JM Modern is absolutely fantastic. I started bjj about a year ago and have been super happy with the great professors and help from my fellow students in learning the sport. Absolutely would and have recommended this place to folks who want to learn self defense, get some exercise, or just straight up want to go toe to toe for friendly competition! 10/10, 5 stars!!

My wife and I travel for work, and are temporary residents at each location. We stay up to 6 months, but could leave as early as 8 weeks.Im always on the hunt for the best quality Jiu Jitsu gyms but more specifically, the ones I will learn the most from.My research starts with asking my current Professor or coaches which gym theyd prefer going to, ( most of the time they follow the lineage and aim from there). Then, I ask the BJJ community which gyms theyve been too or frequently go to in the area, and I find out who the instructors and google/ YouTube to see their accomplishments, matches, etc. After all is said and done, I take a free trial class to immerse myself in the action. If they dont treat me like a potential sale, GOLD STAR. I check the cleanliness of the gym, if its to my standards or better, GOLD STAR. Then, me being me, I ask a lot of questions my first day, and try to shake hands with the higher ranks and just be myself, and if majority of everyone is friendly and smiles, another GOLD STAR.At the point that all of these steps are taken in the order I listed them and I see no red flags, I will gladly spend whatever it takes to be a member at the gym!JM MODERN IS THAT GYM IN THE BATON ROUGE AREA! HIGHLY RECOMMEND, EVEN IF ITS JUST TO STOP IN FOR A CLASS OR TWO. DONT LEAVE LOUISIANA WITHOUT STOPPING HERE FIRST!

Great gym. Unfortunately, the owner, Josh Mancuso, has the sophistication of amoebas. Must be nice having a brain so exceptionally smooth it just rolls around in your head like a ball bearing.

Classes are great. The members and staff are outstanding. Unfortunately, the owner is very rude and lacks competency. I asked to negotiate his membership price, but he was insulted by the notion that paying 150$/month was above somebody’s means. If the prices were fair, maybe Josh wouldn’t have to hide it online and avoid telling people the fees over the phone. I tried to work the price down a bit by offering to help clean after practices and bring in lots of new members, but everything was an insult to this guy. I was nothing but cordial and respectful when I talked to him on the phone. Here’s a message for the owner, Josh, for when you read this: Everything in life is negotiable; perhaps you’d know this had you gone to college. We could have had an amicable agreement in which we both benefited; instead, you let your ego and unearned pride cloud your judgment and rationale. Too bad you lack the mental capacities and forethought to have understood that.

I travel a lot for work and cross train whenever and wherever I can. It’s so hard for me to find a gym that is comparable to my home gym. I might be biased, but I’ve been to a lot of BJJ gyms and I just can’t find the quality I get at my home gym… until I went to JM Modern! These people are the real deal! The instruction is tops, the atmosphere is professional and relaxing, and most importantly they are some of the most welcoming people you’ll ever meet! It’s so nice to be comfortable at a gym that’s not your own and who allows me to cross train and drop in. Their instructors take time to help me, even though I’m a visitor. Their upper belts are serious athletes but are always willing to share the wealth of knowledge when I ask them questions after a roll at the end of class. I really respect the owners for creating a space with authentic Jiu Jitsu culture. Hospitality, respect, humility, excellence, and porrada.If you aren’t training here and you’re in the BR area, what the heck are you doing with your life? Hahaha I just like them I guess. Lol

From the time I began training there, every person in that gym has been friendly, welcoming, and committed to helping everyone around them achieve whatever goals they have. The quality of instruction is absolutely unparalleled, and has as evidence the multiple World Champions that train here.Professor Josh Mancuso is absolutely driven to provide the highest level of quality to his students. He is constantly improving the gym and our BJJ community in ways that we don’t even know we need. I’ve been an EXTREMELY casual student since joining JM Modern Jiu Jitsu two years ago. Never once has anyone tried to push me in a direction that I didn’t want to go, but I was encouraged to believe in myself a little more. Competitors and casuals alike can be found on the mat at any given time and there’s no issue. I’d recommend this gym to anyone of any level and challenge you to find better instruction than you’d get here.

For 3 years my next door neighbor tried to get me to come train here with him. I finally caved in May, and all I can say is I wish I would have come sooner. Top-notch facilities, world-class coaches. There is competition-level training for those who really want to get after it, fundamental classes for beginners, and everything in between (including some wrestling, sambo, and judo classes). There is also a time slot for every schedule from 6am to evening classes (I usually hit the lunch classes). Ive only been training for a few months, but I can already tell Josh has worked hard to create a welcoming culture that goes well beyond jiu jitsu training. This place is a tight-knit community that encourages each other and celebrates one anothers success on and off the mat. I look forward to training here for many years to come.

Josh has some of the best grappling instruction in the state. All instructors are well versed competition tested in the style of grappling they teach. Some have even had the chance to test it in the streets with great results. Bjj, wrestling, judo, they got it. If youre looking for self-defense, competition or just looking to get in shape and have fun while doing it, this is the place.

I joined this gym to lose weight and learn a valuable skill in the process. Not only have I lost over 25 pounds in a short amount of time, but I have also gained new friends, valuable training partners and a greater sense of well being. I can’t speak highly enough about this gym and the people I have had the pleasure to meet.

JM Modern is a great gym. The mats are always clean, the instructors are excellent at what they do, and there are plenty of opportunities to gear your training in whatever direction you want. If you want to have a relaxed training session, they have classes geared towards that. If you want to have a hard training session, advanced classes and competition training will provide you that. Not a good gym, very small and the classes over way too packed to get a good roll in. When I tried to cancel my membership after I broke my foot, they didnt answer the phone for 3 weeks and still charged me for the month I couldnt go.

But was during my visit to the gym, that I spend an whole week teaching that I saw closely why JM Modern Jiu-Jitsu is a very successful school.From day one it seemed like I had been in there gym before. Its okay gym if you are a competitor, if hobbyist do not go here. you want Bayou Jiu Jitsu at least there one can get both. This gym is my way or the highway mentality. So go here ( JM modern ) and use the gym dont let the gym use you if you looking on competition only training.

Started going here in May 2019. Wasnt sure what I was getting myself into but tried it anyway.I was given a free Gi and three classes for $25. After the first class I was pretty sure I wanted to do this regularly so I signed up for the monthly subscription.It has helped me in ways that I would have never thought about in the past. I no longer have severe anxiety / depression. I have lost 24 lb since I started and continue to get in better shape. I feel more confident and it has taught me patience. I also get to meet a lot of people from many different backgrounds regularly.The instructors are top-notch. They work hard to make sure everybody progresses in their techniques and support everyone in their progression.I highly recommend this place!

I’ve been attending this academy as often as possible since I moved back home last year. The instructors, instruction, and environment, have exceeded my expectations in every way. From day one, everything is laid out plainly for you to see. Josh will talk to you about how the facility operates, any questions you have about billing (let’s face it, we all have that question), and how to proceed if you no longer wish to be enrolled. It’s all laid out in the gray folder you get full of information. The people I’ve met and call training partners make the culture of this academy the best I’ve ever been to. There’s no pressure to compete, but it is encouraged should you choose to. I don’t regret signing up, and I feel like the instruction I’m receiving and the skills I’m learning have made me ultimately a better person and better at my job, plus I’m having fun!

Josh is one of the best guys I know. He works diligently and strives to constantly be innovative with his gym. He runs the best quality program, with the most black belts, you can find in the state. If you ever find that you want to quit then he expects a 60 day notice. However, if youre unable to make payments but still want to be a member (like myself) then he is willing to work with you. Josh is very understanding and compassionate. He values members experiences more than their money.

Phenomenal program filled with amazing people. I doubt youll be able to find a gym like this anywhere in this part of the world, let alone the state. The professionalism Prof. Mancuso has is just as prevalent as the incredibly friendly and warm atmosphere the gym maintains, and its all held together by outstanding instruction. To my relief, the staff at JM Modern Jiu Jitsu made my experience a great one from the first step inside the door. Ive been attending classes regularly for over 9 months, and the quality of instruction, the friendly atmosphere, the mutual respect between everyone, and the hard work and dedication of the instructors are absolutely outstanding. I was hooked on Day 1, and despite the natural difficulties that come with training in such an art, my passion for the art has been nothing but stoked by everyone here. Joshs talent and dedication make their way all the way down to the smallest aspects of this school!EDIT: A year and a half after this writing this review, Im still 100% in agreement with it! Im even more impressed than before. If youre looking for a steady, easy pace at first to help you get in shape, or if youre looking for extreme conditioning for a hard competition, or if youre looking for a place for the whole family to have fun and train, this place is for you. I started bringing my 9 year old son about a year ago and he loves it. The instructors are awesome with the kids. During my sons first class the instructor explained how they were a team and family. Since then he has developed friendships that he will never forget. He looks forward to every class. I walked into JM Modern Jiu Jitsu as a total newbie to all martial arts and wrestling/grappling. The atmosphere is welcoming. The owner and instructors are very skilled at coaching and teaching and the more experienced members are always willing to help me learn more. Its really an atmosphere of everyone helping everyone else grow on multiple levels, not just the martial art itself. Ive learned how to better deal with fear and adversity in regular life as a result of Jiu Jitsu training. Josh (the business owner) goes above and beyond to make the experience good, always willing to help students learn more, even after the scheduled class time.

I have been training at JM Modern Jiu Jitsu since the beginning of last year. Josh and his instructors are awesome. Training here has given me the opportunity to learn not only Jiu Jitsu but also Judo, wrestling and some Sambo. My 5-year old Son started Jiu Jitsu at JM Modern Jiu Jitsu 6-months ago. Hes loving it!!! I think the overall vibe of the gym is full of positive energy, the instructors work very well one on one with the kids, & I see my little guy trying his heart out on the mat. On one hand JM is highly competative and on the other, the most humble welcoming friendly enviorment that anybody from any walk of life can walk right in and train with the best. The instruction here goes above and beyond. This is definitely one of the best places to train in the state, at the very least. The gym is clean, the instructors are top-notch and actively competing around the United States. The atmosphere is awesome, and the attitude and commitment of the instructors is reflected in the students who are so welcoming and constantly pushing those around them to reach their goals in BJJ.

Absolutely amazing place to train, more high level belts and coaches than any other gym in Louisiana and absolutely the MOST accessible hours for training. The class schedule is a plethera of options, not counting the open mats and Competition practices. Josh, his coaches, and hi level belts are always training and offering private lessons to make his gym even more accessible. You cant get better access to Mat time or a coaching staff than JM. Josh is an amazing person, Coach, leader, and friend to all that walk in his door. By far the humblest gym Ive ever been to.

As a first time student in BJJ I was very nervous coming to my first class. I must say I was beyond impressed & very welcomed by the coaches and members of the gym. Since the first day I started, everyone in the gym is always willing to help one another. The coaches instruct the class as a whole and walk around to further explain and instruct techniques. The past 15 weeks has been amazing & I have learned a ton. Joining JM Modern Jiu Jitsu was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

LEGIT.If youre in Baton Rouge and you want to learn jiu jitsu, this is where you need to be. Multiple black belt instructors, all of them accessible and approachable, and eager to help you improve.The facilities are great - ample mat space, clean, and with plenty of parking. Enough daily classes to fit anyones schedule. Modern: well laid out website where you can track your attendance, view all membership documents youve signed, and Josh (the owner) is in constant communication with his students through various social media and messaging platforms.I joined because I wanted to lose weight (I have), and I like playing rough (you will). The students there are without exception welcoming, enthusiastic and friendly, which is a testament to the culture Josh has created and nurtures.I came here for health and fitness and wound up with a bunch of new friends and teammates. Thats priceless.

Nice gym walking through the door, great mats and atmosphere, yet an air of elitism. Make no mistake, if you dont have daddys money, youre probably not going to be able to afford this gym. 25 dollars for a 3 day trial and 150 dollars per month just for the 2 day per week membership (as told to me), make this gym seemingly un-affordable, even for the already expensive art of BJJ. Clean gym, well air-conditioned and knowledgeable but seemingly high-brow and stiff owner, Josh, seems to enjoy flaunting his wealth and peddling his wares. Otherwise nice gym and good hours.

Josh Mancuso has done some great things for the BJJ community, and with this place, he has done it again. Incredible environment, great people, from beginner to advanced everyone was welcoming and wanting to work, and great knowledge being shared amongst the room. Whether you enjoy a competitive atmosphere or even looking for the more relaxed training, its all there. Josh even took time after training to work on a specific series that I have had questions on. I have also attended a seminar with Josh and the concepts and knowledge that the has to share is incredible. There is an enormous amount of grappling experience and expertise at this gym. The students and teachers are welcoming and friendly, and they will push you to your limits every class (thats a good thing!). You wont regret joining.

This is the premier establishment for learning Brazilian Jiujitsu and Kodokan Judo in the area. The facility is top notch and offers a multitude of classes throughout the week and multiple times per day. The instructors are welcoming and provide a wealth of experience to the students. Josh and his whole crew of instructors and students are awesome. I started a couple months ago and didnt even know how to tie the belt on my gi. Since then Ive learned a TON and have had a blast doing it. No one is judgmental to beginners but they definitely dont coddle you either! If youre in BR and want to learn Jiu Jitsu come here.
