Joined in early January 2021; still have an active membership.On-face, Refinery seems very nice -- acres of cardio equipment, a generous free-weight area, even some specialty equipment like a safety squat bar.In reality? The gym seems poorly-managed. The owner and most staff have no idea what their equipment is or does -- multiple instances of asking about specific bars or machines have resulted in a rejoinder to ask Tony (the head trainer). Most of the stiff bars are bent to a non-trivial degree, and I have regularly seen the gyms only deadlift bar in various squat racks -- a testament to the ignorance of the clientele or the negligence of the staff. The climate control in the gym is either faulty or intentionally subpar for cost-savings -- the free weight area is usually quite a bit hotter (as much as ten degrees) than any other part of the facility, and there is regular ice buildup on the ventilation shafts. When heavy rain occurs, the skylights (all in the free-weight area, and directly above the power/half-racks) leak profusely, disabling access to some equipment. There is even visible plant growth in one of the skylights. My impression of the gym, simply, is that it used to be great -- as the website and social media currently flog without surcease. Now, however, it seems as though the equipment is poorly maintained and the building itself is something of an afterthought. If owner/management took precautions to preserve the quality of their equipment and ensure a comfortable environment, this would certainly be the best gym in Champaign as it claims. As of now, however, this is a sad -- perhaps even reprehensible -- shadow of that status.

Great gym, awesome friendly owners. Although the gym is on the smaller side, its usually not too busy, and the equipment is well taken care of. You can tell the owners really care about the place, highly recommend

Great gym. Dated equipment. Is underground so it doesnt have the best natural lighting. They play newer music and cater to a younger crowd. The locker rooms smell kind of funky. They have a steam room which is a nice amenity. My favorite piece of equipment is the heavy punching bag! I alternate between that and the treadmills for high intensity cardio!

The boot camp is pretty low key. Probably good for everyday but not an intense workout. Solid equipment and fairly diverse options. Facilities a little worn but perfectly serviceable. From their website I was expecting much higher end.

Stopped in to see if this was a good gym for my college daughter. Wow! I wish this gym was in Chicago! This place has tons of machines! About 4-6 of every machine! Also free weights and free weight machines. And a great selection of elliptical, bikes and treadmills. Also, a fantastic, fresh juice bar, Les Mills classes and very nice locker rooms/ showers and steam. I joined for both of us. We got punch cards to use whenever we want. The staff and the members are all like family and very welcoming. This place is a hidden treasure!

If you are serious about your workouts, then look no further! This is not a see-and-be-seen gym, but rather for people of all ages (and some of those Silver Sneaker folks can lift you over their heads!) who are looking for a good work out. This is not a social, chit-chatty gym, and that is why I like it. They have great personal training packages and some really great trainers. The best gym in Champaign for sure!

Ive been living temporarily in Champaign for a school program and was fortunate enough to find Refinery Gym. It has all of the most important aspects of any gym: the staff is GREAT, the gym is clean, the Machinery WORKs and you dont have to fight anyone for a machine. On top of that, there is a steam room and they make great post work-out shakes! The clientele is a mixture of all age groups and fitness levels. I want to take this gym to my hometown. Im gonna miss it. This is me!

I have been a member there for a year but unfortunately I will be giving my buisness to another gym now. I went in to workout and also to get my girlfriend a membership, I waited at the counter for quite some time, and nobody wanted to help me so I went on to workout because I was short on time. It was then that Zach, an employee I had the displeasure of meeting accused me of trying to sneak her in, and me too! (A paying member but not after this) he continued disrespecting us and making accusations with his unprofessional vulgar behavior. Threatened to “revoke my membership” LOLLL After this poor treatment I have elected to get a membership at the fitness center down the road. And haven’t regretted it since. They treat me like they actually want my buisness. And to think I was actually about to refer them a member! Well too bad. Zach has cost this buisness multiple new members. Not only was I going to refer my girlfriend, but two of my friends looking to change their lifestyle. Shame on you Refinery! You lost a loyal member.

Ive been travelling the country trying out multiple gyms in every area in San Francisco, LA, Dallas, Champaign, and Chicago - this is by far my favorite gym.Facilities are top shelf; plenty of cardio machines and free weights, steam room, shake/smoothie bar, classes, even child care.Members are all welcoming, and at various fitness levels. But the best part is the staff. Theyve got a great group of people running this place. Ill be back whenever Im in Champaign.

There is an array of equipment that covers just about any workout goal, mass gain or weight loss. There are 7+ different types of cardio machines, two deadlift stations, 3 squat racks, 3 smith machines, and 3 bench press areas. There are machines that cover every muscle group and free weights that go to 130lbs +.The fresh made protein shakes are great as well as the other drink options. The locker rooms are spacy and showers and a steam room are available. The staff is very friendly as well. Trainers and different classes are available. Childcare can be acquired as well. I have been to numerous gyms in town and the overall package provided at the refinery is the best outside the university.

Been going to this gym for over a year now and Im very happy with it. Lots of machines, free weights, staff is friendly and its a very welcoming atmosphere. Plenty of large flat-screen TVs showing primarily news and sports channels. A lot of the cardio machines have dedicated TVs attached to the machine. I mainly do bodybuilding but there are people of all sorts of fitness levels from casual cardio enthusiasts to competing powerlifters. Smoothie bar is great but kind of expensive. The building has some issues with leaking when it rains hard but the staff is well aware of the issue and working on getting it fixed. Wish they would get another deadlift bar lever/holder thing (dont know what its called) because theres only one and loading a bar on the ground is difficult. Other than that, highly recommended.
