There is no ringer for help no nurses or doctors not even the reception near by..No call bells or call lights, Nobody around..if something happened to me or one of the patients. How would you guys know.I understand things happen, but you cannot transport you’re patient? Cannot check on the patient it’s terrible .

I see a lot of negative reviews on here. I wanted to come and leave a positive one. I know things are hard for your staff right now. You’re stretched too thin and some patients coming to you for care aren’t happy. I don’t doubt every staff member/medical professional is doing what they can for them, even if patients don’t see it right now. For those that know what you sacrifice, I want you to know how extremely appreciated you are, and how vital you are. How lost so many people would be without you, and not just patients. And I wish it could be shown in a more validating way. Back in 2013 this medical center saved my son’s life when he came nearly three months early. I had been admitted to the University for nearly 6 weeks prior, the staff trying to keep my baby safe and give him the best chance when my water ruptured early. After he was born, he stayed from November to February before being transferred to Mt. Washington. Every doctor, nurse, respiratory therapist, and other medical personal, did everything they can for both him and I. Life saving treatment for him, and life saving words, guidance, and kindness for me. In 2009 my Great Grandfather’s heart failed him while he was receiving treatment as while inpatient. He was a vibrant man in life, and in the hospital this was recognized by the staff. They didn’t just treat him like an old man (88) clinging to life. They treated him with dignity before his heart failed, joking with him, one nurse going out of her way to find him the current Sun paper when I couldn’t be there. Made sure he was shaved because he didn’t like looking scruffy and complained about it jokingly. And treated him with dignity when his time came. And was attentive to his comfort. Everything everyone does in that hospital is so appreciated by those that truly see you. I hope everyone stays as safe as they are able, both physically, and mentally. You don’t deserve any unkindness you are getting right now. Thank you all for everything that you do. Below is a pic of my grandfather, years before he passed, at my oldest son’s first birthday. The other pic, is my son you all saved, and is now 7, on his first day back to school this year. Thank you so much for them. ❤️

Worst hospital in the area. Nurses tend to brush you off. I spoke with the ER Department about one of the surgeons behaviors and she said she would take care of it. Nurses please be mindful of how you treat your patients. If you actually listen you may find out a thing or 2. Sometimes it’s not what you say to the individual, but the delivery plays a big part. Be mindful of how you talk to people in general. I’ve been given all kinds of medication for pain relieving, however only 2 of them actually work but for a very short period of time. I even went as far as to tell them that the types of diagnosis I have it specifically states widespread constant chronic pain. They totally ignored that part because if they actually knew that they would know my tolerance for pain even if I hadn’t told them it’s part of proper protocol to look for answers. I stopped coming here because of things like this but unfortunately I had to go somewhere due to the freak accident and the injury I endured behind it. Please just find another hospital. Save yourself the pain and a headache! Also a second opinion doesn’t hurt anyone. I just wish I looked at the reviews of other people experiencing before I had to cross paths.

She fix the issue on the spot, she talked to me and found out what I eat and accommodated my food needs. Thank you University of Maryland for having such and awesome staff 😀

Took my father to the ER here because of an unignorable stomach issue. He waited since 1pm and by 9pm wasn’t seen. He only got his blood drawn but nothing else. Later, he was told that incoming patients with shock trauma take priority and knock everyone down the waiting list. I don’t know how much of this is due to COVID, But it’s easily the worst hospital we’ve been to. Howard county general is better.

My sister, a recently diagnosed ALL pt found herself in the ER for an infection 5 days after she was discharged from UMMC. The attending here paged her oncologist during normal business hrs twice and no return call was made. I called myself at 6:44 pm and spoke to a gentleman who left a message for the Oncologist. My complaint is not geared toward that oncologist, it is towards RENE the “supervisor” in the pt assistance hotline. I called at 8:10 pm asking if the onclogist spoke to the attending as we are still in the ER after 10 hrs. I explained that the attending called twice and I specifically spoke to a gentleman who had the oncologist paged. She said there was no page made. By this point she seemed irritated. I told her it was to Dr. Law. She then said, “ well thats why she is not here”! I explained that no one told me that and to ck her records It documentation of any calls were made, she became a little loud and irritated with me and not helpful at all. I asked well who should I speak to and rather than explaining what I should do, she said I could not page the oncologist myself that it had to be the Physician herself. I said ok, let me get her. She waited for less than 2 min and then hung up on me!! I hope UMMC records their calls so they can see how a “supervisor” performs her job. She would also not disclose her last name or her managers name and just told me to call the office if I had a complaint. There is definitely a disconnect between the office and the after hrs pt assistance as we never received a call back and no records kept that the Dr. was paged. Again not geared toward the oncologist as they may have never received all 3 calls that were made to speak to them.

The doctors killed my family member due to a surgery accident and other negligence. They were mostly medical students and low experience workers. That is really awful in my real experience. My malpractice lawyer told me that it is impossible to sue the doctor and the hospital for any reason. As love ones we trust the staff to care fairly and not get mad or frustrated with a patient. This passive abuse must end. This is the medical field, what should be the most trusted and caring field. The hospital need to check the staff professionalism and expertise. I refuse to take anyone to this emergency room. My aunt has been struggling with muscle failure among many other issues. I walked in around 9:45 pm. The first nurse was rude just after asking for a wheelchair because she can not walk on her own. she asked how does she get around at home? After letting her know she has been bed ridden and i carry her otherwise. She asked me to pull my car to the front so they can help me get her in. She got done with her vitals and ecgs around 12. We were sat back in the main waiting room. After 2 am a older man was called in and could barely walk. My aunt asked the same nurse to get him a wheelchair because he was stumbling. Evem a guard said he needs a wheelchair. After the gentlemen is in the back the same nurse moves my aunt to a secondary waiting room. Even tho the only ppl in the waiting room all showed up after us they were getting dis-charged. So i asked when was my aunt going ro be called. THE SAME NURSE says there are plenty ppl infront of her not including if emt bring someone in. I would not recommend this hospital to anyone!

I came to University of Maryland emergency room in Baltimore. It took 12 hours after checking my vitals to be seen. There were several people in the lobby with me and they to experienced very long waits. I understand emergency rooms have their procedures and policies but, they all should include customer service. ThIs is a top notch medical facility, but they really need to work in customer service. When coming in for service you first get screen by security staff and a police presence. I saw the different treatment to folks that was unacceptable. Then you checkin at the front counter. The women at the desk were pleasant. The first nurse that took my vitals was pleasant and then after that it went downhill until I saw the nurses and doctors in the back. The nurse in charge of the lobby was horrible. She didn’t keep anyone informed and was rude. When customers asked questions she answered flat and with vigor. She even told a man that asked what the wait time was like and where he might be on the list “look around, everyone is here for something, you will be called when your called”. The man appeared to be in severe pain. His wife called 911 and transported him to Annapolis. The police officers assigned to the lobby did nothing. Several folks came in and sat in the lobby and shot up illegal drugs and then left. If the hospital is a designated safe space for that then I suggest having a separate designated area. Sitting in the lobby for 12 hours I also observed no COVID safety procedures being followed. Several people came through security without a mask and the lobby remained crowded and distance between people were not adhered. The trash was picked up once and the bathrooms were never cleaned. The seats in the lobby never were wiped down or sanitized the entire time I was there. The bathrooms were worse than potty john’s. There is a charge station but, no type of sanitation to wipe down or clean your hands afterwards. Everyone admitted to the back takes a COVID test, but only the patient not their escorts, which seemed a little unsafe. I would suggest all be tested or only admit patients in the back. Prior to the test I was seen by a couple of doctors who then ordered a COVID test. My symptoms were known the entire time I sat in the lobby with others for 12 hours. This means others that sat with me could have had COVID and I never would have known. I at first gave a one star rating but, to be fair I changed because the service I received once I was in the back was good. The nurses work extremely hard in the back. They kept me informed and comfortable.

Came here for a doctors appointment. It was like going through an airport. I had to get pat down and open my purse for a stranger security guard to go through. Speaking of this security guard, I told her I was there for a doctors appointment. After she was finished invading my space and privacy, I asked her where the elevators were and mentioned that my appointment was on the 5th floor. This security guard said with an attitude I know where it is! and then proceeded to give me directions. I mention this, because I never gave her my name and she did not know which department my appointment was for... so I thought it was hilarious that she claimed to know where I was going, when she clearly didnt. Her attitude was unnecessary. I dont know whats with security guards and bad attitudes, but I can only assume she was angry that she never amounted to the real cop status? Anyways, everyone else here was great! The Hospital isnt in the best area, but hey... thats Bmore! If you have a bad experience with one person, dont assume everyone here is the same. The doctors, nurses and staff have really great sense of humor and personalities. I sacrificed three stars for the weird security protocal... although I appreciate the safety measures, I couldnt help but wonder why it was even needed. Im sure it is there there safety reasons, but a hospital that needs these steps for safety made me feel very uneasy and on edge. I also deducted stars due to the face of this hospital (by face, I mean the first person that people encounter when entering the building) was horrid and needed to mind her attitude problem or keep it in check at the very least.

They stuck a needle in her arm for an IV to get some fluids going and never even brought out a bag. She had to take the needle out herself, went home and called an ambulance at 3am because she was in so much pain. The paramedics brought her to Union memorial where she was finally able to get some fluids and a prescription to deal with her issue. Absolutely do not go to UMD. Absolutely one of the worst nursing staffs Iv ever had at the university ER. I’m in the ER as I type this review because I drove over 2 hours from my house to come here thinking I’d be getting great care. In the past it has been but yesterday 4/2/2021 the staff that was in charge of me was terrible. First I waited 3 hours to be seen in the ER, while I had a 100 degree temp and terrible back pain, a white blood cell count of 23.4 as I came here. I was never given fluids when i finally got back into a room, never was given nausea medicine or anything for my extremely bad back pain. They got my blood for testing around 9.30 10 pm and at 3.25 am I was finally told my results. I had to beg for a bag of fluid and the nurse asked me why I needed 1. Well I have a illiostomy because of my Ulcerative colitis where Iv had surgery 2 times prior and I need hydration or my body hurts. Finally was given a bag of fluids many hours later. It’s 3.30 am and Iv been here since 7 finally was seen at 9.45 and still have not had a CT scan to see where a possible infection could be. To get a chest X-ray took 5 hours to get that. No communication about my results or to even check on me to see if I was okay. They all just sit behind the desk on thier phones, I went 2 times to empty my illiostomy bag and both times I saw ER worker sitting down on thier phones. I thought the VA was bad but this visit was terrible. Still in the ER room 13. 8 and a half hours later and still not even told if I’m going to be admitted or not. Y’all gotta do better

I found out on my own that something showed on the scan that needs to be taken care of. I called the office to voice my concern. I have yet to receive a call back. The scan was done several weeks ago.

My father had surgery today and we were here before 5:00 am but the valet parking attendant came out to assist me in parking my car. From there it was smooth sailing, the registration was about a 15 minute wait not bad at all since the room was full of patients that had to register. We went up to the visitors lounge and waiting for them to call my dad. All the nurses, the anesthesiologist, his doctor were so nice to me and really cared about my dad. I never waited and they were very attentive. The food was delicious and I enjoyed it pricey and all because I was there all day long and they did not give me a problem about staying overnight. They provided linens for me and made me feel comfortable. As I read the reviews, I was shocked and my experience was totally different. I guess there is always room for improvement and everyone/everything is always works in progress. The people that work at this hospital give there all and try to be excellent all the time but they are also human. I am just grateful for the care and wonderful bedside matter that you do not always get in Jersey.

I gave this establishment four stars because overworld my mom stays here for her medical situation they are great staff but the communication is so messed up in the PCU unit it’s horrible. I’ve met with social workers and I had a meeting but they don’t communicate with the information desk about the meetings so now I am wasting my time in the waiting area where I should not be so yes this is a good hospital but communication really sucks they should work on that.

This hospital is world class in care. I had two of my children here and they saved theirs and my life. When I needed surgery they gave me excellent care. Like most hospitals there is room for improvement, but I would choose university of Maryland every time. My boys are now 25 and 32. Thank you!!!!

My mother was in the hospital for an emergency. Doctors and nurses were fine. They issued her a walker for no reason except profit. She has two already. They do not control parking out front make extremely difficult to pickup patients. I saw a car park in front of the front door for hours and nothing was done. It was one of 5 parked in the tow away zone. Valet uses the fire zone to park cars. The head of security/safety should fired for this breach in security and safety.

We to the er on friday. Waited about 2 hours before being seen. Once I got to the back the doctors immediately started the dignoses. MRI and Exrays were given. They even took the time to call my doctors for infomrmation. Then I was sent on the neurology unit for observation. Which was there the nurses took care of me as if I was the only patient on the unit. Doctors came all throughout the day, explaining the different symptoms to me. I laughed with the nurses and even the hospkeeper.. it was a awesome experience for.me.They get a 5star..

I was pleased with car rendered to my father until today. I felt that there was an issue that could have been resolved but they chose not to exert the extra effort. The staff did not care about getting the issue resolved and told me it had to wait until the next day. There were so many things that could have been done differently. There was a lack of communication, incompetence, lack of empathy and compassion from the information desk, security department, the nursing staff on the Cardiac Step Down Unit on the sixth floor. At this point I felt like my dad and his family were treated like numbers and not humans dealing with a sensitive matter. It didn’t matter to them because it wasn’t their family member.

Worst hospital I have ever been to in my life. If You actually want to die this the place to come to. I wish I could give a 0 star rating. Every aspect of this hospital from the security to the surgeons is terrible nobody does their jobs. They do not update you on anything your left in the dark for days the social worker Sarah is non existent she shouldn’t work at any hospital in the country. Our loved one woke up from heart surgery and was awake for several hrs before another emergency surgery had to be performed. All the family should have been contacted when she woke up that’s what the staff was instructed to do. They never contacted us. This hospital took away our chance to say goodbye and see her awake one last time. This is completely unacceptable! Nobody was held responsible for this HUGE error. I wouldn’t come here to even get a flu shot.

I have had 5 surgeries from this hospital and have stayed 3-7 days after each one. I live almost 3 hours from there and I would not go anywhere else. They have always made me feel very comfortable and safe. The nurses and physicians have always been professional and very pleasant. I am going in 3 days to have another surgery and I wont go anywhere else. The entire stay is definitely worth the drive. I highly recommend this hospital especially the orthopedic surgeon Dr Ludwig and all of his staff as well as the nurses on the surgical, recovery and orthopedic teams.

I give the doctors and nurses a 5 star rating. The morning attendant at their Healing Garden waiting area for family members of those in surgery a minus 5 stars. The whole process in which they handle those waiting on word for their precious loved ones undergoing surgery is HORRIBLE. They only give you updates every 2 hours on the hour (asking in advance for a 30 minute grace period). If you ask this woman any earlier than that you get an attitude. My loved one was having what was supposed to be a 4 hour surgery that ended up lasting 8 and all i got every 2 hours was hes still in surgery and boom on to the next person. I think with the money this hospital makes they could afford to put in computerized screens that would update you faster and more efficiently than this woman! The gentleman in the evening in the same area was wonderful however. He showed compassion and was never to busy to inquire about your loved one. He was respectful, caring, and actually told us that we could come to him at anytime and he would find out how our loved one(s) were. That that was his job. Maybe since most of the surgeries are done during the day time you all should move him to that shift. So warning, if you or a loved one is going there for surgery, especially in the day time be prepared to find out very little about what is going on.On the other hand once you leave this waiting area the staff was very friendly and helpful. They made my loved one feel as though he was the only patient. so KUDOS to the nurses, aids and docs.but Please rethink the way you handle loved ones in this healing garden area.

Mostly good doctors and professionals.Pharmacy staff is consistently slow, making people wait on discharge additional hours - perhaps this is used to illegally boost client billing? Can’t leave until prescriptions are filled? Wouldn’t surprise me in the least.Want a hospital with cheap parking? This isn’t it. The cafeteria seems reasonable for prices and selection. The other foos shops seem nice. However, this being said, the food served was awful. Never once did they ask about preference of the patient, and most of the time the patient did not like the food. The nutrition of the food was also abysmal. How to recover from a viral infection without nutritious food?

After 3 different ER in Baltimore, my conclusion is system that doesn’t work. They just want our money, we’re a number on ER. But yes, prepare yourself for long 9 hours waiting. I went first to primary care, just to avoid long waits, they transfer me to ER, so I thought could be fast... 🤦🏻‍♂️

Sky high blood pressure, alarmingly abnormal EKG, blood drawn, urine-tested, chest x-rayed. Put in a gown and a wheelchair, parked back out in the waiting room - for FIVE hours now, waiting for an ER room to open? This is how a cardiac event is treated here? They should not have an ER at this hospital. I was the first one here this morning and have yet to see anyone treated for anything. I hope I dont go into cardiac arrest. I will surely die.

My daughter was taken by ambulance to the ER because she had a seizure and fell and hurt her back and head. First they told the paramedics that they wouldnt treat her. Then after the paramedic called a supervisor the doctors decided to treat her. They made her feel so bad about coming in. The x rays came back ok...nothing broken but they tried telling her that her seizures were fake. She even had a small seizure while she was there...All in all..they did their best to make her feel bad. They did nothing to help her. I used to think that the hospital was a good hospital...but not anymore.

On the one hand, many, even most of the doctors are excellent. Some are world-renowned. Maryland is excellent in certain specialties. Nurses and other health professionals are also very good. But administrative staff usually stink. You find a competent one every so often, but this exceptional person is probably swamped doing the work of 10 of the surly, rude, incompetent folks who are the norm. As well, the bureaucracy of the place is a nightmare. Could use a thorough process re-engineering.For inpatients, the food is horrible. Im pretty sure someones neer-do-well nephew got the contract and is laughing all the way to the bank as his company prepares inedible meals for people who are supposed to be healing.Id give a 4 1/2 or 5 to the doctors, a 3.5 for nursing and other health professional staff, a 0.5 for administrative staff, and a negative number for the food.

I am writing the review on the behave of my wife. She passed away in UMMC recently. Most of the doctors and nurses are very professional and doing their jobs. I will say most of nurses are very knowledgeable and helpful. But the hospital doesnt welcome patients family members to stay over night. They make patient family feel uncomfortable to stay over night. You can not lie down to take a rest at all. Patients family members have to run between hospital and hotel. It is bad to those patients who are in critical conditions. The second issue I want to complaint is the hospital mishandling insurance claim. My insurance processed their claim on 4/10/2019 and rejected to pay with the reason of no itemized invoices. I received a claim filed through administration of will from the debt collector hired by University for the amount during my wife hospital stay on 6/6/2019. University of Maryland spent two months to chase my wife estate. My insurance did not receive any documents they need to process the insurance claim. I am going to file a complaint through Maryland State Attorney to investigate. University of Maryland Medical Center is in the network of my insurance and not suppose to send a bill to me. They suppose to send the documents to insurance to process but it did not happen as the time I wrote this complaint. I called the customer service for the past two days. None of them are helpful and giving me an answer. Finally my insurance representative whose name is Janet helped me to talk to them to make sure they did not violate the agreement with insurance . They should not bill to patients until settle down of insurance claim. All I need to know is someone is sending the documents for insurance to process the claims. Instead they kept sending me back and forth for no answer. I called administration of will and they told me a claim is a bill. Clearly, University of Maryland Medical Center violate the agreement with my insurance. Confirmed with the representatives of my insurance. Prepare the complaint to Maryland State Attorney.
