My friend and I had a guided tour with Paco and had a blast. Went trekking through one of the streams just outside of Boone and caught quite a few nice trout. Paco was super helpful in teaching us how to cast and where to cast to catch them. Would highly recommend using Due South if you ever want a guided Fly Fishing trip.

My boyfriend and I decided to try fly-fishing for the first time and were not sure what to expect out of a guided tour. We are from Florida, so this type of fishing was completely new. Due South Outfitters was absolutely amazing throughout the entire process. Macy and Max were very helpful and accommodating in the booking process, they fit us in last minute and were very responsive to all our questions. Our guide, Karson, was more than we could have asked for. He was super informative from beginning to end, running us through ALL the details, tips, tricks and fun facts, giving us information about the area (he is a Boone local!!) and just making the whole experience as enjoyable and memorable as possible. We will be booking with Due South again and definitely with Karson for some more wading and float trips in the future. Cant wait.

Had the amazing opportunity to do a float trip with Max Beck. The trip was amazing and Max was an extremely knowledgeable guide. He’s wise beyond his years, and it showed with all the fish we caught; the biggest one was a 17” brown. If you are thinking about taking a float trip for some awesome fly fishing, look no further than Due South Outfitters. They are professional and know their trade. I will be going back.

I did a half day float with two boats (myself and my two daughters) last year and couldnt be more pleased with the experience. Max and Austin were fantastic guides and did great with my daughters who had never fly fished before. Of all the fishing trips weve been on over the past number of years, my daughters enjoyed this trip the most.

I’ve now gone on both the wading and the float trip, and will definitely be back every time we visit the area. Both trips we caught tons of fish. The guides are awesome! They are really knowledgeable and friendly. Couldn’t ask for much more.

If I could give more than 5 star, I would. Spent the day on a full day float with guide Max (owner) who did an amazing job for us today. The boat was well equipped, the gear was high end and the food and drinks sustained us for the day. Max obviously knew the river very well and he put us on a lot of fish. As novice fly fishermen, max was patient and gave us good advice. I could not be happier with our choice to go with Due South outfitters today and we will be using them again for future trips

Three of us went fly fishing with Carson this morning. I had no prior fly fishing experience. Carson brought all necessary gear and succinctly explained and demonstrated the basics. In short order, we waded in and began to fish. Everyone caught fish as he calmly walked us through what to do. Several nice sized rainbow trout were caught and released.I hadnt been fishing in many years but I hooked a nice sized rainbow trout and Carson told me exactly what to do to keep the fish on the hook and to patiently bring it in. We really couldnt have had a better or more knowledgeable guide than Carson. Id highly recommend him and Due South and would definitely use his services again.

This was my second trip with Drayton Moore. Had a great day with 31 caught, mostly rainbows. I learned so much the following day I felt confident and caught another 16. Ended the day early because the arm could not hold on any longer.Perhaps I can return in December.

I booked a float trip for my wife and I for her first fly fishing experience. Macy and Drayton both were extremely accommodating with our schedule, allowing us a later start time than normal. My wife had never cast a rod prior to stepping into the boat. Drayton had her casting within minutes. As we anchored in a pool giving her a chance to practice as my rod was rigged, BAM! she hooks a Rainbow. Things just got better from there. She had me down 2-0 before we knew it and I had to work to keep up with her as we hooked up with 20+ fish including a nice wild Brown. You simply cannot have a bad experience with Due South!

Decided to give fly fishing a try. Not only were these guys professional, but they were hilarious. Had me laughing the entire time. These are the guys to book if you have children as well. As far as fishing, I booked in the off season. All the guides I called told me the fish were “turned off”. When I called Due south they worked with me to organize a day around the weather and stocking schedule and put us on at least 50 trout, 12 of which we caught. Nice work guys! If you visit Boone and fly fish with anyone else you’re foolish. These dudes are top notch. Thanks guys, see you next year!

I am from Nashville, TN. Booked a trip with Macy over the phone. Easy to set up the trip and got email confirmation right away. This is a long review, but you should read to the bottom.I went on 2-day (morning half day) wading trip. Fished with Max (got lucky because he is normally on float trips in TN). Both days were amazing. Ive been on several guided trips for fishing and hunting, so I want to make note of what really stood out.1. Combination of fun and learning. I think that a $ investment in a guide should be more than just a good time...and equally I believe it should not feel like school. This was a perfect blend. I am a new fly fisherman (3 years roughly) and so I needed a quick tune up from the get-go as well as along the way. Max helped tune my roll cast and hook sets in the parking lot before we even got in the water. Once we were going, he helped tune my casting, mending, and hook sets all throughout our time on the water. He even did a major diagnosis and correction of a problem I have had with roll casting for 3 years. Additionally, he taught me 8 or 9 different more advanced techniques for casting and mending line. Finally, reading water. HUGE. Max slowed us down at every spot and explained why we were fishing the spot and why other spots like it would fish similarly. AND, it was a blast. Funny stuff happens on the water. There were almost as many laughs as there were fish (wait til you read #3).2. Gear and Tackle. I am not a $1200 outfit fisherman. I fish on a budget. With Due South, I fished a top of the line Hardy outfit for 2 days. It was a treat. Also, tackle. In my experiences fishing with guides, I have been able to learn pretty quickly who knows their tackle and who just loads their boxes with the flies that usually work on this stream. Max knew his stuff. He ties his own flies, and I tell the truth when I write every bug I threw caught fish. He even shared with me some of his tying techniques since I am a beginner tier.3. Fish. Guides cant guarantee fish. Due South didnt...but they did tell me they were going to put me on as many good spots as they could until we catch some fish. 49 good fish in 2 days. 49. The fishing was ON. I even caught my PB rainbow just beneath a submerged boulder. I am going to dream about that boulder. I did not imagine having a 2 day stretch like this--we caught a LOT of fish and covered a lot of good water in the process.I will book again with Due South next time I can come back to the area.

Ive used this company twice in the past month. The fist time was a solo guided wade trip then a float trip with my husband.Alyssa was my guide on the wade trip. I was very happy to have a female guide. She was attentive, helpful, and very patient. I caught maybe 10 small trout. However it was the first time I had ever been trout fishing.I will probably be using this company again for a wade trip for my husband and I during spawn season.Nick Featherson aka Gator was our float guide. He seemed to know what he was doing. He was respectful and knowledgable. He was also a good driver... We road with him an hour to get to the Wilbur dam and back. We caught around 25 trout.

We had An absolute blast! Can’t wait to go back and will definitely be doing another trip with Karson. Karson was very knowledgeable and took the time to teach us a number of different techniques and answer all the questions we had. In addition to his fishing knowledge, he knows the area like the back of his hand and recommended some great places to eat and things to do in the area. For our anniversary we decided to take a shot at fly fishing. From our first call, Max and Macy guided us to the best experience we could have and in my husbands words, it was amazing! Max was a very patient guide as we tried to break habits of fishing with a rod and reel. We caught some amazing trout and loved the scenery of the river. We were impressed with Maxs expertise, knowledge and how friendly he was with all the other guides on the river. Before we even returned home we were trying to figure out another time when we could return for another great adventure guided by Due South.

My husband and I had the best float trip with Max. Max put us right on a couple of good sized rainbows and caught a total of about 20. My girlfriend and I are beginner fly fishermen and we booked a full day wade trip with Patrick. We had such a fun time exploring a beautiful creek and caught lots of rainbows and some brook and brown trout as well. He provided some lessons and was very patient with us. Nick and Grayson took my teenage boys and me out this week for a 1/2 day local water trip. As first timers, they taught us a basic roll cast and had us in the water in no time. Nick and Grayson were exceptionally knowledgeable and patient with us. We all had an amazing time and, best of all, my boys ended the day with a great enthusiasm for a new sport to pursue.We would definitely use Due South - and Nick and Grayson - again.

My experience with Due South was very disappointing! On two separate occasions they did not follow up on the booking. On the second booking after committing to a trip I called back to confirm only to be told sorry we had some scheduling problems and we cannot fish with you on that date.They need to get their act together and therefore I cannot recommend!

Great first time fly fishing experience!!! Austin is the man with the knowledge (Im sure they are all good) The owners seem like they have a solid business model and put a lot of time and creativity into making the best outfitter shop in the area. Austin is one of those guides that meets you on time, stops so you can get a cup of coffee on the way to the Watauga, he will fill you in on all the local - private land vs. public turmoil, patient when you have a few bad cast that end up in knots, and get you educated on what the trout are eating by siphoning out a few stomach samples from some of your catch! This is the high-level. Highly recommend this group. If youre going for the first time, go by yourself and learn. If you are experienced, this is the way to do it. Get chauffeured in a drift boat on the Watauga and crush it! Who knows if you ask nicely, you can get a turn paddling. - Drift boats are cool!

Man this shop is awesome! I was passing through town on a business trip and wanted to find a small stream to catch some wild rainbows. I came to the shop and Patrick and his wife drew me out a map and sold me a few flies. He then gave me a quick 101 course on fishing these small streams and I was off! Patrick told me that the fishing had been slow and to be patient......2 hours later..... I had nabbed 13 wild bows on the droppers he recommended. I would highly recommend stopping by the shop if you need some help or want to use a guide who knows his stuff! Thanks again Patrick!

Excellent group of folks. Did the clinic last Saturday followed by a float trip with Austin down the Watauga on Sunday. My dad and I have both been fly fishing for a number of years and we both found the clinic to be very insightful. A few areas of opportunity but all in all money well spent. Sundays float trip was excellent. Austin put us on the fish and was great company. Definitely looking forward to a return trip.

Was lucky enough to spend a day fishing with Drayton. I really can’t say enough good things about this guy. He’s fishy as hell and a good guy all around. Literally had us on fish ALL DAY . A lot of fish, like lost count a lot .We drifted the Watauga river, the water was low so we were able to get out and fish on foot quite a bit, including casting dries to rising fish during a bwo hatch.EPIC

What a great experience! My expectations were met beyond what I could have thought. Nick and Shawn were saints on the river showing their patience beyond their years. They must have retied almost thirty nymphs. I learned how to dry drop and drag like a professional. We caught almost 30-40 trout between the three of us.The fellas and I have been raving ever since. My daughter and I went on a full day Drift Trip with Patrick this past weekend 9/10/17. It was her first time fly fishing. I had fished twice before with Patrick on wade trips. All three times our party caught fish all day long. Not only is Patrick a great companion to fish with (a lot of fun) but I have never fished with anyone who could read the river and find fish like he can. Not only did he put us on fish, but he had the patients to coach and share his knowledge with us all along the way. When I asked my daughter how she liked it she replied it was awesome Dad (priceless).

Plain and simple, if you are planning on booking a guided fly fishing trip in western North Carolina or East Tennessee (Watauga River or South Holston River) then do it through Due South Outfitters, and more specifically book Max Beck, you’ll be glad you did. I called and booked the trip the day prior with no issues at all. I opted for a half day float trip on the Watauga River.I showed up at the fly shop at 0630 as instructed, and found Max already there waiting for me. He didn’t waste anytime at all and put me in HIS car, and off we went. On the way there, Max informed me of what I could expect from the day. By the time we got to the ramp, I was super excited. After a quick gear check, we launched the boat and started out. Instantly, Max put me on the fish and it just kept going throughout the day! I caught so many Brown Trout, and Rainbow Trout that I lost count. By no means am I a professional fly angler, Max is just that good at what he does. Several times we floated a section in the river and I missed some fish, Max rowed the drift boat UP river and we floated that section again and provided me with additional opportunities. At one point he did this three times. I knew I had the right guy, when another drift boat guide that was passing said, “I remember when I use to be able to do that”.If you like your guides to be knowledgeable, professional, communicate effectively, and do everything possible to put you on fish, then Max is the guide you want. I can’t wait to come back and do it again, and when I do, I know who I will be booking and booking it through!

My brother and I had a full day wading trip with Patrick this past weekend. We wanted a memorable time and it truly was! We caught by far the most and largest trout we have ever caught, and we have done our fair share of fishing for years. Lunch was provided and was delicious. I booked a float trip with DueSouth and it was a fantastic experience. I am a full time inshore fishing guide on Anna Maria Florida and have been fishing my whole life. I know what it takes to put together a good charter. Patrick exceeded every expectation I had for this trip. His knowledge of the local waters was vast. His fly shop is small but is slam packed with everything anyone would need to outfit themselves. I can honestly say that the trip Patrick took me on was easily the best experience I’ve had on a fishing trip.

Just WOW! Fantastic!Perfect! We had the best time fly fishing with Austin of Due South Outfitters. Everything was very simple, organized, informative and fun at the same time. Karson grew up here in Boone and he knows his angler Craft and our local waters. Fantastic experience that started with teaching casting, knot tieing, rigging, reading the water, setting the hook and landing the big ones. He put us on tons of large fish we caught with his flies. I attended their free intro course this past Saturday. Ive done plenty of freshwater/saltwater fishing before, but never tried fly fishing. I was a little nervous, but Meredith and team did a great job with all of us novices!I also took a 1/2 day trip on Sunday with Will, who does a great job. Hes obviously great as a guide, very knowledgeable and patient. He knows all the great spots and we were hitting trout all day. Someone with more practice probably would have pulled in 40 that morning, but I even got about 20. Id definitely recommend Due South/Will for anyone looking to try fly fishing or just looking for great guides to find the great spots!

An experience of a lifetime! I wanted a memorable experience for my son and I to fly fish in the NC mounts and it was an absolute blast! We caught 65 trout! One of each type, rainbow, brown and brook. We were in the water for 4 hours but time flew and stood still at the same time. SO MUCH FUN! Our guide, Carson, was very knowledgable about fly fishing in the Boone area - where to go, what to use, etc. I couldnt recommend this shop more. Awesome experience!

I had a 4 hour local wade trip with my guide Jake this past weekend. Due to his local knowledge and drive to provide the best possible experience, we caught at least 60+ trout during our trip and had an excellent time doing so. Patrick (owner, and our guide for the trip) took my Dad and I out for a day of fishing and it was one of the best days of fishing I’ve ever had. Having not fished in many years, Patrick was patient and really supportive of me throughout the day, always offering tips and assistance while also providing positive feedback when I did something great. I dont know the Boone area well, and stopped in this past Saturday just to ask where would be fun to go wet some flies. The young man behind the counter (Carson? I could be wrong about that) could not have been nicer, he directed us to a lovely spot and rigged up a couple of flys for us to take out to try. He took the time to explain where to go, how to fish it, and what to look out for. Blew me away to find out that such a well-spoken young man is still in high school- he had me ready to use him as a guide by the time I left. Will absolutely consider for my next guided trip.

This week took my family out on a fly fishing trip. This was the highlight of the week for me, for my dad and for my two nephews. Our guides, Max who is the new owner, Draydon (May have spelled wrong) and Travis were so accommodating, so helpful and just extremely down to earth guys. Felt like we made three new best friends. I caught 15 trout, my nephews 22 between them and my brother 10. Guides are super patient and our trip was supposed to be early in the AM and they changed it to a little later bc the river was going to be better bc the dam was opening and they wanted us to take advantage of that ... I appreciated them reaching out and offering the better time slot .... customer service is key and so are people are take pride in their job!!! They supply all gear. Highly recommend the floating trip

Patrick, Meredith, and the whole crew at Due South are a reel class act. I organized a family float trip for myself and six others who had never held a fly rod. The crew put us on quality wild fish all day, and even gave me some tips on local waters for when I ventured out on my own during the rest of our vacation. I would highly recommend Due South Outfitters to anyone. Great job guys!

Recently, my sister and I went on a guided trip, we caught several fish and learned a lot on the water. We ended up with Max as our guide who was incredibly patient and honestly informed and great at his job. We caught rainbows and browns and had a good time taking on the river. We go on a fishing trip every year but this was by far my favorite trip. We also had Austin guiding our other boat and although it’s not my first hand experience, I heard he did an incredible job too, they caught over 15 fish. They were also honest with us that a half day trip would likely best accommodate us which showed us they are a stand up business that cares about their customers. So overall I would definitely recommend booking a trip with Due South if you are a first timer or experienced fisher.

I was a little suspect when I saw 107 5 Start reviews (too good to be true) but after fishing with Patrick on Jan 6th I am not surprised in the least. I have used guides for hunting and fishing over the years, but Due South stands out as the best. I was given excellent instruction (my first time with a fly rod) and had a complete 5 Star experience. I would recommend anyone interested in learning how to fly fish (or any experienced angler for that matter) to contact Due South.

This was my first time fly fishing, and I had a great experience. I caught between 20-25 fish and had fun learning. My guide, Kyle, helped me improve as the morning went on and gave several pointers.I feel I could now go out on my own and have some success fly fishing.

Patrick and Austin are amazing hosts and guides. Very patient and supportive with a couple of us newer Fly fishermen. They are experts on the waters of the Watauga River- we floated in Tennessee and had hits at every hole. Their coaching and guidance was invaluable. And just a couple of great all around dudes.

This outfitter is absolutely best in class in every facet of the experience. They have an incredible fly shop stocked with top brands from multiple manufacturers in the industry. The shop is staffed by knowledgeable and friendly staff members that want nothing more than to share their love and excitement for the sport of fly fishing with their customers. To top it all off, the guiding service that is offered by Due South is nothing less than outstanding. I’ve personally been on 3 trips in the month of October with them. Two of the trips were with my kids where they were taught to fly fish by Nick and Patrick. My kids now love the sport and rave about their experience. This past weekend we bought a full day float trip for six anglers (3 boats). Total we netted approximately 100 rainbow and brown trout. 7 of the fish were of great size (18” and above). The guides rowed us for nine hours and provided a great lunch. They worked tirelessly to ensure we had a great experience and that is exactly what we had.
