We just ended a week on the 2006 368 Meridian Missy Jo. We had a fabulous time. The boat was in great shape and ran perfectly. I had read many reviews before our trip and was a little nervous seeing mixed reviews for nearly every charter operator and boat in the area. In the end we picked Ship Harbor and Missy Jo as it was the perfect boat for two couples. The check out was delayed slightly as staff was still cleaning the boat, but Id rather wait a little than get a hastily cleaned boat. Once we got onboard I was impressed at the condition of the boat especially considering it is 15 years old and has been chartered. The whole charter process was straight forward and Mark, Esther and the other staff members were very professional.
We have never delt with a more unprofessional company in all our years of chartering. The secretary Ester, needs to be fired. She has screamed and yelled at us twice now. She will ruin this company with her attitude and extremely poor customer service skills.I am still in shock at how we were treated by simply asking a few questions about paperwork needed on the Yacht.Stay very far away from this company.
I found the owner to be unprofessional, untrustworthy, and abusive. Good luck if you choose to do business with Mark
I have had my boat, North Star, in charter with Ship Harbor since 2015. As you can expect with boats, things happen. It is how things are addressed that make the difference between a poor experience and a great one. It is very much a partnership between the yacht owner, the company, and the customer, and its tough to make it all perfect.I keep my boat with Ship Harbor because of the partnership with Mark. I offer my boat to him in the best condition possible and he and the staff work very successfully to address any issues that may come up, including when it gets run aground. When I pick it up on the fall, Im always impressed with what I find.My boat has continued repeat charterers that come back to Ship Harbor and I believe it is for the same reason, they are well taken care of and have a great experience.I am sad to read about a single experience, but Im sure there is more to the story. There always is. I can only speak to my history. I have not had a problem that was not respectfully solved during my 5 seasons. Thats around 45+ charters. With boats, that is amazing.
Great charter for 5 days aboard the Northstar. My wife and I cruised all over the San Juan’s over Labor Day weekend and had an incredible adventure!!! The yacht and all of its systems worked perfectly for us. Thank you Mark and Carole and Rina for making this happen!!’
I have rented 3 times from Ship Harbor for over $21,000. Every time there were major maintenance issues besides the basic-Its a rental boat stuff. Mark the owner made some attempts to address them but never fixed them and did not give me any compensation The main one was two times we had a non-working Dinghy. With three couples on a large boat that is a problem. Good thing I brought a Kayak. When I returned he said he would check it out and compensate me and after I sent him multiple emails he ignored them. None of the boats ever had a working GPS. Good thing I had chart books and have going there for over 40 years. Other things like lots of non working lights etc....... His office staff just roll their eyes when you bring these things up-too bad they are really nice people. The one star above is for them. BEWARE THERE ARE OTHER COMPANIES OUT THERE THAT HAVE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!
I bareboated a 33 foot Beneteau sailboat a few years back from Ship Harbor and it was a great experience. Paperwork and boat check out were open, helpful and straight forward. The staff was great helping us organize a shuttle from and to the SEA airport. Also, a great location b/c it kept us from having to fly or cross the boarder before starting our charter - just saved us time and money. I hope to charter again with these guys in 2019.
Fantastic whale watching tour!!! Highly recommend!!
Review of Ship Harbor Yacht Charters. My husband and I were excited to charter a 40 foot boat from Ship Harbor for six nights in July 2019. While we had beautiful weatherand a great itinerary, we were quite disappointed with the charter company. We paid extra to have a full day with an experienced captain to showus the ins and outs of running this particular boat. We have owned boats over the years but never larger than 25 feet. First of all, our fullday was from 11 am to 5pm with a 45 minute waiting period as we prepared to leave Anacortes because of a problem with the boat.We were never quite sure what the problem was because our captainwouldn’t tell us! When the owner of the charter company finally came down to investigate the problem we discovered that in fact there was no problem. The only real problem was that the captain was not at allfamiliar with our boat. This delay caused us to run out of time to go over use of the anchor. Our captain may have had 30 years of experience but he was NOT a teacher and did not know our boat. Our next problem occurred on day 4. Our generator would not work.Fortunately, we were traveling with another boat with a captain who was an experienced mechanical engineer. He most likely could have fixed the problem but the manual for the boat was no where to be found. The only manual we were given was a 20 page generic “how to”. When we called Ship Harbor we were told that since it was Sunday it would be difficult to find a repair person but we were promised that Monday when we arrived in Deer Harbor a mechanic would be available. So the one night we didn’t have shore power we also had no generator – causing us to lose some refrigerated food. The toilet pumpalso ran all night that night. Needless to say one of our six nights was miserable. Back to Deer Harbor… the mechanic never showed up.When we arrived back at Ship Harbor there wasn’t even an apologyFor our mishaps. (Nor was there any partial refund)This rental had obviously had a lot of use. It was in need of cleaningand replacement of items that were listed as included. There were no binoculars, the bbq tools were too rusty to use, there were no bbq cleaning tools, the coffee pot was cracked, the carpet covers were filthy, the door handle kept falling off the bedroom door, and the flashlights were worthless.
Great experience on the Mary Christy. Its an older boat, but well outfitted and maintained. Our checkout/checkin experience with the Ship Harbor staff was well organized and efficient.
We just reserved our 5th charter with this company. Their boats are all well maintained and the owners if very meticulous about the boats and those who charter them. We did charters with other companies, some who are no longer in business but we have been very happy with ship Harbor and the staff members there.
We had chartered previously with Anacortes Yacht Charters and the experience was outstanding. We went with SHYC this time because they had the vessel we wanted, an Ocean Alexander 480 Sport. Everything was good until we took a close look at the yacht. The stateroom carpets and bridge carpet needed professional cleaning. The salon carpet was badly frayed. There was black grime around the edges of the bridge carpet and it was badly stained, and the second captains chair on the bridge was broken (I have pictures of everything). They changed out the dinghy at the last second and gave us a smaller dinghy with a 3.5 horse motor, which was barely enough to go anywhere - when it decided to run at all.I showed and explained all of these issues to Mark (who owns SHYC - I checked the incorporation papers) when we got back. He actually invited it when he asked, How can we make this better? I was very polite, but honest. I dont think he liked my answers. He did not offer to make it right in any way. I then wrote him a friendly and detailed letter regarding the experience, and how they could improve for future customers for a simple reason: I want him to succeed. He never bothered to answer. We are now back at Anacortes Yacht Charters for next summer.
Would be nice if the guy answered my email request or my phone call.
A CRAPPY CHARTER - We recently chartered with SHYC in Anacortes. This charter was approximately my 15th sailboat charter and the 4th time for a Beneteau - it was my first on the west coast. This boat was, by comparison with prior charters, unimpressive in every way I can think of but what was really foul was the putrid smell from one of the heads. I think we werent fully aware of how bad it was until after we departed and I was hoping that a pump-out might resolve it. It didnt - nor did the Max Control toilet treatment we got from West Marine at Friday Harbor (nothing against MC or WM - its just that this head was really foul). Upon further investigation, it was figured out that (1) the thru-hull would not open and (2) the hoses from the holding tank were not secure and leaked. Additionally, it looked as though a prior charterer may have attempted to pump overboard without opening the thru-hull with a predictably foul (think of a fecal explosion) outcome under the heads vanity.Upon return, we brought the issue to Mark Fs attention. Mark performs the checkouts and (so he told me) hes also the president of SHYC. When I followed up with him early the next week, he said he agreed that there was a problem and that he would be providing some reimbursement. When we disagreed about how much reimbursement was fair, he changed his tune completely. His new stance was that the boat was sent out in good order and that we had caused the problem and he even threatened to charge us for the necessary repairs. Pretty amazing!! To me, its negligent for a charter company to send a boat out in this condition and its unlike any charter company Ive worked with previously. There are things about a charter boat that the charter company cant control but this isnt one. A simple inspection of the heads by the cleaning crew could easily have identified this problem. Needless to say, I do NOT recommend SHYC for anyone. Even if you have to adjust your schedule in order to charter from one of the other 2 Anacortes charter outfits, its worth while to do so.
