cleaned). They raised prices and told no one, and then had maintenance problems all winter that left the pool area with no heat. Nice people, just really poor maintenance. Charleston needs a good YMCA. Dont try to drive there except on the weekends.

I sent an email cancelling my membership due to Coronavirus. I apparently did not fill out the paperwork correctly so it was not honored though they can see from their records I have not visited a single time since that email. For a place promoting health and wellness, I was quite saddened by the Directors decision not to honor my written email to her citing auditing requirements.

Tried to cancel my membership since the facility was shutdown at the start of the pandemic. There was no one to answer phones and no one responded to my voicemails. I tried to get a refund for the months that Ive been charged, despite trying to cancel, and Im told that I did not fill out the optional gym credit form. Apparently members were given an option to be reimbursed for the charges that continued while they were CLOSED. I never saw this email and when I asked about it they avoided the question. Its sad that they feel they need to take advantage of people during COVID. Wouldnt recommend this gym to anyone

Will not let me cancel my gym membership even with coronavirus circumstances. I work at MUSC with COVID patients and do not feel right using a gym right now. However, because I signed 12 month contract they will not let me cancel. I am a frontline worker paying for a gym I cannot use (out of respect for others) and I feel there should be some flexibility with the contract given the PANDEMIC. I feel that this is a real disservice to the community and I will absolutely not be rejoining.

Used to be 5 stars and then they cut ALL kids programming. We thought of the wellness center and all of its staff like family - it was such an amazing community and I was excited for my kids to grow up being part of it. From childcare, to swim lessons to summer camps....now it’s all gone. Such a big loss for the families of Charleston.

After being a member for 24 years they raised the prices to $76 with noadvance warning. I have made many friends there and the staff is wonderful. There is plenty of ways to cut cost in a business. Never mess with your guaranteed revenue stream. Mgt. made a mistake in my opinion and Im disappointed.I only used the gym 2-3 days a week. You guys just lost a wonderful 24 year guaranteed annuity stream. Id love to have someone explain to me how this makes good business sense. Planet Fitness here I come for 19.95 a month.

Wow....the best fitness center! Lets start with the important stuff like....clean....and the equipment works. Moving on...the staff is fantastic. Janis Newton is the director and she runs a tight ship. The instructors are wonderful, inspiring and helpful. There are wight loss groups, hardcore boot camps...and classes with great music. The pool is huge...and often not very crowed. Some parking issues in the early morning. Buy a card for the rest of the day. Really the best of the best.

I have been a member here off and on for a number of years. The only problem with this gym is the parking. If you have a problem motivating yourself to even get to the gym, the wait for parking will kill the mood. People use the spots out front to go to doctor appointments at the Ashley River Tower. If you even get there at 5 when the gates open up, good luck finding a spot, several MUSC employees will be starting their workday and parking there. I’ve sat in the parking lot while waiting and watched several people walk over. I was so frustrated one day I even called parking services about it but they told me they dont have people giving tickets after four o’clock. Good news if you work for MUSC and need somewhere to park. So there is no clear solution, other than to buy the overly priced parking card that doesn’t guarantee a place to park. Other than the messed up parking situation, this gym is clean, has innovated equipment that you can’t find anywhere, and some great classes. I wish it was just more accessible for the non MUSC public who don’t work next door.

It is worth spending money to go to this fine facility. I am excited to go there and even more important I want to go workout. When I went to your typical franchise gym with the lower membership fee it got boring, and it seemed monotonous. It was more of a chore going to the gym. There is always something new at Wellness Center. You will never be bored.

While a few people socialize, this is an introverts version of a gym. Get in, get your workout done, and get on with brain surgery, intensive care heroics, or whatever it is that is next on your crowded calendar. Nicely maintained equipment and thoughtfully crowd-controlled. Avoid the 6AM rush for the best experience. Late-night is best. The pool is under-used and great value for the cross-training user.

I enjoy the classes at the gym however am really disappointed by the lack of evening classes. Having the latest class everyday be 6 or 6:30 pm makes it extremely hard for those with jobs to make it to the gym in time for the class. For me, and several other members and non-members Ive spoken to this is the biggest downside to this otherwise good gym. Group X please please consider slating some later classes.

Updated review: This was a great gym, but since covid they decided to be completely unwilling to work with long time members on freezing accounts even after they agreed to a freeze. I’ve since been charged and now double charged. It’s certainly not the cheapest gym in the area, but it’s definitely worth it. Between the indoor track and indoor pool, you’ll have all your bases covered for training in the heat or rain. They have a lot of classes too, but I’ve never done that myself. Only negative is the parking situation. It’s often a bit of a fight to get a spot if you don’t go early enough.

Staff are nice but for the price tag, not really worth it if you are a self directed gym goer. Theres a plethora of cardio equipment and raquetball courts, but the weight area is tucked away on the lower level and is dingy and full of rusty and broken equipment. There are nicer, cleaner gyms with equipment that is better kept for more reasonable prices all over Charleston. Additionally the hours are very limited so if youre a morning gym person and have to be to work next door at the hospital for an early morning shift, youre not going to have enough time for a hard or long workout.

Overall I think that this is one of the better facilities that I have belonged to and it really is a wellness center and not just a gymThe staff- very friendly and accommodating with guests requestsThe cardio facilities- large area with many machines (lots of treadmills and ellipticals)- some dumbbells and the majority of the strength training weight machines (most are dated) are located in this area- clean and organized well- large indoor track that has windows lining the perimeter which makes running on the track a bit more enjoyableThe weight room (I dont utilize this area as much as the other areas of the facility)- on the lower level of the facility and newly renovated- mirrors lining one of the walls- both free weights and dumbbells along with various machinesThe pool- lap pool with a designated general swimming area/water aerobics area- clean and for the most part consistent with temperatureThe tennis courts- I used these until they closed them for resurfacing (still ongoing a year later)-outdoor track around the tennis courts that is still openFacilities/services that I havent used- racket ball courts- squash courts- basketball courts- Spinning room- yoga studio- child care center- massage therapy (additional cost)- personal trainers (additional cost)

First rate gym. Best in CHS hands down. Nice indoor basketball court and good cardio equipment. I have a parking card and never have issues with getting a spot. Busy Saturday AMs sometimes the lots get filled, so maybe that is what people are complaining about. My only real gripe with them is that they run kids camps out of the gym and they last all summer and every long holiday (Christmas) it is jammed up with children. I love kids I have 3 of my own. I dont love when I come to work out, play basketball and they have the whole court taken up with kids and members arent allowed in gym. The fix would be simple, look out for your members FIRST and keep kids camps off basketball courts.
