If your child has special needs, please look elsewhere for a smaller program with experienced, dedicated staff who are willing to address bullying and foster inclusivity. Also, emails in reponse to concerns are far too long and rarely address concerns. They did allow outside assistance.
The Y is as good as history during covid19. Ferndale location is closed forever, Lynden is closed and Im not sure they ever plan to reopen it. And the Bellingham location is completely closed on Sunday, which doesnt really matter because you need an appointment to even go, and need to wear a mask between switching machines, a serious health compromise. Ironically the Y has become bad for your health. If you feel energetic and like going, well you cant because you need to make a reservation 24 hours in advance. Many of the amenities are closed so your membership isnt giving you all you paid for. Gymnasium closed, just not worth it. If you workout later rather than early in the day it will be closed. I realize many gyms are like this but theyre as good as history unless they stand up as an organization and quit waiting for a day that may never come.
Whatcom Family YMCA is a true gem for the community! I don’t just say that because my name is Jim (“gem” and “Jim” get it?).Whatcom Family YMCA is not just a gym (another one) it is community hub. I won’t start listing off all the programs because my thumbs will tire before I would get done. The “Y” brings everybody together and we all need that...right?Also, the Director of Fun, Tammy Bennett is awesome!
I been to various YMCAs throughout the country and this one lives up to the expectations people like in a full service gym. Its a less modern one than most but all the equipment is in top shape. Theres the pool, locker rooms, full basketball court with regulars, dedicated racquetball court, exercise machines to cover every area of the body (more than one for some exercises), plenty of free weights, a yoga floor that can hold 100 people, kickboxing area. I only been to this one once but it exceeded my expectations after reading some of these reviews. The only con is the parking if your vehicle is big since this is obviously in downtown bellingham, and the price is higher than other gyms since the YMCA is simply way better than any other gym in almost every city. Its a full service gym so you get what u pay for. I prefer the Y because its more than weights and treadmills and I can trust their billing and professionalism since its a nonprofit that goes back 100 years. I never had a horrible experience at a Y location and you wont get tired of the same old things because there are multiple ways to exercise here. The demographic is also balance with young and old. It doesnt attract creeps like some gyms because its an established organization with policies that are reliable.
Lots of broken equipment in the weight lifting area. They changed their cancelation policy to make it more cumbersome and there’s no way to get a refund.Their parking lot is very small so it’s unlikely to be able to get a spot at a reasonable hour. This is not a huge deal if you don’t mind paying for any street parking you can find.At one point in time, this gym used to be okay, but the prices have since increased while the quality of the gym has declined.
The gym is hot & stuffy with little to no cooling in effect. It’s so hard to breathe. As a result, it smells horrible with a bunch of sweaty people mixed in. The building is vertical. I feel like it was not really planned to be a gym. There is not a lot of variety for weight use. The equipment is fairly older. Granted, the Y will move to a new building in about 4~ years. The staff is okay.
Im from Blaine and I think this gym is the best Ive found in the area. They dont require an inordinate commitment and the price is right for what you get. I like the city feel of this YMCA and the fact they have a rock climbing wall if you want. I was coming from a different YMCA in Louisiana and Tess helped me have a seamless transition to my new YMCA community in Bellingham. Boy am i proud to be living out here and have a solid gym i can go with my wife. The only downfall for me is its not a short drive from Blaine and sometimes it gets overcrowded. That being said, i like the competitive spirit and have never had an issue getting a workout in!!
The doors have an accessibility feature but they get stuck a lot and become difficult for anyone to open. The rock climbing area is non-accessible, which is unfortunate as everyone should be able to access all areas and activities.
Ive been working out at the downtown Bellingham YMCA for over a decade. This is a gym for people who have come to work out, and they do offer many different types of workout programs. As one who wants no more than a good, solid, and stable, weightlifting environment, not a fancy, expensive or trendy gym, this gym is ideal for me. I can go in, perform a given days workout regimen and shower, or sauna and shower, and leave. The staff are courteous and helpful. I love the Y!
Could use a bigger pool, and a couple more classes. Also the first Y I’ve used that doesn’t give you excess to the spin room when no ones there. If you travel a lot the Y is the place to join because you can go to them all.
The downtown Bellingham YMCA is not worth going to. There are a half dozen other gyms in town that are less expensive and have higher quality equipment. Not to mention the horrendous parking situation. While the YMCA is a decent organization, unless you are going to (better yet, able to get into) 3+ classes a week, a membership here is not worth it.
Facility has a lot of what I want in a gym. Id appreciate it if they had some kettle bells on site. Functional fitness is a priority.
The faculty itself is fine. Pretty typical... but I would give this place a zero if I could. This place doesn’t understand that they are the closest thing to a Rec center in the area, and the aquatic center is a not a reasonable solution. They treat the working poor like they’re not fit to use they’re facility. This place seems to play favorites with families and people with children. I have to have a place to shower on my time if I am to find a a place to live. Your showers hours are a lame attempt of helping people, yet another poor system that doesn’t actually help people move forward and keeps them bound to your time schedule. Going through here and paying for a day pass is like going through customs. Every ymca in America has a daycare, and doesn’t need to treat the general public with Disdain. I have never been greeted with such distrust, or more red tape to simply lock-in an affordable place to shower while living on the road. Just a really frustrating experience.
I had to cancel my credit card because I could not cancel my subscription here about a year ago. Since then a lot of changes happened that make me uncomfortable to get a membership here. Also seams to be management issues because our company was in the talks to give them our services (for cheaper than their current one) and this contract was in the works for a good part of the year. The YMCA management team ignored all correspondence and played our entire office.
The people who staff this Y are fantastic. Helpful, friendly, knowledgeable about exercise, weight loss, and getting older. Parking is not too bsd. Free parking is available behind the Y, and on street is 75cents an hour on state street and streets around downtown. I hope for a free parking spot, but always carry quarters, and never have had a problem.
Minimum equipment, crowded, Low class, people steal stuff, no help from staff, trainers are questionable. In my opinion this is probably the worst place for people to work out. I’m had a membership at over half the gyms in Bellingham. Worst one so far in my opinion. Also, was told not to drop weights. Umm you try lowering 100 pounds in each hand to the ground slowly from the bench press position, also try not hurting your shoulders while your at it. Opinion based info here.
Per childcare: they must either be overworked or understaffed which doesnt put me at east for leaving my child there.I called twice hoping to speak with someone about the program (to learn about their teaching and nurturing methods) but had to leave a message both times. My call was never returned. My wife and I decided to pay a visit, hoping to see the facility and meet the childcare coordinator but we were not really welcomed by the desk staff and had to push them to at least contact the manager of childcare and explain that we previously called twice and never heard back. When she was finally reached the coordinator relayed for us to leave our name and number at the front desk and shed get back to us. She never did.Weve been told the childcare program is good here but thats just hearsay. The inability to reach any staff person within that program has left us a feeling theyre either unreliable or simply overworked. We will be visiting the facility in Barkley Village, weve heard that one is of equal or better value.
Discovered today that this ymca is not part of Skagit valley ymca membership. Disappointment in th slow and uninformed usual behind th counter. Not sure th introductory price of membership is worth it... Not in towns like mount vernon and bellingham at least.
Cute facility with GREAT classes. Take advantage! The space for yoga is at the top of the historic building the club was built into. Watching the sunset over the Bellingham skyline while doing vipasana is something magical.
Great place to have a great time.
Love this place. Dont listen to Jeffery Thistle. The weight room is old but the community at this YMCA is awesome and to be honest, the old building and old methods of doing things make this place homie and comfortable.
First rate facility and staff which provides invaluable support and enrichment to our communitys children and members.
Wonderful building, the old architecture makes me look forward to going. Terrific staff and programs makes this gym my favorite above all others
I love this place because either opens early and closes late during the weekends. Someone must have not read the sign on the front doors but this place does not open at 8 and close at 2.
This Place totally sucks. Outdated as hell and incompetent young staff.Over priced monthly fee. Other gyms have better parking and a huge savings on monthly membership.
The shower area is not well cleaned and steam room is a biohazard because the don’t clean enough ...but over all ok place.
Horrible, non experienced employees. Sent my kids to a child camp one year and they hated because once again of the non experienced, impatient teens hired to work. I wouldnt recommend the place.
Terrible customer service. Ill spare the details because weve all been there at least a few times.
My favorite gym in town.
Old outdated dangerous weight equipment, and no signs of replacing them anytime this decade.
Lots of programs for a wide variety of people
Excellent!
Love it
