Will, Andrew, and Madeline were SO helpful and I cannot write enough great things about this store and it’s employees. Best. Customer. Service. Hands down.
Man oh man what a great place. I was driving in Baton Rouge (up for the day from New Orleans) and broke a pair of sunglasses. I did a Google search for what I was looking for and found this place. What a great shop! I love being on the trails and I never knew this place existed. Great stuff and great staff. I will drive the hour or so to come back. My new best friend for my outdoor needs.
Very helpful staff. I went in to get some information regarding a Hobie and even though I told them I wasnt buying today and simply doing research the staff member was helpful and took all the time answering my questions and giving me advice. I will be back and buying my Hobie here. They offer rental and even a demo day whose charge goes towards the purchase of the kayak.
I love the backpacker. They have so many niche products and things you cannot find anywhere else in town. Perhaps you could find it for 5% less online but the service is well worth any equal or lesser cost. I don’t want to buy my ski equipment without trying it on.
Will was extremely knowledgeable and helpful in explaining the entire Hobie line. Once we narrowed it down to two kayaks, Will took me out on the beautiful lakes at LSU for a demo. When I left, I knew 100% that I had selected the right Hobie for me. Its refreshing to find an outdoor shop thats a true outfitter. Ill be driving down from Jackson, MS for my next Hobie this fall. Thanks for the great service!
Camille W. helped me find the perfect pair of on cloud shoes!! She was extremely patient, helpful, and fun! Great sense of style too, so you trust her judgement!!
Ive been a customer for almost five decades. Service fantastic as always. Only quality products.
Purchased a 14’ 360 Hobie Pro Angler. Will Easton was my service rep with Backpacker. I purchased many of the options and Will was awesome. He knows all the Hobie products and accessories as well as their other kayak products. Whole purchase experience was first class. If your looking for a kayak, Will at Backpacker is your man who can answer all your questions and help you through the purchase process. Will and I are now good friends.
Such great service, everytime Ive been in. Most recently we needed a larger backpack.... because high school. I dont know why these kids have to carry so much these days. Anyway, we ended up with a NorthFace Borealis after some help from one of the sales associates. Wish I could remember his name. He was very helpful. ALSO, they have ski packages. They have a vacation specialist and take Louisianians skiing during NYE and Mardi Gras. Prices are reasonable as well. Place makes you want to do all the outdoors things!
Clothing and gear store for the big kids! Always have a good selection to choose from.
Staff was super nice and helpful. They talked to us about products without being pushy or trying to sell! Just had a conversation with us. Store has great variety and amazing prices, will be back to purchase camping gear soon!
My girlfriend and I recently decided to try out casual camping and hiking. We came here and Andrew and Regan were incredibly helpful! Regan helped us find the right size backpack that works for us, and Andrew told us about tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping mats. My girlfriend and I quickly realized that many of the products here are out of our budget, but Regan and Andrew still helped us out and gave us lots of advice. Andrew was especially helpful, and he showed me websites for local trails and camping recipes, and he told me about his own experiences camping and hiking to help me understand what to expect. I did end up buying the book 50 Hikes in Louisiana, per Andrew’s recommendation. We will be going with cheaper options for gear for the time being, but if we stick with hiking and camping we will definitely come back to The Backpacker to purchase better quality gear. My experience here was very pleasant and the employees really want to help customers find the right stuff for their purposes. The employees are experienced and know what they’re talking about, and they’re super nice and helpful and fun to talk to. I left the store feeling motivated and excited for camping!
Must have been 10 years since I was in here. I was happy to see theyre even still around, but after stopping by, its very easy to see why.An online backpacking company missed their delivery target for a pack I ordered for a back country hike. When I realized I was about to be in a bind, I drove up from New Orleans to snag their Osprey Exos pack for my trip. Well, the pack is awesome - it blew my mind as far as comfort. But I really want to talk about the experience at the backpacker. The employees will not let you leave until they know you have exactly what you need - and they are so competent and informed on everything. If you can save 10 or 20 bucks buying online, ask yourself, is it really enough of a difference in your bottom line? The answer is, NO.Thanks yall for everything! The trip was amazing with my new pack.
Great selection and great service! Adam Miller was very helpful in helping me select a pair of on Clouds. I highly recommend Backpacker.
Very knowledgeable on their products. I was there to pick up some snow gear, because I was researching different products online. I can tell you there is no replacement for the ability to try the gear on and ask questions to the staff. I would have gotten the wrong items online but I was able to see for myself how things fit and what each product offered over the other. I am very happy with my purchases and commend the staff for all their help. No substitute for personable customer service. Thanks guys!
Placed an order for a FreeFly top that was out of stock everywhere else. One of the representatives from the shop, Nick, contacted me to make sure I was getting the correct color shirt that I was after because the site and the style I had chosen had a slight difference from their actual stock. Extremely great customer service, he couldve easily sent me the wrong color but actually took the time to take pictures of the different color shirts and make sure I was getting what I was wanting.
Great customer service very clean store and though we didnt buy what we went for we did find a very nice cooler for a great price. Highly recommend this store for camping gear.
Disatisfied with the kayak the I purchased due to the fact I went in wanting a kayak with the stability to stand up and site cast. I ended up with the passport after comparing it with the next model up (excuse my lack of knowledge, outback I believe?)After my first trip into the water, the stability the boat has, is definitely less then what I was led to believe. After a few discussions with Nick he said he sees guys way bigger than me (62 190lbs) stand up in the pass port with ease. Im not saying it not possible, but even attempting to stand up to pee is sketchy.I called the day after, which a staff member took my information due to, nick, I believe being out of town. After 4 days of the anticipated call, I contacted Nick and discussed what I am writing here w him along w info on a bent mast on the drive system. (I did not go into any shallow water and hit anything hard or abnormally)He said he would get back to me to see if there was anything he could do and asked to give him a few days as times were busy. Here I am a month later, 3 weeks after the promised returned phone call and had to text nick to call me which he did to inform me there was nothing they can do.May be just a disgruntled customer at this point, but when I explained what I was looking for, I was very specific and feel I was lead on for the sale to be made and now that, thats happened.. Im reselling a boat that I ended up w that doesnt come close to what I asked for ..The new vibe shearwater 125 and even the cheaper acsdemy pescadors seem to be a more viable option and if youre worried about a pedal drive, get one cheaper on ebay and buy a decent boat elsewheres, but again, this is strictly based off my experience and you may be ok with feeling bamboozled. ... Not my thing though.End of the day: I was lied to about the capability for a sale.Edit: 03/18/21 in response to the owners response - instead of reaching out to a valued customer, the owner, below, responds publically vs calling and discussing this issue with me directly. Are you talking to everyone who reads this review or me? (Rhetorical question )
Came to get equipment for skiing and was very disappointed with the small selection. I used to love this store and have shopped here for many years. So sad to see how the quality of this store has dwindled over the years.
This store is the best out of all outdoor stores that are a local company. 2 full floors of outdoor gear for those that are experts to first time. Warm fire place to bring everything together. They also book trips, check with them before going to the store. They have a big selection of clothing and camping/hiking gear. Would be nice if they did a rewards program like Masseys for repeat customers.
Very helpful and patient staff. Got all of what I was looking for.
The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, and made shopping easy (not pushy). I would recommend shopping here for all your outdoor needs!
Purchased some gear for our upcoming ski trip about a month ago. When I finally realized that we were charged twice for an item I called and spoke to Nick, the manager. He figured it out and straightened everything out without hesitation. Highly recommended store, not only for the awesome gear but mostly because of the customer service. This is how you earn customers for life. Thanks Nick!
Tyler was great in finding shoes at both the Baton Rouge store and Lafayette stores that I was looking for. Unfortunately one pair didn’t fit. When I texted him he was able to order what I needed and said I can return the shoes when the others are delivered. Thank you for your assistance with this, especially at this time of social distancing, self quarantining, etc.
Can’t give them enough stars! Peter and James were amazing! Went to multiple stores to find Hoka shoes and The Backpacker was by far the best store with the most helpful and knowledgeable employees! And comparable prices! Will definitely be back!!
Had just what I needed very friendly helpful staff!!
This place is great! The staff has always been helpful, even when I am not making a purchase. Today, I stopped by with the hopes of purchasing a kayak. They did not have exactly what I was looking for, but gave me excellent advice and offered to bring in my request from another Backpacker location. The staff also seems to really enjoy what they do. The pricing is reasonable, and sometimes they will beat Amazon or other online retailers.
Very good store and very nice people
Excellent service, one of their sales people took the time to help me with getting everything together to go work hurricane relief in North Carolina. I couldnt remember what I needed and he kept asking me do you need this and what about this. He was very helpful.
We always find that the staff at The Backpacker in Baton Rouge is friendly and helpful, and today was no exception. Shelly helped us find the perfect hiking shorts/pants for an upcoming trip, and took care of ordering for me since they didnt have the style/size I wanted in store. She made the experience hassle free and gave good recommendations for both my husband and I. Thank you!
I came in to the backpacker today to get a good kayak paddle, and found the one I wanted. A great salesman named Brock somehow managed to have me call the company that I just ordered kayak through almost cancel my order and buy a kayak from him he was so good. We were only dollars away from making the deal when I heard the sales manager yell from the back room “I am not going to keep on forever with this guy” (talking about me) it immediately drove me away from spending my $2000 there. Great store layout, great brands, great salesmen, but management it making it tough on them to make sales.
The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They have constantly sold great products at a fair price. They stand behind what they sell. My family and friends have been happy campers for 30 years. Using the proper gear for the adventure. Thanks for the support.
Very knowledgeable, and friendly. The store is clean and the inventory is there. I will shop there again.
Best assortment of outdoor gear I have found in this city. They helped me select a new day pack. The sales people were familiar with the outdoor activities in the area. There was some cool nature photography upstairs.
I was leaving town the following morning for a fishing trip with rain in the forecast, without a raincoat. I called them as they were closing and asked if they would stay open for me to come pick one up. They had 2 picked out on the counter for me as I walked in. Great customer service and great products. Definitely recommend.
I am going on a trip to Antarctica, and the staff put my worries at ease by answering questions and reviewing my itinerary to decide what gear was best for me! I visited the store several times and every employee was patient and very knowledgeable! Knowing I have all of the essentials that I need, I feel more confident going into my upcoming adventure!
Good place to get camping gear. 4 stars only because I have gone here twice and not stayed long enough to do a solid review.
So far the few trips here have been great. Connor, Charlie and some other gentleman of whom I didnt catch his name were very helpful. After much searching for toddlers wool socks to no avail I finally was able to secure a pair at the backpacker. Thanks guys for carrying stuff for the little bitty people too :-) acts 2:38..
Fantastic staff. They were all over the store and had an answer for every question I asked. The selection of merchandise was great. Ive been on the lookout for a good pair of shorts and they had plenty of choices.Been going for years and will definitely return again.
Excellent store. Wide variety of brands and products, helpful consulting staff, and great atmosphere. The prices are also good, compared to stores that retail similar brands! I will definitely be back.
Staff was super knowledgeable and friendly. Gave recommendations but wasn’t pushy about buying the extra stuff. Great experience every time I walk in. Very cool atmosphere as well.
As someone who knows nothing about hiking and camping I came to the right store. The guy who helped me (sorry I forgot your name!) was super helpful and patient and was super knowledgeable about camping. He helped me find the right shoes and bag for me. To the reviews complaining about Backpacker being too pricey, they offer the lowest price possible. They even price match so if the manufacturer posts a flash sale on an item, you can just show it to them and they will adjust the price.
I hate shopping, except for shopping at BACKPACKER!!! They carry such unique clothes! And every time I come, the employees are extremely helpful. And, theyre HAPPY (unlike a lot of retail stores) because its fun to work in such a great place!!! Backpacker is my absolute favorite store!
I went in with a ton of questions and the staff was SO helpful. I got fitted for a pack, they had lots on info on shoes, and even answered my questions I had about their dog gear! It’s so hard to get good customer service these days and this place never ceases to amaze me with the consistently polite and knowledgeable staff. A+
Awesome store. Love running through and checking out all the great gear. Staff is super helpful also.
Best Place for Fathers Day Gifts! I can rest assured that virtually anything from The Backpacker that my children pick out for their dad for fathers day will be well received. This year it was a Yeti Hopper two 30. The kids gave it early because they just couldnt wait! All around, The backpacker is a great place to go to get quality products, on-trend, with great service.
I just started backpacking, and I love The Backpacker. Yes, I can sometimes find items cheaper somewhere else, but I have to spend a lot of time looking, and I dont get the expert advice that I get at the Backpacker. After trying other places - online and local - I pretty much have decided that its worth checking there first. They have a great staff, they have everything you need, and they carry the best brands. I even bought my dogs backpack there. I was able to let her try it on instead of just hoping for the best and ordering it online.
Excellent staff explained all features of ski jackets we purchased. Charlie was very helpful fitting my entire family . You get what you pay for and more. The entire experience was an enjoyable one.
This was my first time visiting The Backpacker. The service was incredible. Chloe helped me find shoes for an upcoming trip. She was very knowledgeable about the products and what I would need. She was also patient with me. The only downside (and the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5) was that the store did not have my size in the shoes that I loved and neither did the Lafayette store. This also happened with another pair of shoes. Still, I went home with a great pair of shoes and a greater understanding of the best materials for activity. Thanks, Chloe!
The Backpacker is one of the coolest stores in Baton Rouge. They carry a large variety of products for all types of outdoor activities. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. Its my go to place if I need something specific and have any questions. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is a novice or an expert in outdoor sports!!
Great place for all your gear needs. Great staff and selection.
Always great service and great selection of products. I always stop here before going snow skiing to get some clothes for the trip, and they have a wide variety of products and sizes. You can find clothes for toddlers, children, teenagers, and adults. Ive been shopping here for the last 30 years.
Nice location with a little bit of everything for outdoor adventures. Service varies depending on staff present but all are knowledgeable with the equipment. They seem to do price matching because every price I cross checked online was the same. Good place to handle gear and get fitted while deciding on your final load out.
Staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive during our visit to the store.
I wanted bright colored river shoes and even though they had no current stock, the clerk told me about the upstairs discounted selection. The staff was so friendly and helpful.
Wonderful experience purchasing my Grand Trunk Firebelly Print hammock at The Backpacker! Upon walking into their Baton Rouge Louisiana location, I was greeted by friendly staff asking if I needed help finding anything. I was immediately directed to the location of the Grand Trunk hammocks. I initially did not see the style I wanted so I asked if there was stock elsewhere and they found the print that I wanted! Thanks to the helpful & knowledgeable staff, I can enjoy my spring break in comfort with my new hammock.
There is no shortage of excellent customer service at the Backpacker. They make shopping easy and pleasurable...... especially for someone that does NOT like to shop!!!
The store is just amazing because they do price match! Their assistants are very helpful and polite. A tall guy on the second floor help me and my girl friend select some sleeping bags for our first camping trip. I think you can definitely find the outdoor gears with professional explanations that you need in this fatastic store.
First off, let me say that I love a deal but Ill pay for excellent customer service at a local store that may or may not cost a few dollars more.Ryan sized and fitted my friend and I for packs that we were looking at for a trip to Nicaragua.Excellent customer service and knowledge about the products he showed us made our experience at the backpacker a good time and made me feel that this was money well spent.Thank you!
Great service. I needed a lot of help getting the correct fit in my hiking boots. They were most accommodating.
Just go to Masseys! This place has some cool equipment, but its overpriced. I wouldnt mind if I had good encounters with employees, but my experiences with the workers have been far from impressive. Theyre arrogant and condescending, and the chances that youll be in a bad mood after interacting with them are pretty high. Seriously, save yourself the trouble and go to Masseys or order your outdoor gear online!
Prices are way to high. They do have a nice selection and neat little gadgets. Fun store to visit but but not buy.
Super helpful staff, very cool store! Great selection. Would definitely recommend!
We love The Backpacker! We go on Backpacker Ski Trips every year and have a blast! Their staff is very knowledgeable, they match any price, and they have the biggest selection of The North Face and Patagonia in town. They also support local clubs and civic organizations that support the outdoors.
Nice and friendly staff, lots of diffrent backpacks to pick from like, north face, patagonia, camping backpacks, and more! they also sell water bottles, clothing, i’m pretty sure they also sell canoes/kayaks.
Its great, but you come in here and youre like, well now I want to go hiking but Im in Louisiana 😂 lol. Great store tho.
Hunter H. was so helpful! He has knowledge and expertise beyond his years ... go for both back-to-school and ski needs and ask for Hunter!Ashley GuglielmoBaton Rouge
I called the Baton Rouge store and they accurately confirmed that the headlight that I was looking for was in stock. They put it at the front counter and it took 5 minutes to walk in and purchase it. Great Experience
Always the Best service ! Great to do business with !
Great selection of products with some of the most knowledgeable staff in the area. Customer service that goes way beyond the initial sale. Every experience I have had has been first class from start to finish.
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. We really enjoyed our roof rack this weekend!
I was very surprised to find a store in Baton Rouge carrying a lot of the best brands in outdoor gear. They had a decent selection of Kuhl products, my primary reason for going in to check them out after searching for Kuhl retailers in the area. Impressive selection of brands and variety of gear. Very nice place.
This review is a long time coming. Ive been coming to this store for almost a decade. And Im sad to say I dont think Ill be coming back. It seems like in the past few months a lot has changed there. The employees dont seem as happy. At least during the week. There has been one of two days Ive gone in and seen everyone very chipper. But they usually seem fearful of management and do what they can to avoid being belittled. Ive seen it happen. Im not familiar with the the new manager but he is not kind or genuine to anyone especially not his employees. Sad to see a place of such joy wither like this.
Ive always loved the Backpacker. They always have what I need, and the staff is always very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!
Possibly the only place you can purchase climbing gear, and ski clothing, in Louisiana. A local store with staff that truly know, and use, the products they sell. Guaranteed if you go in this store for one item for an upcoming trip, youll walk out with a whole wish list and multiple plans for future adventures.
Love the Backpacker. Service is amazing and I always grab more than I came in for. Love the local feel
The selection of a big store, the service of a neighborhood joint. Welcome to the best of both worlds- the Backpacker. Im new to camping, like - NEVER tent camped in my life. I walked in here, having purchased a tent/sleeping bag/sleeping pad bundle over the phone, probably looking like a deer in the headlights. But man, from the moment I walked in, I knew I was in goods hands. Garrett and Hailey greeted me in such a friendly way and sent me upstairs to Tim, who spent SO much time with me! He took me through so many of the basics of what I need to do to successfully camp with my kids. And I could tell he really enjoyed it! I left with a wonderful list, and I feel like I can totally do this! Instilling confidence in someone is a gift, and Tim did a great job! Then, I went and checked out the sale section, and Ryan was so helpful, too! He really knew his Northface jackets and helped me find the perfect one for what I needed. Susie was another friendly face at checkout. I drove an hour+ from Mandeville to get here, and I will definitely be back. Places like this are (unfortunately) rare, and worth a drive. Wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Way to go, everyone!
Everyone was very friendly. They have an awesome room just with sale stuff. Great experience. I will be back.
Lot of big name cold weather gear offered here. Many staff members for such a small store. Love digging around in here
Great for everything necessary for outdoor fun...cold weather to hot deserts, camping to kayaking... good selection
Weve been doing business with the Backpacker for more than a decade. Weve bought at least ten kayaks from them and have always encountered helpful, eager and very nice employees. If they sold groceries and fishing rods Id buy everything there.
Excellent service when purchasing bike rack. Knowledgeable and trustworthy. Thanks.
Staff is always very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Always a positive shopping experience at Backpacker BR
Bamboo long sleeve shirts with thumbholes!
Good service and knowledgeable staff. They have good quality camping and hiking gear thats hard to find in other stores.
Excellent selection and best quality outdoors gear. The staff was excellent, extremely knowledgeable and personable.
Great selection and lots of sale items...very knowledgeable and helpful staff!
Friendly and very knowledgeable staff. Will be doing more business with them.
The staff was friendly and helpful when I entered the store. They helped me find a particular item I was looking for.Rhonda Robertson
It is great to have a place like this in baton rouge! thank you!
Excellent merchandise and staff. Just found this place, but I love it!
Great store, the staff are knowledgeable about there products. And great customer service.
Very knowledgeable about products, but no pressure.
Nice and knowledgeable staff. Always helpful and not pushy.
Poor mens shoes selection. Only 1 mens Teva and 3 mens Vibrams; greeted nicely at the door but then was ignored. Wont go here again to look for shoes.
Sales people are friendly and knowledgeable, and the store is organized and clean. Definitely recommend.
The Backpacker has a great selection of outdoor gear of all kinds, and friendly staff who know what theyre talking about. Worth the trip for the advice alone!
Always enjoy shopping at the backpacker! They price match and offer a discount for boyscouts!
Best place to get any travel/outdoors gear. Ask for Austin Hunt!
Everyone is very friendly and helpful! Everytime i go in the store everybody is very knowledgeable about their products and have great reccomendations
