Ill start off by saying the gym itself is good and the few boxing lessons I took were very engaging. My problem is with management and their policies. My mother lives with me and has Parkinsons that can flare up throughout the year, unfortunately her condition got worse a few weeks after I signed up and Ive had to spend much more time looking after her. When I signed up, the rep told me I could freeze my account if I suffered a physical injury or was moving. I hoped this would extend to people in my situation who act as caregivers. Come to find out, this is not correct, and I was asked to pay $10 a month to freeze my account even though it was paid in full.Kylie later explained to me that freezing was not allowed on my account because it was on promotion, and she was actually making an exception for me with the $10 monthly offer. Freezes can happen without cost if I suffered an injury at the gym, but God forbid if any life events happen to you outside the gym that prevent you from attending, because theyll ask for more money to do the common sense thing, or theyll shrug their shoulders and tell you to deal with it.I called Kylie to talk through my concerns, and it was the most unprofessional experience Ive had in fitness. She consistently cut me off, and decided to hang up on me a minute into the phone call. I expected to at least have a conversation like adults, but it doesnt seem like she can handle disagreements. This gym needs better policies, it needs better management, and it needs to ensure all reps are on the same page when discussing memberships.
There arent enough good things i could say about this gym. Ive been training BJJ for almost 9 months now, and i feel the time Ive put in is invaluable. The coaches and teammates have made me feel so welcomed and comfortable from my very first class. All of the coaches take their time and make sure EVERYONE understands whats being taught, and all of my teammates couldnt be more encouraging. I feel like Ive gained a second family, and i couldnt imagine training anywhere else 👍🏻
Started boxing here to train for self protection and I absolutely love it. Ernesto is an awesome coach and has even stayed after hours to help me when i first started.
Fantastic gym, knowledgeable instructors. Not a typical fitness gym. Focused on Boxing and BJJ
False/Misleading advertising on their website. To those who are unaware, when the website says “Claim your trial now” they mean “Pay $25 for your 1st class/the start of your membership”You aren’t “claiming” anything. You are paying for it.Just say $25 for 1st class and if you sign up for a membership, that $25 is taken off.Be transparent to potential customers instead of being deceptive.Edit/response:Correct- your website doesn’t use the word “free” BUT it also doesn’t say “Claim your $25 1st time trial” either.“Claim” in the context of commerce is associated with “free”.You don’t “claim” a purchase. You “buy” it.I’ll remove this review if you update your website stating it’s $25. Not joking btw ;)Until then, I think the public/potential customers have the right to know what I was not privy to.
I love this place! Great gym great teachers and family 👪I recommend all the way!
Amazing facilities, remarkable coaching and even better people! When becoming a member at John’s they will welcome you in like family. They are very patient and phenomenal at coaching people new to martial arts. This place can be an awesome opportunity for people new to Austin to meet and make friends with some high quality individuals. Also this is a true MMA gym with very high level coaching in BJJ/grappling as well as striking. Very common to be on the mat with multiple black belts in a class who are experts at their craft and can help you improve yours, while in the striking classes you get precise coaching on your technique and aren’t just hitting a bag the whole class. 5 stars, 10/10 review. Don’t hesitate and stop by and give them a try! 👊
Ive only done four boxing classes (Counting the trial class) so far but this place is awesome. The people are respectful. The coaches exude knowledge. Every time I leave I am a better fighter with better technique and conditioning who is more capable of taking a hit to the face, and I know it because I just got done proving it again.
This gym welcomes you in with welcome arms no matter how much or little experience you have. Great communication, so you know exactly what’s going on at all times. Coaches are excellent and patient.
Kylie and the front desk staff are great and make me feel welcome so Im glad to be a member. Coach Ernesto is the absolute best! I first met him in March when he came to my school to teach a seminar, now I have the privilege to learn from him on a regular basis here at Johns gym.
I tried out several other boxing gyms before coming here, and none could compare. The instructors genuinely care about seeing you progress in both skill and fitness level. Very friendly learning environment perfect for beginners, experienced boxers, and everyone in between.
From day one of just signing up everyone at John’s gym has been really friendly. After signing up I got tons of messages welcoming me to the team. I’ve trained at several gyms for Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai and I can tell you their instructors know what they are talking about. There has been no harshness and instruction is detail oriented. I’m very glad with my choice to join here and I look forward to growing with the team.
My 17 year old son joined Johns Gym 3 weeks ago. I have to say, that from the moment we first visited to now, I feel very confident in the instructors and staff at Johns Gym . My son is a beginner and they eliminated any insecurities he and I had that usually comes along with joining a gym. My son is excited to go and he learns something new to improve his skills everyday that he is able to go. I highly recommend Johns Gym at every level.
Great facility, awesome instructors & coaches!
I have been a part of the boxing and Muay Thai for a couple of weeks now, and I absolutely love it. Great coaching team here!
Just started, and completely hooked. The staff is excellent. The gym is first class. You will not regret signing up. Its rewarding and challenging and more real than most things in life.
I’ve been training at Johns gym for almost 3 years now and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. I love coming and training Muay Thai here. Coach Branden is great and has really invested in teaching me everything he can. Also love being able to use the gym for extra workouts between classes. Highly recommend checking out any of the classes, especially Muay Thai!
My son and I love this gym! We have been members since 2018 and everyone is very polite and enjoyable to be around. The coaches are all very knowledgeable and patient.
Awesome gym. Had nothing but positive experiences with the community, the training, and the gym itself since being here. New to mma (I do bjj), and loving every minute of it... being able to defend yourself is great for literally anyone. And you’ll get in shape. Weight set too which is huge for me. Good bargain
Great inviting atmosphere, with awesome coaches who take their time to make sure you are progressing and appropriately preforming the drills. If you are looking for a quality professional gym, look no further!!!
John’s Gym welcomed me with open arms from the staff to other members, Very welcoming and accepting to new people starting MMA. Coaches are very willing to help out when you have questions.
Came because I wanted to try a new workout and stayed because of the sense of community, strong work ethic, and exhilaration I get at every class. It’s definitely intimidating as a female beginner, but I’ve grown to love this place. If you give John’s Gym a chance, one month later, you’ll be feeling exactly what I’m feeling. 😊
Highly recommend this gym. The coaching staff is great and experienced. From novice to expert, young or old, these guys know how to work with you to help you develop.
Johns Gym is a great place to go and learn martial arts or to just get a great cardio workout. If you want to learn how to defend yourself from people who may mean you harm, this gym can definitely help you accomplish that goal. I have been training there for years and I have learned so much about how to handle a fight and I have gotten way tougher and stronger. Its night and day from when I started until now. I encourage you to give this gym a try if you have similar goals.
Awesome place, had a great time
I started at John’s Gym a little over a year ago when I was searching for a Muay Thai class and I’m so glad to have tried this gym first. Great atmosphere and amazing coaches!
This gym has given me more then experience it has given me friends and a place to hang out and teach you real life experiences. This is definitely the place to learn to fight
If you never want to have to join another gym again, this is it. It is such a fresh air to finally find a gym that is locally owned with the owners in the gym every day and hold you accountable to workouts. I have spent the last 20 years before Johns gym joining and cancelling gym memberships and finally found something i have used for three years now. I have used Jas for training and been to several classes before and after Covid and the staff has done great job of keeping me motivated, safe and in a clean environment before and after Covid. The best part is that its not your normal gym with members coming and going(with their germs) and sales people just trying to get your credit card. If you are looking for some life changing workout environments, this is the place. If you just want a cheap membership and a fad type gym with some new type of 15 minute workout, you need to keep driving!!!
This is a great experience getting back into things coaches are great with helping and giving some one on one while in class to help you succeed
I have been at Johns gym now for about 4 months. John and the front office staff are amazing. They were super flexible to my specific situation and they always greet you with a smile. The coaching staff is great as well as the people who train there. Everyone is so helpful and the utilization of technology to keep everyone informed and in the loop is simple but super effective. My experience here has been nothing but positive. Thank you John, Im having a blast training with you guys!!! - David Q.
Couldn’t ask for a better environment! The classes and instructors are incredible and you never feel uncomfortable no matter how inexperienced you are. 10 stars!
I came in as a newcomer and was treated with warmth and professionalism. Kylie and each trainer were friendly and informative. I tried BJJ, Muy Thai and Boxing, and experienced consistently strong workouts with excellent tips for growth in the off hours. The pricing is very fair considering the quality and skill of the coaches. The trainers will work to accommodate your goals and constraints. I would recommend to anyone of any age.
Okay, did not want to do this but we are out of options. There is not a possibility of negative stars so unfortunately it has to be 1 star. We decided to try out Jiu Jitsu for my son offered here. Few facts:- 1) They will work very hard to get your business. 2) We have observed differentiations here which surprises us. 3) To sum it up in few words, they do not know how or do not take time to teach kids how to tie a belt. 4) They told us that we will be able to cancel the contract ANYTIME and when we did are now threatening us of consequences. I have been trying to reach a Supervisor or Manager for quite sometime but Kylie REFUSES to share that information. Leaving review here in hopes someone reaches out who Kylie reports to because obviously we are one very unhappy customers who were just informed that IF your kid knows how to tie shoes we do not need to teach him how to tie a belt. There are other things but don’t want to make this a super long post. Just looking for someone who can help here and is professional. Updating to add: we found amazing classes (Master Yangs) and instructors for my son and he is much much happier. Save your money and run from this place. If this review was not enough, read their response to my negative review.
I tried many gyms in the area when I moved here and all of them are very good. ATX has an excellent Jiujitsu community. Johns Gym stood out to me because of the people. From the top down everyone is wonderful, helpful, welcoming and have excellent bjj. I am very happy to be a student and coach for Johns gym
I moved up to Leander from South Austin and wanted a good gym to jump into the community and to get physically fit. I mean, just the name Johns Gym. It just made sense for me.But anyway, at 44 years old, I am a lifelong skateboarder and my body is pretty racked up and out of shape. However, since joining the Johns Gym boxing class, I feel like I am getting in the best shape of my life. I have zero experience boxing, so it was pretty intimidating at first, but all that went away once I started getting into it and focusing on the workout and being encouraged by the coach Ernesto and everyone there. Everyone there wants to learn and help each each other learn. We all push each other and encourage each other while we try to figure it out. I have not experienced any douche-baggery or hyper-aggro competitiveness, but at the same time, the workouts are not easy at all. I am physically and mentally pushed to my limit, and it is paying off for me in many ways physically, mentally, and spiritually. Ernesto doesnt fool around. He will carefully gauge where you are and push you to where he thinks you can go. A true professional in his area of expertise. I am also learning how to truly box and it is more fun than I ever thought it would be. My grandfather was a golden gloves boxer in the Army during WWII and now I am beginning to understand his passion for the sport. If you are looking for a quick gym to get in a quick workout before work, maybe this is not the gym for you. However, if you are looking for a community to encourage and be encouraged and learn truly useful skills, this is a great place to be. It is not a corporate style gym, so expect there to be some learning and growth on the staff side of things while we all navigate through the uncertain waters of these uncertain COVID era times. Have some patience and adapt and you will certainly thrive at this gym.
Joining a new gym, especially a martial arts/boxing gym can be a little intimidating for someone who has never practiced the arts before. I can say for sure that this is definitely not the case with John’s gym. From the minute I walked through the door I was wholeheartedly welcomed from the owners, staff, coaches and fellow members. This is definitely a no judge zone. I started with boxing which was excellent but after an injury I figured I would give jui jitsu a try. I had never wrestled or done jui jitsu in the past, but did not need to. They have classes for every level and allow you to proceed at your own preferred speed. Owners and staff are attentive and friendly, coaches all are excellent, and the fellow members are there to help you improve. I highly recommend people give this gym a look if you want to try something new to get into shape and learn a new skill. That goes for both adults and kids.
Although my son and I are rather new to Jiujitsu, not a single moment inside of Johns Gym has felt in any way uncomfortable. We felt completely welcomed here, and relaxed. Which is hard to say because BJJ is very intimidating at first, but with the genuine care that everyone shows to all the grapplers, that intimidation is lifted instantly. While here, my son and I have grown to love BJJ and look forward to each class we take. Everyone is beyond friendly, and knowledgeable, they dont leave anyone feeling like they cant do this and really take the time to teach. Even with the class having people at different levels with their belts, everyone is amazing, and helps teach each other so everyone grows together. You for sure feel like family while attending the classes because you can see and feel the groups desire to grow as a group rather than individuals. I cant express how happy I am that I found Johns Gym and allowed myself the opportunity to not let my intimidation get the best of me. This place is amazing!
Incredible experience- went into Ju-jitsu. Had incredible fun and great excersise. You get personal connections with the people there, and is very rewarding as a program.
I came in to challenge myself and the team there really welcomed me into their family and made me feel super comfortable. If you’re looking for a new challenge this is the place!
Looking for a family instead of big box gym? You have arrived!Previously, I was a member of a large corporate gym for 12+ years and never felt like I was a real part of it. I was a nameless face lost in a sea of spandex. It was extremely easy to loose motivation and desire to make myself better.Personal attention, encouragement and support are what I need to succeed...and Johns Gym was the beacon I had been in search of for so many years!I joined in January 2013, after the birth of my first child, and Ive still not looked back. At Johns Gym they are there for YOU. They want you to succeed...period. Coach Henry Marshall has been a godsend in my training and has unlocked a personal passion into the world of kettlebell sport I never knew existed. At this very moment, I am almost 8 months pregnant with baby #2 and am HEALTHIER and STRONGER than Ive been in a over a decade! This place is home to me and I feel so lucky to be a part of their family. Thank you Johns Gym! You are my beacon in a sea of spandex...
This is our 3rd gym for Jiujitsu for my kids and it is by far THE BEST one we found and we are here to stay!! The kids love it here and all the coaches are fantastic. John is very knowledgeable and knows how to teach the kids really well. I am so happy we found this place and after only a few months, we already feel like we are part of this gyms family. Dont look further, this is the best place is town and my kids have learn a lot more here. Quality teaching is hard to find.
This place offers a lot more than just a gym. It is a place where you become family. Ive been a member for a month now, and it only keeps getting better. They offer classes for all types of experience levels, from beginners to advanced, and are spread out to where you can attend multiple courses in one day. The atmosphere is great, and the instructors are there for you, and not because its their job, but because they really want to see you succeed. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a friendly atmosphere with a results oriented mentality.
Started training BJJ here 6 months ago with zero experience. Highly recommend this gym for any age (kids classes look amazing) or experience level. The coaches are patient and skilled, the people are friendly, and most importantly there is no ego in the gym. What this means is when you train with someone more skilled than you theyre there to help you grow. I ask a lot of questions and am always surprised that people/coaches are willing to spend so much time on me. If youre looking to improve yourself this is the place for you. Without a doubt one of the best decisions Ive made.
Johns Gym is truly a place where every one knows your name. Its not a big, flashy gym, but its got everything you need for a solid workout. Its the first gym Ive been to that the owners, John and Jasmine, are participating in the classes with you. They honestly care about your success and are always right there cheering you on! Ive met some pretty awesome people here that treat me and my kids like family. Its been almost a year now since joining John Gym and I can honestly say I LOVE training here!
If i could give 10 stars or more to Johns Gym I would do it in a heartbeat. On my first day upon entering Johns Gym to observe the environment, I felt a sense of belonging. I was immediately greeted at the door as well as by everyone else inside. There were no egos as everyone was welcoming with open arms. As a veteran of 13 years in the Marine Corps I was amazed at the FREE veterans jujitsu class that are offered as well (which was my original purpose of observing the gym). The instructors at Johns Gym have tremendous work ethic, and have impressed me with the vast amounts of knowledge, and the high quality of energy they demonstrate on a daily basis. Their knowledge instilled in me has helped lead me to a gold medal at my very first competition.Overall, Johns Gym performance exceeded what was expected. Their knowledge and tireless instructions will be instrumental to the successful family oriented environment. I enthusiastically recommended this Gym for everyone. It will definitely be worth your time.
This place is great - enough said. Classes are amazing, staff is friendly and encouraging, clean facility. The trainers, as well as your other students, are welcoming to all ages and support you in your fitness goals. You gotta do what works for you. You are the biggest factor in whether a workout or a gym will get you the results. I can honestly say I love a variety of sports, but theres never been a workout like the boxing & kickboxing that I absolutely crave. Plus, every student has their own heavy bag in class. No black eyes at work, very little risk of injury...just buckets of sweat each night. Youll love it - do yourself a favor and get into Johns for a free class. Theyll do the rest
Do not sign anything here.Did a 30 trial with a friend. He was mistaken on his trial end date and cancelled the day after the last day of the trial. They charged him $300 even though he had been to a total of 2 classes during the trial and hadn’t been in over two weeks before cancelling. While trying to reason with the owners he was met with a lot of hostility and they said he was lucky they didn’t charge him $600 instead of $300 - for using the gym twice and cancelling 24 hours too late. This is a locally owned business and the owner could very easily just decide not burn bridges instead of acting like some corporate machine with an impenetrable refund policy.Fortunately my friend told me about his experience in time for me to cancel immediately. I still had a week left, but if was going to join after that trial I’m sure not going to anymore. I would never do business with someone like this, nor recommend them to anyone else. Now queue the owner replying to this review, calling me a liar and justifying the fine print on his contract stipulations just like he’s done with all the other people here who’ve said the same thing.I don’t care if you’re within your legal rights John, it’s bad business. People don’t like dealing with businesses like you. No amount of legal jargon will change that.
This has got to be the best gym I ever joined. When I walked in two months ago I was greeted with friendly faces and smiles+ and to this day that hasnt changed. Where else can you find a gym that lets you have a free trial for 30 days. I knew after day 1 though that this was the gym for me. The instructors are great and actually want to see you get better. The classes offered here are great and so are the people. The atmosphere is great for the whole family.
I have been a member at John’s Gym for a year now. In that time it has become a second home to me. The knowledge and experience of the trainers is excellent. The gym is clean, functional, and well equipped. But more important to me is the promotion of constructive growth and acceptance. Individuals who want to learn and develop in their chosen discipline thrive here; while show boaters, and more abusive people that might thrive at other gyms are quickly excluded. This gym and its trainers changed me from an unskilled and inexperienced boxer and helped me to become skilled and confident within the ring. I love this gym and I am grateful to John and Jasmine for the culture of family that they have created here.
We have been coming for 6 months now, feeling comfortable everyday. Our kiddo has learned this amazing art to a level we did not expect, in a short period of time. Our instructors have treated us like family.A family oriented and welcoming environment.Very happy to be a part of this gym!!Great place!!
I havent had this much fun working out since I stopped playing team sports in high school many years ago. The instructors are very knowledgeable and I usually leave each workout sweating and wanting more. I would highly recommend Rob as a boxing coach and Henry as a strength training coach. The gym also has free weights for people that like the traditional weight lifting workouts.
This gym is solid. I lost about 25 pounds here, and gained a lot of skill and confidence. Cons- Its not cheap. I was paying $200 a month. You need to go to classes, not just open gym to get the full value of your money. Also- your schedule needs availability to really get the full value, you cant just show up for a quick workout whenever you want. Pros- small-ish size, personal touch, amazing atmosphere and good friendly people. Good programs for kids. John himself, along with his staff, are class acts. I tried boxing, Muay Thai, and BJJ in the 7 months I was there and they were all great. Just couldnt get in the class time for my schedule and budget. Would highly recommend them to anyone though.
I joined Johns Gym around 3 months ago and I must say the energy inside this place is unlike any other gym! Its got a family feel to it as everyone knows each others names and motivates each other. I do kickboxing on Monday nights with Janelle and even though its killer I always look forward to it! I also work out with Henry twice a week in the Iron Tamers class doing Kettle bell training. I had never worked out with kettle bells before but I love that it pushes you to be better than you were the week before. I love being pushed and I have seen so much result from it! I feel leaner and stronger and am excited to continue on with this journey to a healthier, stronger me!
Johns Gym is a great place to learn and grow your knowledge of mixed martial arts. If you want to learn, get in fighting shape and have some fun, this is the place for you. The boxing class challenged me physically and mentally.
The instruction is very professional and led by top of the line coaches that are absolute experts on their craft. However their intense focus and high standards do not detract from a fun laid back atmosphere with a family feel. inhave found great training partners and friends on and off the mats. If you dont train there... well what are you waiting for?
I came to Johns Gym to learn Muay Thai and strengthen up and Ive been very satisfied with the results. The staff and coaches are very friendly and supportive. The will Immediately call out when your doing something wrong and make sure your doing it correctly before moving on. They always stick around to answer any questions or help improve your form. The coaches will also push you to do your best during workouts which is something I admire a lot. I used to stop during workouts at the gym thinking I couldnt go anymore or that I hit my limit, then get frustrated when I didnt see the results I wanted. Coaches here showed me I could do more and go further and just after 2 weeks, I could already feel my energy levels growing and my body changing.I would recommend Johns Gym to anyone wanting to get fit or break away for the regular gym routine. And those wanting to learn martial arts /self defense.
Working out and training is fun here at Johns Gym! Jasmine and John have created a very welcoming environment that lacks the intimidation factor that can be found at traditional gyms. The instructors are phenomenal and pay attention to each student, training them to improve their form and skill. Im inspired, reinvigorated and thrilled to be a part of Johns Gym!
The gym is decently sized and they have pretty new equipment/mats. I went to this gym for three months and would have continued going. My only negative is that I would have liked to have had some backing and been able to fight under their brand. Anyways, the coaches will make you better and the team was fun to be a part of.
Ive been taking MMA class for about a year and a half. I know I picked the right gym.
Super tight knit group of friends and families!!You really feel welcome and at home when you are sweating your rear off (literally) - they make working out fun (hard to believe I know)!!!Unfortunately I am moving further South in Austin and can no longer attend the gym : (They will all be missed and I can only pray that I will find another gym 1/2 as amazing as this place!!!
John and the team have been outstanding!I experienced a knee injury a few years ago and wasn’t certain if ever make it back to training. I found John’s gym and gave rolling another go. John listened to my story and showed that he truly cared about helping get back and helped ease me back into the fold. I’ve been training the last 3 months and my knee has never felt better and my confidence is back!John and everyone single person I’ve met at the gym all have great attitudes and genuinely want to help others out with improving their game. The culture at the gym is very laid back and inviting. I’ve experienced other schools around Austin and John’s is truly a cut above.Highly highly highly recommend John’s gym to anyone thinking about starting to train or just looking for a new gym.Damn good Brazilian jiu-jitsu and a fun friendly atmosphere!!!
Johns Gym is the best place to get real results. Their instructed workouts are very effective and you will get a great workout.I work out with Jasmine Choksi as a personal trainer. Unlike most gyms where the PT just counts reps while looking around at the other people not paying attention, Jasmine teaches and corrects your form to the finest detail. She pushes you to get more out of a workout then you would ever get yourself. She follows up daily with you on your diet and eating habits. She finishes with real stretching techniques.Johns Gym and Jasmine are worth every penny spent because of real results.
Ive been going for a little over 6 months now for boxing and I feel like its time for an honest review. This place has far exceeded any expectations I had. I leave better every time because the coaches really focus on individuals and help get rid of bad habits. If you show up, you will become great. I look forward to staying and getting into their other classes. This place is the bomb! Thank yall
Johns Gym is great ! I love it here feels just like home. All of the trainers are great and very knowledgeable of their crafts. You will learn a lot of new things as well as getting in shape.
This gym is awesome! I was quite nervous about joining but once I walked in that all changed. Everyone is really welcoming and truly want to help you learn. You can build friendships easily. Classes teach you alot and give you a good workout. You should definitely give it a try.
I showed up nine months ago with zero BJJ experience. Not only have I progressed quickly thanks to the phenomenal coaching, but its helped me adjust my focus in my professional and personal life for the better. If youre looking to actually change and improve your life, I strongly suggest you step onto the mats with us.
Great atmosphere, very family-friendly. Definitely a great place to reach your goals
It is a great work out, with friendly people. Great place to give you the push you need. i wish I hadnt moved to the complete other side of town, or I wouldnt have quite going!
Johns Gym is a fantastic gym with great workout that lead to fantastic results. Ive only been going there for a few months but Im already shaping up and becoming more and more confident. The people there are all friendly and supportive. Of all the gyms out there Johns Gym is the one that deserves your attention the most.
I havent felt this fit in years! I never want to go to bust my butt at Johns Gym at first, but after Im there I feel so much better by the end of the day. And the classes are usually small enough to receive quality attention every time. Another great thing about it is the atmosphere. Some gyms can be somewhat uninviting, but these guys just want to work out and learn some cool things. The instruction is great as well- Samy in particular is extremely detail-oriented! Thanks Johns Gym!
This is a great gym with a fun atmosphere. Ive learned a lot over the past year and really appreciate all the help from the instructors at Johns Gym. Its an awesome place to train. Keep up the great work!
In a more upscale side of town so you pay for it. If you want straight to the point and more time at the gym for cheaper price and better training go to Lords Gym.
Gave 3 stars to try being as neutral as possible since I only attended the intro free class. When I submitted my contact info expressing interest in signing up, someone from the gym responded quickly. They even followed up the day of my scheduled intro class (more than once) to confirm I’d be showing up. Went to the beginner class, which was fun and taught by a friendly, welcoming instructor. After the class, having had a chance to speak to the rep, I began to get a sneaking suspicion that this place wasn’t for me (I tried to ignore that feeling in the spirit of giving it a fair shot). I’ve trained at other boxing gyms before moving to austin and this was the first place I’d been where they said they’d charge me more if I wanted sparring or even some limited contact training. That was a little concerning, but probably not unheard of. I will say that my previous boxing gym in Corpus Christi did not charge more based on the intensity of training. Full disclosure: I did sandbag em a bit in not letting on that I had more than a couple of rounds of sparring under my belt and that it wasn’t my first rodeo. But that was was purely outta curiosity rather than trying to be sneaky or anything like that (I’m also in terrible shape so I was trying to ease back in). The more experienced folks in that class were very nice and helpful in explaining the drills, which would be awesome for someone who had never strapped em on before.Back to my motivation for this post, tho. I signed up for the free trial with every intention of giving the gym a fair shake. They are pricey but had a full gym when I was there so they’re obviously doing something right. In the end, after being too busy to return that week and having given it some thought, I concluded that I wouldn’t be going forward with a full membership. To emphasize, this decision was based on my own individual, extremely limited experience with John’s and is in no way a judgment of the quality of training offered there. But yeah, rather than mess around after having decided this gym wasn’t for me and finally having time to call during a decent hour, I tried to contact them at the number provided to inquire as to their cancellation policy. I’m still within the 30 day trial period, to be totally clear. When I called the listed #, I was informed that I’d reached an answering service and that they could not help me cancel. So I texted the # that i first received texts from when I initially expressed interest in trying the gym out. After more than 24 hours waiting for a response, I texted again. That was several hours ago and still have not gotten a response. I’m getting the feeling they might be hoping that I’ll be too busy to stop by in person before my trial period is over (which may very well happen, considering my work schedule) and I’ll be on the hook for 6 months. To reiterate, this review is meant to focus on the issues I’ve experienced with their 30 day free trial. I won’t opine on the quality of training because I did not give it a full go. Just a word of caution to those perhaps considering trying them out but who also may not have the most flexible schedule. Maybe this review will get me a phone call from them... here’s to hoping!
My son is training jiu jitsu from past 2 years, highly recommend this place, all coaches and assistant coaches are so knowledgeable patient and supportive to kids, my son absolutely love coming here.Coach James trains for small kids, he is dedicated encouraging patient knowledgeable and awesome coach, couldn’t ask for better than coach James for my son.
The best gym for combat ever
IF YOU WANT YOUR CHILD TO BE PUSHED ASIDE! AND MADE FEEL LESS*THIS IS THE PERFECT GYM FOR YOU*We been coming here for about 8 months now. And Ive seat here and whiteness not just my son but other kids being pushed aside. This place only cares about the kids that are already competing. JAMES told me himself(one of the instructors) or a poor excuse of one.Why did I last so long? Bc I hoped that it would change. But it never did. I tried talking to them but all they did was get a attitude! Today Im thankful to have found a better gym that treats my son equally and is helping him grow. Thanks for nothing! I regret letting them put my kid down. And him asking himself why he wasnt enough! This people dont deserve to work with kids!
Great place. Ive only utilized the kickboxing and zumba classes and those alone are worth a membership. The instructors are awesome and give thorough workouts every single time. Everyone who works there is really nice and get to know you by name. Go check it out!
Johns gym has been a wonderful experience. Whether you want to get strong, get fit, learn self defense or even compete in competition, johns gym has so many options for everyone. Ive been going for a few months now and it really feels like my second family.
I love training here, everyone is super helpful and its very beginner friendly. i was a little nervous to try Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai but the instructors were top notch, high level so I felt safe. If youre looking for something unique and different that will get your butt in shape I definitely recommend Johns Gym. Also, Henrys Fit to the Core class is a killer alternative to Cross Fit
Since I was 7 years old, I have always dreamed of being able to be a world champion. I found a place where I have changed so much in a positive way. I live approximately an hour, and 45 minutes. Sometimes longer due to the traffic. I am dedicated to drive that far Mon-Thurs because this place is that damn great. I found a place that is so positive, and a place where I put my heart, and dedication towards. Everyone there is welcoming to anyone, and the coaches there absolutely, can bring the best out of you. Anyone that trains there is apart of a great team. Whether, you looking to fight, get in the best shape of your life, are interested in Kettlebell, or have a passion for bjj. Whatever you goal is, this is THE GYM to train at. The coaches, and teammates here will help you progress, and get you to go beyond your goals. This gym, team, and coaches is top notch. This place gave me more confidence, a place where I am accepted by everyone, and place I absolutely love to be.
This place is awesome. Incredible trainers and really friendly and encouraging. Nobody makes you feel bad for anything!
I moved to Austin not knowing anyone and not knowing the first thing about Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I was a former wrestler and I was looking for a good workout. I found a place where I have an incredible workout and a place where its more of a family then a gym. I have been training for over 1 year and I still wake up planning my day around going to noon class. If you can relate to the former me ((A 40 something/ X athlete and better days were in my 20s ..)) then come to my gym.. I am in better shape today then 15 years ago. If your not finding results or bored of your gym this will be your new home. I have a new purpose and motivation to wake up every morning and train.
Was great
Best gym in Austin! Instructors and the people that work there are amazing. I feel like family there and there’s no gym that matches it.
I signed up for the striking package here 3 months ago and have enjoyed every second of it. Their Muay Thai coach Brendan is excellent.
Ive been training Jiu Jitsu at Johns Gym for close to 5 months on a friends recommendation. Very welcoming and knowledgeable staff and great patrons. John(owner) once told me that one of the things he was most proud of was the culture he and his team had cultivated within the gym. I cannot recommend Johns Gym highly enough.
This gym has a great reputation around town. Owners care very much about clients. I didnt join, but it had nothing to do with the quality of the instructors or staff
I work in IT, so I sit down a lot. To be honest, I was in pitiful shape, 200lb @ 27% body fat, smoker, drinker and altogether unhappy. Id tried so many gyms/programs before but there was something different about this place. I love to go there, I dream of my next workout at night, this gym has become my second home and I have become addicted to fitness. Ive quit smoking, Im losing fat and gaining muscle like crazy and completely reworked my lifestyle. If it wasnt for Johns gym, Id still be the same old couch potato. Thanks Johns Gym!
I joined Johns Gym about 3 weeks ago and love it. I took a trial class, and afterwoods spoke to several of the students as well as John. Everyone was very friendly, helpful and excited to be there. Although I am new to BJJ, the instructors and my fellow students have been very patient and encouraging. This is a great group of people. I highly recommend Johns Gym.
My daughter just went to a 16-week weight loss program consultation that doesnt even have anything to do with martial arts?? Why is this program even being held at this place??? Easy way to trick naive clients who are trying to lose weight in thinking theyre getting a deal. Bad decision Johns Gym...
I joined Johns Gym about a month ago, and hired Jasmine as my personal trainer. First let me say that Ive been out of shape for 20 years and reluctantly joined after a friend told me he had and was seeing Jasmine for his personal training as well. Johns Gym is not a meat market. Its not even your typical gym, which is awesome for guys like me. Everyones friendly and helpful, and are there to work out and better themselves. I love this place!Jasmine is awesome, too! Very sweet lady, and she knows her stuff! She immediately asked me what my diet was like, and then set me up with a nutrition plan. I tell her every single meal I have, six times a day, and she either tells me good job, or offers suggestions to have instead of what I may have had. Twice a week I strength train with her, and twice a week I do cardio boxing with one of the other trainers.I know Ive got a long way to go, but Jasmine and Johns Gym are exactly what I needed. Guidance with living healthier in general, praise when I do well, and confidence building while I work to better myself. I cant recommend this place enough, and would tell anyone to come check it out!
Wow love going to Johns Gym. I know Im a woman but love the Ju jitsu Classes never had a workout like that before. Felt great to get a work out and learn self defense at the same time. Just a great experience all the way around and would recommend it to everyone. If you are around the area and thinking about any kind of work out stop in and ask for John he’s a great guy to talk to and way cute too. ;-)
A wonderful, positive, intense, encouraging, and well ran gym!! Its always great to be surrounded by great people, and welcomed by friendly staff and instructors! Definitely the best gym I have been to that offers cardio kickboxing!
Ive been training BJJ at this gym for almost 2 years now and Its really been a great experience. The atmosphere is laid back and friendly to all and at the same time very tough and competitive. I dont always try to get most people I talk to to start training BJJ (Yes I do) but when I do, I refer them to this place because I know theyll get treated right and trained well.
Since joining Johns Gym here in Austin my BJJ game has really stepped up. The instruction is very practical to use and implement into your game right away and the instructors go out of their way to help and train with you outside of class. This gym has a family feel to it that you cant find at other gyms. I competed at the Austin Open a few months after joining and with John in my corner I took Gold! Im very proud to be part of the Johns Gym family.A background on my search: I just moved here a few months ago from Denver CO where I trained at one of the top BJJ gyms in CO. Finding a good gym here in Austin was one of my main concerns. I had a list of about 10 recommended gyms to try out. Johns gym in Austin was the first one I tried and after one session I made my decision. I didnt even bother to visit the other ones and Im happy about my decision.
This the place one has to go. Staff are super friendly. They offer kickboxing, muai Thai, jijutsu and some strength exercises. They have sessions and it is really really really fantastic. As you can see everybody has rated it 5 out of 5. So guys dont hit gym hit John gym perfect for every individual 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
My children have participated with three other gyms in Tennessee and Texas since they were 5 years old. Johns Gym is by far a higher quality of instruction and display a true love of the art of Jiu Jitsu. My children have now been students of Johns Gym for the past two years and display respect and a healthy self confidence. Thanks, to The Johns Gym family.
Im only a few months in with the Muay Thai program at the gym, but Ive loved every second of it. Im always looking forward to the next class every time I leave the gym and every instructor is well trained and will push you to get your desired results. My money is well spent at Johns Gym and I cant wait to start learning some BJJ!
If you are looking into great training facility this is the place. Have very good teachers/coaches. It is well kept up. The training is a-one. If you would like to just learn boxing fundamentals or become competitive. Also if you would like to learn jui-jitsu, this is a great place to learn at. Coach ed s are very personal with you. There is also cross training for those that would like to get into MMA and learn from some great coaches. It has great parking and is located in a small strip mall. If you get hungry or thirsty after your work out there are restaurants and a sports bar located very close. The facility has most everything in as far as weights punching bags etc. They will coach you in not only fundamentals but advance traing in either boxing or jui-jitsu, or Mixed Martial Arts. Highly recommended. First month is free.!! I have had the opportunity to observe the training in progress and can verify the level of the coaching being at the top of their level. Can attend for the first month to get yourself aclimated and to convince yourself to attend. Great place for a terrific workout. The
I joined Johns Gym in March 2014 after looking at several other gyms that feature boxing in Austin. The moment I walked in I could sense a different energy than the others I had previously visited. It has such a motivating vibe to place, and that could be in part to the boxing ring which made me feel like I could go further than just a cardio boxing class if I wanted. After meeting a few of the trainers and telling them about my goals and what they had to offer, along with the very fair pricing, I was all in. Ive been taking boxing classes with Kurtiss since I started and can feel the progression and am about to start taking some boxing technique classes before I even think about stepping foot in the ring. With the support of the trainers and other members, it feels like an authentic gym, and not some corporate quantity facility. Ive never had a more satisfying workout and I recommend anyone who wants to take their fitness seriously to get involved at Johns Gym.
