Great place! They help save lives & go out of their way to accommodate all people!!! #26 (matt)
What can I say...I love working there...we do good works!
First of all, I must say that I cant stress enough to the average civilian just how important an organization like HFTB is to a veterans in the City of Bridgeport. I wont prolong this review, only because I interned there a few years ago, right before they were blessed to partner with Kick for Nick, which ultimately allowed for the opening of the Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes home for women and infants. HFTB provides a variety of services to the homeless veterans population and with the addition of the womens program, they have gone beyond most any other program of its kind, in the entire country. They partner with tremendously dedicated community organizations to feed, clothe, and help provide all kinds of services to their veterans and in return, those veterans are able to help others and give back to the communities they live in. I will never forget my experience there. As a female veteran, Im grateful that I could be part of what their success!
Best Place For Vets... catered Free meals, or you can cook your own... semi-private sleeping areas...hot shower... curfew, but not unreasonable... keep your head up, follow the rules...they can get you rent subsidized housing...
Let me first say that the donations and support given towards the home of the brave are gratefully received by each and every veteran at the home for the brave, simple things like soap and can goods, donated time from professionals really make a big difference to the men there. But there is another side to the program that needs a major overhaul it starts with certain staff members showing a level of respect to the men in there that yes might have overall personal issues but still deserve to be treated with respect and the word respect doesn’t go far at the home for the brave.Home for the brave is a structured environment and rightly so but structure doesn’t give any clinical program managers or case managers the right to belittle the clientele and break a spirit that has for the most part already been broken due to past or current situations that brought them to the home for the brave.I had a case manager that never paid me any attention just only when it was due to an infraction of policy. I would try my best to keep my distance from her but because she was my case manager I had to go to her for assistance. When I tried to get things moving on my own then she would be a part of the obstruction to hold me back from getting myself in order. I can remember a few instances when I would approach her at different times and she would say to me “I’m busy I do not want to be bother right now!” It blew my mind and placed me in a deep state of depression I asked myself where I can get help because no other staff member wants to step on the others toes. Just because she was having a bad day due to what she said was her coworkers not pulling their fair share of the case loads didn’t give her the right to ignore a veteran in need. I believe that the case worker position is one of the most important positions at the homes for the brave and if your heart is not in it then it is time to step down and allow another to take their place. If by chance there is somebody not truly pulling their share of duties they should not be afraid to terminate them instead of moving them from position to position.Let me be clear Homes for the Brave is a necessity and has helped many veterans find their way back on their feet but just basic humanity is lacking and care in service. I believe the operational staff had gotten so caught up in the ways things USED to be done that they do not think practically I really pray that the new CEO/Executive Director can turn that around. I would really like to get a chance and speak more in depth with the new director and share my full experiences with them. . May god bless every veteran that has to set foot into that situation!Very RespectfullyMichael Hankins
