Think twice before coming to this location! Hopefully I am an outlier, based on the other reviews, but my experience was not good.TLDR: Not professional, and did not keep true to their word on timing. Did not have my vehicle ready (only tires rotated and oil change) in over 5 days when called before hand to ensure it would be available when I needed it.I called wheel locks on a Monday asking when would be a good time to bring my car in. My car was vibrating at high speeds, needed an oil change, was vibrating at idle (poor mounts), and wanted them to look at the brakes. The lady stated that she would be able to look at it on Wednesday or Thursday. Understanding they are busy, I said it was no problem and brought the car in Tuesday night. I did not hear from them come Friday afternoon and so I called them to see what the status was on the car. The lady said that she has not even looked at it and was going to get it done tomorrow (Saturday) and I said that was okay as long as it was completed by Monday so that I could use it to get to school.I do not hear from them over the weekend. I call them early the following Monday, and they say the car is currently being worked on (only did the balancing of tires and oil change). You can start to sense how this is frustrating to me, as the lack of communication and professionalism is not being shown. A car that should have been completed as late as Thursday, hasnt even been looked at come Friday afternoon and was done Monday morning, 3+ days after they said it would be completed.I express my thoughts to the lady over the phone when I called about my status and she first said that she was really busy, I understand that, but I called on a Monday to see when I could get my car in. Tell me its not going to be until next week, or tell me that you can try to get me in at the end of the week, but may not be until next week. Im a human, I can understand, and I have been flexible throughout this whole exchange.She then went on to say that I was not on the schedule, which seems like a stretch as I stopped in with a list of things I wanted to complete and she even took my phone number. She then asked if I wanted them to do the brake rework and engine mounting, and I said that I would be taking my business elsewhere because of this whole situation. She replied good thanks and hung up.I would not recommend going to this place. I was recommended this place by the cars previous owners and I had alot of trust in them that is now severed. Think twice about your choice. Hopefully I was just the bad egg, but this was very surprising and disappointing experience given the previous reviews.

Let me preface this by saying that given others’ experience, my terrible experience with Wheelock’s seems to be an outlier. Still, it seems wrong not to share what happened.TLDR: I trusted Wheelock’s to check a car before I bought it, bought it with their word that it was all good, and now will have to spend more than $1000 to fix obvious problems they missed.On April 12th I test drove a friend’s car because I was thinking of buying it. I liked it, but noticed the AC was not working and the check engine light was on. She dropped the car off at Wheelock’s to get checked out before I got it, and I had a budget in mind such that if the fixes cost more than that, I wouldn’t take the car. We both called them and made sure to list what we wanted to get checked out (she mentioned a couple issues she knew the car had, and I mentioned the stuff you always want to have checked out before buying a car such as the suspension and clutch, plus the AC which was not working). I eventually got a price (~$2000) and told them to go ahead. I then picked up the car on April 23rd, with them telling me it was 100% and all good. Later that day I noticed the AC was still not working and the check engine light was still on. I had some important trips to do in the next few weeks though, so had to drive it like that. This was red flag 1: how can a decent auto shop say the car is 100% without figuring out and fixing the issue with a check engine light? It’s literally a light on the panel.I later checked the error code for that and got that I needed to replace a part. So that’s $120 off my pocket. Then I tried replacing the AC freon, since that’s usually why the AC doesn’t cool, and it didn’t work. I’m calling them they said - I kid you not - that “the AC was blowing cool air so we thought it was working but it was a cold day”. This was the extent to which they had checked a specific part that both the owner and I had mentioned to not be working. This was red flag 2, and a huge one.I was hoping they’d understand this issue and give me a discount with the actual AC fix, so I decided to take the car there for these last few fixes, as opposed to finding a better prepared auto shop. This was my first car in the US, though, and I was unaware that I need to make an appointment with the auto shop before taking a car. So I just took it, and they said it might take a while because I didn’t have an appointment. That part is fine, 100% understand. What I don’t understand is why they told me on 4 separate occasions that they’d call back with a price “later that day”/“right away”, if they clearly weren’t ready. Just tell me you’ll need a couple more days. This was really frustrating and when I complained they told me to pick up the car and forget it, they would not fix my car. So I wasted a week. It was my fault for giving them the second chance, though - now I know that the issue with my AC is the compressor, so that’s $700-900 off my pocket. If they had checked it properly as *two people* explicitly asked them to when they had the car in April, I’d never have bought it. Now I need to materialize $1000+ out of nowhere because of their disrespect for my money.Again, I hope this is an outlier. But I’d recommend you think twice before going here. Any shop that does not check a check engine light and considers checking whether the AC is blowing cold air (ignoring two people’s word that it isn’t) as properly checking an AC does not seem trustworthy. I’ll be down $3000 by the end of this, and who knows which other issues they did not properly check. Very disappointed. Hope they get better in the future.

Excellent mechanic shop! Wheelock’s has always been able to fit me in when I’ve had a last minute car emergency. Even better the owners do all they can to keep your cost low and get you back on the road in the least amount of time. I highly recommend Wheelock for all your auto care needs!

Best auto service place in town. Recently went to get my AC fixed and the end price ended up being about half of what they quoted me for. They couldve asked me for the full amount and I wouldnt have known any better. Always honest and helpful every time I bring one of my cars in, and always done within a couple days. Theres no other auto shop in town I would go to.

Hands down dependable mechanic that your can trust. Its very important to me that I have someone that I trust to work on my vehicles. Ive have had 2 transmissions installed by Wheelocks plus number of other work. Never had a issue they couldnt fix. Very easy going and will work you into there schedule at the drop of a hate. I have recommend them to all my family and friends. All have had a great and respectful experience. They are always glad to have helped with any issue. No job is to big nor to small for them. Im not a gambling man, but I would bet money you would be a satisfied customer every time.

I started taking my car to Wheelocks earlier in the year and these people are amazing to work with. Made my life easier!

Called Wheelocks after a couple of trusted recommendations. Had an appointment on a Monday. Never heard anything from Jess or Kim on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. I was doing all the calling to check in; they never called me once. Stopped in on Thursday and came up with a plan and timeline for the following week for a potential fix on the car to completed. The time went by and Jess still hadn’t communicated with me or fixed the vehicle. So I went and picked it up. Vehicle was dead when I arrived and needed to be jumped and was not put back together. Very poor customer service and lack of communication. Showed very little concern for me as a customer. I would not recommend doing business with Wheelock’s!!

Please dont go here. They clearly knew that my car had problems and wouldnt last very long but didnt tell us about it. Spent more than 2500$ on fixing my car here and after 2 weeks the car had completely broke. Not honest business. I would rate 0 if I could.

Wheelocks handled my problem professionally and respectfully. (There was a definite miscommunication problem over the phone, but they were able to explain and figure out a solution.) I would recommend Wheelocks if youre looking for honest people who will do honest work. If able, I would just recommend to bring your car in and talk in person. I really think that they will work with you. Looking back, it would have been easier to bring my car in and explain, rather than how it happened over the phone.

Terrible customer service. Was rude over the phone when asking about a tire replacement. Took it in to have the engine looked at later and they said theyd call us within 3 hours and never did, leaving us wandering without a car. Then they said theyd call us back for a quote to get the engine fixed, by the end of the day, and its been about 2 weeks. Pretty ridiculous, weve since gone elsewhere to get things taken care, because they clearly dont care about acquiring new customers.

Wheelocks AutoRepair helps repair most types of vehicles. The reason I go to them is because theyre a lot more honest than other places in Ames. Their prices are low, and they dont try to sell you any repairs/parts you dont need. Theyre a lot more of a mom n pop shop compared to other businesses nearby.

The experience here has always been positive. Ive price-shopped- - one time a dealer quoted me $500 for a left outer tie rod and right inner ball joint. I took it here and did not tell them anything except to check the front. They said you need a left outer tie rod and right inner ball joint and itll be $250. Wheelocks Rocks. UPDATE: A major discount tire dealer in Ankeny put on new tires for me, then said I needed $740 worth of work (idler arm replacement and etc); took it to Wheelocks - $409 if you want it, but NOT EVEN NEEDED. Wheelocks Rocks. UPDATE: dealer told me $1250 for A/C Clutch & Coil for Honda CRV. Took it here - $750 entire unit replaced. Wheelocks Rocks.
