Ive been a loyal Avis customer for many years. This is my first complaint in 40 years of renting from Avis. My complaint is how the 2021 Toyota Avalon was given me. The vehicle was not washed, not vacuumed and there was a chicken bone along with a French fry under the drivers seat. I asked the lot attendant to wash and clean out the car. All he did was wash the car, did a very poor job rinsing the soap from the car. The car was covered with soap film, the attendant never did vacuum the car.Upon returning the car, I addressed the complaint to the two men there at Avis. They showed very little concern about my complaint. I will continue to rent from Avis only because their rates are the lowest in the industry. However, maybe the Cambridge, MA location should go back to old school Avis, where they tried harder! This vehicle was rented from the Avis location in Central Sq in Cambridge, MA.
I rented a car on Friday and the lady in the Avis desk was so friendly and welcoming, definitely the highlight of my rental experience!
GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! See if your employer got a code for lower prices!
The employees who helped me were really friendly, competent and knowledgeable. HOWEVER, there was only one employee for two rental companies and the elevator in the garage was not working.Waited 10 minutes outside in the cold with 4 other people before employee arrived (no fault to them, workers have a right to two fifteen minute breaks and at least a half hour break) and then had to walk up 6 flights of stairs to the vehicle. Why are you understaffing your lucrative business? Why are you forcing customers to walk up 6 flights of stairs? You know thats literally illegal, right? The Americans with disabilities act is not a joke. If I had mobility issues I literally would not be able to get the vehicle.Having two rental car companies run by one person all day and no elevator. Honestly, what reasonable person wouldnt be frustrated?
Very friendly capable staff on the phone, at Cambridge Massachusetts Avenue location and at JFK location. Car was in excellent condition.
It was a good price and the car was nice. Granted, I had a discount from employer.I was irked, though, at the email request for feedback. Avis includes a colorbar above a rating system numbered one to ten, asking the following: Based on this rental experience, how likely are you to recommend Avis to a friend or colleague? . Red is 1-6, yellow is 7,8, and green is 9,10. Avis should remove this colorbar, because it is blatantly trying to control the responses of survey takers and, just for that move, I am lose some trust. I rated them an 8 for the survey, but docked 1 star here for that move.
I was over charged almost $1000. No one called me to tell me why and I also didnt even have there rental in my possession. Ive tried calling the place over 50 times but no one picks up. Customer services and a the dispute department did not call me back in regards to the issue. I emailed the so called boss named Tony multiple multiple times and he refuses to answer. My business partner also had a similar issue. I had to change my debit card in order block avis access to my account. Keep in mind we have a commercial account with them. I suggest no one go to this location and I hope the shut down immediately!
The first car they showed me had lot of Dog hair and not clean. The next car they gave was good Mazda SUV, However half way thru the trip the car oil change signal came up and service maintenance light came up. Called the road side assistance took me 2 hrs to get to an agent and they did not have any car in nearest any location. We are half way thru the trip we have another 8 hrs drive . They made me to go to Jiffy lube and oil the rental car . My family and I was nervous and lost 4 hours in middle of no-were and missed our tour packages .The drama we have to go thru OMG, don’t know who is the owner or manager of this Avis location, Horrible !! Guess what, when I return the car the clerk gave me $20 credit !! Wow so you made your customer change oil and service and customer lost 4 hours of vacation trip, so much dram to go thru, and arrived late to hotel and missed tour. We were supposed to be by 6:00 PM in destination instead we went by 12:00 AM !!
It was easy to pick up the car at a neighborhood location in Cambridge MA and then drop it off in Philadelphia. Especially nice, I was able to drop the car off early at a different Philadelphia location than I had originally indicated without any trouble.
This place is a scam and you will have money drawn out your account even after you return your rental. They can also pull any amount out your card at any time as long as your card info is on file. I dont recommend anyone to go there.
Avis treated me very well. My boyfriend decided he wanted to be added and I got a free driver addition and a free upgrade to a slightly bigger car. The desk person was extremely efficient and nice. It was a great experience.
Easy access friendly people great car.
Very helpful staff and good cars, great location. I rented many times from here and the one consistent problem is I don’t think they wash the cars at all. I expect clean fresh cars like all other locations I rent from... especially during covid time. I brought up this issue in person too.
Not only did Avis give me a car that reeked of smoke – but then:When I called customer services – told me that I could only lodge the complaint when I returned the car and all I could do was note the complaint in the fileWhen I returned the car – there was no notation and the customer services rep at the location – questioned my integrityGave me no credit or acknowledgement other than disbelief and “I am sorry”Then spent 45 min trying to reverse a fuel payment charge that should have never been charged, only then to direct me to the 1800 to resolve my issueWhen I called 1800 -they were equally incompetent and asked me to send proof that I paid for gas and would only give me refund when I showed receipt... seriously??? The gas tank was full...Cars are always dirty!!!Avis – customer service sucks.
Had a great experience! Was a given a car better than the one was promised in the app. Great customer service at AVIS Cambridge Branch! Would definitely rent again! Keep it up AVIS!

Update: 09/12/21After I wrote the review below, I didn’t expect that the next thing was to get on the Do Not Rent list. If you’re not familiar with this, once you’re on that list, you may be able to book a car from Avis group (Avis budget..) but won’t be able to pick up the car. This is what happened to me: I booked a car with Avis (Charles Hotel) and went to pick it up, only to find that I am on the DoNotRent list. I was given a number to call but no one answers it, and their voicemail is full. All what Avis Charles river said was that this is in regard to the time I rented a car from their central square location. So far nothing else explains their actions. All but to conclude that Avis customer service department needs new up to date policies and means of communication with customers. Disappointing.Previous review:The car smelled like cigarettes. It was dirty and most of all, it was not what I rented, it was an suv and cost me extra to keep refueling it as it requires much more gas. Also apple car was not supported as it is an old car
I booked a Toyata Prius hybrid online, which has a mile per gas of ~25. However, I got a mitsubishi outlander, which has a mile per gas of ~9. Although the space in the car is similar, the gas actually cost way more, which I consider NOT SIMILAR at all.
Good customer service. Is generally crowded and takes quite some time to process the rental.
Car was excellent, Eric at avis cambridge was very helpful!!!
The employee showed up 10 minutes after opening and the pick up method was very slow and not structured. I will not rent from this location again. It was a huge pain! Harvard square location is better
The first rental I was given had a flat tire, I went back to exchange it. It wouldn’t have been a problem but I was in a rush. I am disgusted by the fact that rental car I received was dirty. There was empty bottles in the car and used coffee stirrers. It’s alarming that rental cars are not being cleaned in between customers. I am very unsatisfied. I’ve been renting cars from Avis all year and this is the first time this has happened but I’m definitely reluctant to rent a car from avis again.
It was easy to check in. We got a nice car and dropping off was easy.
The availability of cars at the Central Square office, with the best rates around, make this a winning combination. The excellent customer service is the icing on the cake!
I had the most AWFUL experience in this office in my lifetime. Avis should consider re-educating your employee or close this office. Many people waiting, but only one employee working. I waited for 40 min to rent a car. My turn came. I said I want to rent a car next Saturday, he said its sold out, cutting my saying and without getting which date I want to rent. I said Not today, but next week Saturday. He said Will you wait until I help other people? There were few people behind me who seemed to rent a car on that date. I said Yes.After all people left and waiting for 50 min in total. There were only us in that office. I asked to the employee again. But he was neglecting my question. After neglecting my questions several times, and rudely said Are you renting a car without knowing type of the car?.I heard him saying to other customers Thank you for your patience several time. But his attitude towards me after all people left was totally different; He was relieving stress to me. I talked to him with patience not to waste my 50 min of waiting. However, his attitude towards me was rude from the beginning to the end. After asking to him with patience, I decided to leave the office without making a reservation. This is frustrating experience. This guy was acting like a BABY. Avis should consider re-educating your employee or close this office.
I love this location the guy is excellent and very respectful and he knows his job well done
Ive rented here a few times and always had a fairly smooth experience. Usually very affordable (though, I think zipcar is cheaper if you are only renting for under 3 hours). My only complaint is that about half of the times Ive rented, there has been a group of students take a very long time because they dont have something set up properly (i.e. how the university is paying for rental), or they dont realize you need a credit card or that being under 25 may cause fees. Once, I was waiting in line for about 45 minutes as these issues were being addressed - very annoying!Renting through the app or website is super easy and makes check in very simple. Please do this ahead of time!
First, I would like to point to the constant problems this location has with their telephone lines and the long lines they often get to pickup a car, I have experiences similar to those described in a few other reviews.Focusing on my most recent experience; I just got a survey after my rental and even though I rated it 1 star they still prompted me to leave a Google review, so here we go.I checked the receipt from my rental and I noticed an extra day charge. I rented the car on Saturday and returned Sunday, after the closing time at 3pm. I had used the after-hours drop-off service at this location before and I had not been charged an extra day. When I called to inquire, an extremely rude staff person who told me this had been a policy in place for a long time and to go check my previous rental receipts (which I just did and I was correct, at least from my previous rental returned Sunday December 1st).I indicated in the survey that they need to better train their employees in customer service.
So difficult to contact them. Ive called everyday almost every 20 minutes and could not reach anyone to extend my rental. Finally I got them and extended and when it was all said and done I was OVER CHARGED. Again I am trying to reach them to figure out why I was charged so much but again cant reach anyone. Its ridiculous if you ask me. I wont EVER deal with these people again. If you think you may need to talk to someone while renting or if you dont like getting over charged then look elsewhere.
Third time I have rented at this facility and all of them did a great job and went above my expectation. Very nice, friendly, helpful and the car is well kept. They are my to go to car rental in my area.
Pick up and return were fast and convenient. Car is clean and new though damaged a bit on the front. Rate is low and competitive with other brands
The location was easy to get to for pick up and return. The price wasnt so bad and the car was clean when I collected it. The staff failed to mention some damage to the car but I recorded it myself. I do think had the staff brought the damage to my attention I would have been more comfortable driving.
All good, but unable to return a car on the Cambridge, MA, 24/7 having a key box seems idiotic. Any other rental car uses cameras to control out of hours drop offs.
Thank you Leo for going above and beyond to grab the car and noticing my injury! I truly appreciate it!
Keep receipts and take pictures. Someone processing the vehicle must have claimed that the fuel level was empty and I was assessed $130 if fuel surcharges. Luckily I had a receipt and photo of the full fuel gauge and the Avis customer service line refunded it.Other than the attempted fraudulent charges, my experience was fantastic.
The car we picked up in Boston had not been cleaned. It also turned out to have mechanical problems (the front end shimmied, there was a grinding sound in the back, and then to check engine light came on) so we had to do a swap 100 miles down the road, going out of our way to the airport north of Hartford, CN. The swap was easy (although we were questioned as to why we didnt stop and fill the car up before we brought it in -- seems rather nonsensical). When we returned the car in Huntsville, AL, the booth in the lot wasnt manned and we had to go all the way into the terminal to do the return. Very inconvenient. Not our best trip with Avis.
The agent at the Cambridge location is extremely helpful and friendly. I returned my car at Logan airport and forgot my GPS in the car. While waiting for my plane I received a call from AVIS lost and found. Five days later (today) the phone arrived via UPS. Great, caring service.
Not worth even a star. Had an extremely unpleasant experience here. Long line, one guy working at 1PM on Sunday, He didnt properly answer our simplest questions, because hes busy.
Incredibly long line, even early in the morning. The people working desk didn’t seem to care or try to pick up their pace at all. They were leisurely making jokes and not doing anything to help the situation. Waited over an hour and a half :(I will literally never use this car rental place again and advise everyone else to do the same.
No 24/7 return is odd, especially since you have to return to a parking garage. Currently open at 8 am, not the 7 am listed online.
My Avis rental experience of a Chevrolet Suburban 2015 for one week (Aug 20 - Aug 27) was awesome. The car I received was in excellent condition and it rendered me and my family a wonderful service while we traveled from Boston, MA to Ithaca, NY to drop off our daughter to Cornell. The staff at Cambridge, MA rental office were very nice and polite. The pick-up and drop off was easy and there were absolutely no hassles. It was well worth the money I spent for renting. I think Avis conducts its business in truly professional manner. Avis is fully living up to its reputation! I recommend them highly to all those who are considering renting cars.
Wait time to get the car, as well as to return the car (keys) was too long. Locating the car in the parking lot was not easy. Car was not clean!
Renting from this particular Avis location is always a pleasure because of the consistently courteous, helpful staff. Their hours are more limited than the airport, so thats something to take note of, but not at all a problem. One reviewer whined about the pickup location of the cars. The cars are upstairs in a parking garage. Whats the big deal? This is an urban environment. I am always happy to rent from this location because of the same friendly faces I always see behind the counter. Renting from this location is an enormous improvement over any airport counters Ive ever seen.
Really long wait time for getting to the counter. There was only a single person helping when the line had about 30 people. The lines could easily be better managed considering the fact they know beforehand the number of reservations to expect on any given day.
If you can please try your best to avoid this place. Not only the service is terrible, the garage is extremely confusing. Because you have to wait for half an hour to be attended, people become irritative and impatient, including the customers. You have no way to know the mechanism until you are in front of the attendant, who was rude. I dont usually give negative comments in google. But this experience was the worst ever!
Too hard to return vehicle. I pull into garage and theres a sign saying area full. Go to 7 floor. I go there and knowone is there and no marking telling where to park!. I go all the way back out of parking and re-enter. This time I ignore sign and drive up to someone cleanining car. I leave keys and parking slip in car. Walk over to office. They tell me I have to give them parking ticket or I will be charged $35 more. I walk all the way back to car and get parking ticket. Then they told me at know time should you leave the keys in car? At know time was I told what I would need to do to return there car??? They should have a paper stating there return policy seeing its different from any avis or budget I have ever rent from. Im disgusted with that operation!!! I would not refer them to anyone.
Avis really should close this office. One person was working there on a Friday afternoon. She seemed miserable. There was one guy in front of me. He reserved a Jeep, which of course they did not have. They tried to give him an Explorer and he said no. Three phone calls and 20 minutes later she gave him a Camry and he was on his way. Then its my turn. Of course they do not have my premium car. She offers me the Explorer. I say youve got to be kidding me. I want the car I reserved. We dont have it. So give me a Camry. We dont have any cars left. I said so you just gave my car to the last guy? Then this woman started getting hysterical saying I called her a liar and screaming all sorts of things and calls security. Some 70-year-old guy shows up and starts menacing me, telling me to leave. So I walk outside to call Avis and then a filthy Kia Optima pulls up. They must have been cleaning it because the mats inside were soaking wet. I was already a half hour late for a wedding and facing Friday Boston rush hour traffic so I took the keys and left. I used to think Avis was a good car rental company but I have had problems with them recently. I would advise steering clear of this Avis office. If you must use Avis there is an office in the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square. I think I am going to avoid Avis in general from now on. I dont need the aggravation.
Bad Experience renting the car. I rented on a Friday evening at 5 pm and I was told that I could avail the key drop on Sunday as their office closes at 2pm in the afternoon. However I was charged for an additional day after doing the key drop. I tried calling the location multiple times to inquire about the same, but the call was never answered. Disappointed!
All excellent ✌️👍
Always a good experience at this Cambridge location. Kudos to all the staff and the manager
It was a quick and easy process
Not worth your time. Long, slow lines and bad customer service. Car wasn’t even filled with gas. Unsure if the managers are lazy or dishonest.
1. My booking was for one way from Boston to LA. Booked a standard SUV for 5 of us for the long trip. When I reached the location, they said they have compact SUV. They asked I should check on other locations for Standard SUV.We (me and my co drivers) somehow drove till Syracuse where we exchanged the compact with Standard SUV.2. While booking one way trip nobody mentioned that they are going to charge us per miles and no unlimited milage is included. They explicitly told us about each and every thing included in the contract but not this- no unlimited milage. Considering 3000+ miles trip, our final bill amount exceeded by whopping $1000!!! It is very easy to skip unlimited milage thing while signing contract because till now I never ever have to bother about it because every time I booked the car I got unlimited miles included. My mistake and there gain.Yes, I called customer service but nobody helped me out. So dont even try to divert me to any customer service contact number. This was the first and last time I used your service.
Insanely slow processing and long lines
Horrible
Terrific service, perfect customer care and, overall, one of the best car-rental experiences Ive had - by far!
DO NOT USE AVIS. My girlfriend and I were delayed in returning our car because, after getting a flat, we found our car had had its spare tire removed. We were left to sit on the side of the road for three hours (we were told tow truck would come in 30 minutes). We were assured by an Avis representative that the two truck would be able to carry both of us, but it did not. Instead, I had to leave my girlfriend to walk to a safe location while I was driven an hour away to get a replacement car (I was assured by yet another Avis representative that we would not be assessed for a late return since Avis had removed the spare and delayed an excess 2.5 hours in sending a tow truck). Upon returning the car, Avis still assessed a $117-dollar late return fee. When I called Avis to contest the charge, the representative I spoke to flatly refused to refund the fee or to allow me to lodge a safety complaint for making us sit on the side of the road for hours for what should have been a five-minute flat tire change (customer service representative said safety concerns didnt require a conversation). I am appalled by Avis’s indifference to the ways in which they inconvenienced their customers, and shocked by the nonchalance over the fact that customers are forced to spend hours unsafely perched on the side of the road when the problem could be resolved in five minutes.
Rented mini-van Kia Sedona from Avis-cambridge(350 mass ave). The windshield wipers stuck during rain on highway for few minutes and the wipers leaving streak marks hindering the visibility. Had to pull over the car for the rain to stop. How can Avis deliver faulty vehicles without proper inspection putting customers at danger?
I would not rent from Avis if you can avoid it. I reserved a car, but there were no cars available when I went to pick it up. Waited for 2 hours and a car finally arrived from out-of-state. The car had low tire pressure and the staff told me to fill it up myself. Along the journey the tire pressure started to fall, so I had to stop at every gas station along the way. Eventually ended up stranded on the side of the highway with a flat, so I called roadside assistance. They informed me that I would not be charged for the switch as it was a pre-exisitng problem. Also, they guaranteed an arrival time of 1 hour - it took 3. Finally got up-and-running and returned the new car at the end of my journey. Three months later I receive a letter stating that my credit card will be charge $70 for the roadside assistance. I gave them a call and they threatened to charge me $300. Given that I missed two business meetings, received my car two-hours late, and sat on the side of the road for 3 hours I figure I receive a discount not a fee. Ironically, you get charge an extra 24 h rental fee if you return you car 1 h late. Thanks a lot Avis.
I would recommend them. Very helpful and polite staff. Car in good condition.
Extremely poor customer service. The manager proved highly unhelpful when an issue arose regarding my reservation and refused to work with me in resolving the problem, wasting more than three hours of my time.
Use Budget, not Avis. The man working at the Avis desk is rude and incompetent.
Convenient location, easy pickup and dropoff
Terrible customer service, had to wait 70 minutes to get the car, long line, one guy cover both Avis and Budget, then the gas was mentioned full but it was half, that took another 10 minutes to fix, 1:30 hour??? Seriously! ?
Friendly greetings and service.
Very confusing layout where the Avis is combined with a regular parking garage. No attendant outside to let you know where to return.
In addition to the receipts they gave me being $5 less than the amount that ended up being charged to my credit card, they were so incompetent that they double-charged me and my friend (ie, billed both of us for the same car because we used one card as security and a different one for payment).
Poor customer service
Excellent service and honest
