I went in to get my car looked at because it had been acting weird. They were very nice and easy to talk to. Even though they did not find anything wrong they did not charge me for checking it. This place came recommended from quite a few fellow students at ISU. I would definitely come back here again!

We wanted to credit this place with a great review and kept waiting for it and giving them chances (but I waited 3 weeks to make sure its factual not emotional) ... but sadly we were just put on the bottom of the list. We were traveling from TN to MN on a vacation in a 3 vehicle caravan after selling our house - so a very stressful time - and had truck problems along the way. They agree to diagnose us but essential didnt run a diagnostic & instead just ran what we assumed was the problem (our expertise is in ministry not auto mechanics) - but we TRUSTED and waited in a hotel for FOUR days with all our family and 2 pets and zero communication - and when our calls went unanswered and we drove the 10 miles out there to his shop daily we were greeted with anger and frustration!! My husband is +THE KINDEST GUY+ youll ever meet so hearing that he was exploded on was a first in our 28 years of marriage!!! Clearly we were the LAST on the fix it list and we should have been triaged! After 4 days of struggling through if we re-enlisted our hotel or not (thank god THEY were gracious) we got our truck and TOOK OFF from the remote cow farm!! But alas in 10 minutes we learned it wasnt the catalytic converters that were the problem like they said and most likely an overall diagnostic was never run ... it took us an additional 4 days in cities beyond Ames to figure out our issue was simply a FUEL PUMP. So ... Bills Muffler gladly took $2k from us when we were vulnerable and didnt need to spend that. The mechanics in the next cities diagnosed us within 30 minutes even when they didnt have time to fix us!!!! How would you feel when your vacation that should have taken a 2 drive to took 11?? I surely wouldnt recommend this place even though I initially wanted to so much. This guy cost us a LOT in time and money and now ottumwa is a bad word in our house!

Went in yesterday afternoon to get my exhaust looked at and found out I needed my resonator and muffler replaced. Doug was upfront about what needed done and the best price he could give me, so we got the parts ordered and everything taken care of this morning. There’s a lot to like with these folks. Doug and his staff are courteous, professional, honest, and friendly; he’s definitely the most soothing car guy I’ve ever done business with. Their prices are fair and they do good work. They have a comfortable, clean, and hospitable waiting area. Best of all, my vehicle doesn’t sound like a racecar anymore. Excellent service and and a great price!

The worst places I have ever been to. I changed the tire today; they charged 209.63 dollars plus tax. I searched online the exact model of that tire listed price 160 dollars plus. They charge almost 50 dollars for one tire installation and tax. I went there before I changed the tire. I told me the price is 196 dollars, including tax for all the installation. Today after the installation, they directly charged for 209.63. Even they charge this much more, and the final results that the car is not fixed. The pressure light is still on. When I call them back, they told me to go to other shops to fix this problem. They could charge for extra to fix the light. I don’t know why they are doing this. If you couldn’t do it, it’s okay. But now you charge much more installation fee and the car is not fixed, and you told me to go to other shops. I don’t know how their installation skill is. But one tire change is such an easy fix problem, and they couldn’t fix it. I also search for Walmart installation, which is only 25 dollars for installation. The price is almost half of the price they charged. This is one of the worst experiences I have experienced in any shop. I do firmly not recommend this shop.

I was in a bit of a pinch - my car was in a different shop with a pretty high price tag possibility for a complete replacement of my exhaust system. But the other shop recommended Magic Mufflers as they could possibly do repairs that wouldnt be quite as pricey as replacing my entire system. Not only did Magic Mufflers get me right in, but they were able to fix my car affordably. And theyre continuing to do some research into how to further help my car, because they spotted something that will be a problem soon. These guys are quick, efficient, and practical. I will be taking my car back to them!

I have been dealing with Doug since his days on Duff Avenue, (80s). Just within the last three weeks Doug has changed oil, aligned a car, replaced a muffler under warranty, fixed the exhaust pipes on two vehicles, and installed a set of truck tires. Magic Muffler keeps us on the road with less than new cars. Highly recommend. They are good people. Trust them, just trust them.

These guys are awesome. I went there many times, two of them they didnt charge me for minor things and they told me that is a small gift from us to our customers. They are very friendly and always giving advices for free. The only important thing that you have to call and get appointment instead of going there and they only give you an appointment time in another day because they are always busy. If you went at your appointment time, they will serve you can in very time efficient way.

Had a muffler and half a tailpipe fall off my eleven year old vehicle. Took my car to Magic Muffler where they fixed it in twenty minutes for sixty-four dollars. I absolutely couldnt be happier! Just thirty minutes earlier, I had taken it to the Lithia Nissan dealership, where they gave me an estimate of $1404 - and that sure as heck wasnt going to happen!! When you go to Magic Muffler in Ames, ask for Doug ... hes great!!

After getting work done with Doug and the team, I can say they are truly deserving of all these five star reviews. They are honest, hardworking, and will not over charge. Had a problem with my truck that made it frustrating to work on, but they were always friendly, fair, and made sure everything worked properly and safely before I picked it up. Will keep going to them and referring my friends as well. I rarely review places online but felt these guys were truly worth it.

Update: They patched a tire for us today. Good service again.-----Excellent experience. We didnt know what was wrong with our rattling, leaky exhaust, but the solution turned out to be simple--they just had to tighten down a loose sensor. Because it was so simple, they did it for free! As a bonus, they were also friendly and accessible on the phone. Wed definitely do business with them again.

Im not big on writing review but i have to say these guys are great. My daughter goes to school in Ames and has had several issues with her car. Both times they fix her car for a reasonable price and allowed me to pay over the phone with a credit card. They treated my daughter right and I appreciate that.

Seems like a decent place, had my 99 Silverado exhaust fixed here maybe 8 years ago and just recently had my Mustang GT checked out for a costume exhaust which, unfortunately, wont work. Oh well...yes, Id recommend this place

I also just had a great experience. Im visiting from out of town, went into Magic with an exhaust issue. The parts for my car were not readily available, but they did a repair at a very reasonable price and told me that the repair could last for years.

Im an auto wholesaler in Detroit whose daughter attends ISU. She called me to report a horrendous grinding noise at the front of her car that suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Being a car guy, and based on her description, I knew it wasnt brakes and I could fix it in minutes myself. Maybe a wheel bearing but that usually starts quiet and worsens. But shes going to school 600 miles away from home so I couldnt help her myself and I was just bracing myself for front brake job, at least, necessary or not. I hate that feeling. . .She went into the shop on Friday just before closing time to have it checked out. They fixed within minutes, it was what I suspected, a bent backing plate rubbing against the rotor. They didnt even want to charge her for the 2 minute repair, but I instructed my daughter to leave a $20 tip in the jar because I was so relieved.Let me tell you, as someone in the car industry this kind of honesty is becoming increasingly rare with the improved longevity of automobiles that advances by the year. With the decreasing need for auto repair, many shops have resorted to dishonesty to pay the bills. Which of course, is short-sighted and stupid, however challenging the business environment.Not these guys! Do yourself a favor and send your student here without reservation.

I wont take my car(s) anywhere else!Even for things that I suspect Magic Muffler wont be able to fix, Doug and the guys will always tell me what they think is wrong (for no charge) and then give me a referral to someone that does fix that kind of problem. If Doug tells me somebody is good, I believe him. Hes got a great reputation for his shop and isnt about to ruin it with referrals to shady mechanics.For the things they can fix, I always get an honest estimate and if it ends up costing less, thats what I get charged. They do NOT replace perfectly serviceable parts and never attempt to upsell you. If they tell you something on your car needs to be fixed right now, believe that they have only your safety in mind. If youre on a limited budget, theyll tell you what needs attention NOW and what can wait.Doug-Magic Muffler is on my contacts list on my phone and will stay there as long as I have a car.I only wish I could give them more than 5 stars.

We live in Jewell and have had the same home-town mechanic for years. My guy has never been unable to fix our vehicles. However, when the muffler went out in my 2002 3/4 ton suburban, Ron Imlay was stumped. He called Doug, the owner of Magic Muffler, and described the problem. It was very scary to me to have to take my vehicle to someone who was not my guy, but Doug put us at ease. He had to special order and then modify a muffler for my vehicle because, apparently, when this make/model of suburban was built, the muffler was supposed to last the lifetime of the vehicle, so they didnt make replacement ones. Magic Muffler got me fixed and on the road again for less than $200! Best of all, they didnt try to tell me other stuff was wrong with the truck or sell up to get me to buy anything else. Quality work and integrity! So pleased! Since spreading the word on my Facebook page, dozens of other people have commented that theyve had the same great service. Fantastic!

Went in today for a brakes service, because my car doesnt feel like it stops as fast as it needs to when I hit the brakes. I was expecting at least brake pads replacement, if not rotors as well. Much to my disbelief, Doug test drove my car for me, checked my brake pads and told me theyre fine, that they still have a lot of life on them until at least next year. Honesty like this is hard to come by these days; other places would have ripped me off and put a new hole in my wallet. Im glad Ive found a trusty mechanic in this small town of Ames!

The initial work was done quickly. A short section of pipe between the catalytic converter and the muffler needed replaced. The material seems to be of quality stainless. While there I asked how the rest of the original exaust looked (From the muffler to the tailpipe was replaced less than two years ago by a different shop and is in good condition) I was assured that it was in good shape. I expressed before coming in, and while I was there, that if anything needed to be replaced I was prepared for that and anything that needed attention should be done while the truck was there. Three days later and Ive had an odd noise coming from under the truck. An exaust hanger was torch cut and not replaced. This had allowed the pipe to rest on the torsion bar cross member. There is also an exaust clamp barely hanging on that is rusted out forward of the catalytic converter that should have been replaced while the truck was in for service. I am disappointed in the lack of attention to my requests, the false statements of the condition of the original exaust, and the poor installation(non replacement of hangar) I now have to make a cross-country trip to the west coast and back with an unnecessary rattling noise coming from under the vehicle. I will be using a different shop for any future exaust needs.

Muffler Delete on a 2016 Chrysler 200S AWD. Quoted $125 at this shop. I shopped around a bit and everywhere else was around $200 - $300... ridiculous. So I scheduled the work with Doug at this location. My car was done within an hour, the welds and cuts are very clean and upon my approval, they loaded my muffler into the trunk for me. I have no complaints at all! Would recommend!

Took my car in to have my catalytic converter welded back on after it broke off. Only charged me 60 bucks. Recommended for all exhaust work!Most recently, I had Doug look at a water leak that was soaking the floor of the passenger side. He didnt charge me anything for his assessment and referred me to someone who could unclog the blockage in the A/C drain.

Doug is completely honest! He will tell when something is starting to go bad or if needs to be replaced immediately. He tells you exactly how it is! 100% honestly! He will also show you your old part.

If theyll work on your type of car issue, then take it to them. A very honorable shop.
