We spent about 5 hours here on a busy Saturday over a holiday weekend. My daughter wanted to adopt an older cat to be a buddy to her cat at home who use to live with 2 other cats and is now an only cat. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They have a system where you sign up on a list to either see a dog(s) or a cat(s), it is done very efficiently and no one had to wait very long to meet the animal they were interested in adopting. We met probably all but a couple of the adult cats and found that every single one of them were cat reactive or had feline leukemia and needed to be an only cat or various other reasons. Bottom line...no adult cats would work. So we turned to all kitties under the age of 1. We ended up finding one that looks almost identical to the brown tabby my daughter has at home! She was absolutely perfect because she didnt get all freaked out when an older, bigger cat came marching up to see what she was all about! LoL. The adoption process itself took the longest (this couldve been because my daughters friend was adopting a dog that day, too. Dottie...a goofy,, 5 year old black lab mix. What an absolute sweetheart she turned out to be!This shelter could seriously use an overhaul/remodel, and a good cleaning. They are very short-handed having only 1 volunteer there to feed, water, and walk all of those dogs! She was probably in her late 60s, very nice, but a bit overwhelmed. They could use about a half dozen more voIunteers! (But they still managed to help people in a timely manner). And donations! Blankets, toys, cat litter, treats, pillows, leashes, collars, feeding bowls, dog/cat food, anything and everything related to cats and dogs would be put to good use.

It was a bit hard to navigate on the website ( its kind of limited) but it gave me the form I needed to adopt, and once I got there it was quick and easy. The staff were nice and were even able to give her, her last shots before I took her. Their communication/response was really good, and I got all her forms and medical history in a folder with samples of her cat food and litter! Will def be there again to interact with the other cats.

Trying to adopt through the adoption center was a horrible experience that I would’ve loved to be a good one. I was the first one in line; as soon as the doors opened, I went up to the lady that opened the door and showed an animal on my phone and asked to see and hold the animal as I’m ready to adopt. Without looking at me, she brushed me off and said I could join the others over there. I walked over there patiently waiting, and another couple went up to the same lady and asked about the same animal. Without hesitation, she said, sure, let’s get that adoption going. I went up to her and said, hey! Did I ask about him first? And she said sorry, but they’re going to be first in line now for this animal because they’re closer to his cage?? Horrible service from Austin humane society and will never be going back. Worst customer service and rude workers.

This is the third location in Austin I had visited in an attempt to find a young cat. I have lots of experience and resources and we’re looking to give a good home to an animal. They do not allow visitors without an appointment and guided me to send a full application via email after I let them know I was already there.I understand that with Covid things are difficult but may people are vaccinated now including myself. They should make it much easier to connect people who want to adopt a pet.Update: I went to Tomlinson’s and pickedup Beanibus McBean, who is now spoiled rotten. Much better experience than the shelter, sadly.

I was told that I could bring some stray kittens from under my porch to Austin Humane Society to find homes. They have been hunted by coyotes since I live in the country so I was desperate to find them a safe place to stay. One of the kittens had a limp as he probably escaped the coyote and needed aid which I thought that Austin Humane Society could provide. I drove an hour to the facility and was told that they could not accept the kittens as they had ringworm, they would not even help the kitten with the limp who was the only one without ringworm! After that, they sent me to a kill-shelter with my kittens! Awful facility, do not want to help animals at all.

We got our dog Boomer from the Austin Humane Society and he was in really bad shape when we first picked him up. He was starved, matted, and scarred physically and mentally, but the Humane Society treated him with love and care, and we adopted him a few days later! Even better, and more importantly, the Austin Humane Society is a No-Kill Shelter. That matters a lot. We love Boomer more than life itself, and I dont know what I would do without him. Thank you Austin Humane Society, youre the best animal shelter ever.

My family and I love our fur baby. The adoption process is well done. Keep in mind when you adopt. It takes a while for the animal to get used to the new family and surroundings. Give him/her a little space and the time it needs and the family will enjoy your new pet and visa-versa. It takes commitment.

Great place to find a new furry family member! Gets busy on the weekends so I recommend going during the week instead. They take in a ton of animals from shelters across Texas and neighboring states. You will need to fill out some initial forms before you can play with the animals outside of their cages.

We adopted our guy about six months ago from the Austin Humane Society. They were extremely timely in their responses and the process took about a day. When our older German Shepherd initially showed aggression to the new puppy—even to the point where we were considering returning the puppy for its safety—they were responsive and helpful with their advice. This guy is such an amazing part of our family, loves our 3 children, and is now a perfect playmate for our older dog that I couldn’t imagine life before him!

When I was first interested in adopting, they were super quick to respond - but as soon as he was with us, I found it hard to get a response. Keep in mind we did the 1 week trial with the new COVID precautions, so keeping in touch online is important for this. His file claimed he was potty trained, but he’s peed inside our house multiple times now, despite multiple daily walks and constant access to the yard. He also seems to have issues with his vision, but they told me it was now my responsibility to get it looked it. I’m glad we have our new dog, but I will not be adopting with them again.

Sadly, They dont return voicemails or emails when you adopt an animal and they have issues. I got my adorable cat here! When we adopted him they said she had a completely clean bill of health. When we got him home, he was very sick. Almost died. Obviously had many issues they did not tell us about including parasites. Which we had to treat our dog for too. After alot of vet bills, our family contracting ringworm, and many trips to the doctor. Orbit is finally well after 3 months. We are so grateful we got to save this sweet animal!! We were just disappointed that nobody even cared enough to call back to check on him. He is the best cat ever! We love him.

I was first pointed to Austin Humane when I rescued a super friendly unfixed male cat that was FIV+. They were the only rescue nearby at the time who would take him.Years later, I brought a third stray cat to them. Due to Covid, the hand-off happened outside, but it was otherwise the same smooth experience. They examine the cat, and then tell you if theyll take the cat. So far, all three of my attempts have been successes.Ive watched the website for the pictures and bios they put up, and the cats seem to get adopted quickly. The shelter itself is quite nice, and the staff seem to really love animals. Recently adopted a new puppy from this center and they are so kind and caring people. They really care and were helpful throughout the adoption. No loops to jump through to adopt an animal through them, they just want to give these animals a loving home. After we adopted our puppy they found out later one of his littermates had tested positive for Parvo, they immediately informed us and what precautions we should take. We took him to our vet once we heard the news because he was showing signs of being lethargic and unfortunately he had tested positive too. The Humane Center offered free treatment at their center to help treat him while he had Parvo. Absolutely amazing center and people. We treated him through our vet, but they asked for updates and we kept them informed. Our puppy fully recovered and is a happy, healthy puppy.

I can’t say enough AMAZING things about Austin Humane Society. 5 months ago, I adopted my kitty. I was told she is healthy and even my own vet told me she seems perfectly healthy. However after she got spay surgery - she had insane infections going on. It was very heart breaking and upsetting. However, AHS staff were SO kind, compassionate and reimbursed all the cost of the ER visits I had to make with my kitty and took her back in to get her the BEST medical attention (including having her see a specialist!).AHS and I mutually decided that it was best for her to be rehomed so she can continuously get the BEST medical condition and be with a family who will be in Austin for the foreseeable future as I am moving out of Austin in the next few months. I am still heartbroken and grieving hard as I said bye to my kitty - but I know AHS is committed to take care of her as they already did. All the staff are truly amazing. AHS, thank you so much. I know she is in good hands.

Very nice staff. I’m just visiting the area and found a dog loose. After a google search I brought him here. They have a very organized, effective way of handling lost/stray animals. I filled out a form, waited a bit and was offered to wait inside when another dog tried to attack the dog we found. (No one was hurt but my sister was a little flustered and the staff saw that and let us come in a room) Them the staff entered the info they needed and gave me info on how to check his status once I left the dog there. They called me back within the hour to let me know that the owner was coming to pick up. Great experience.
